I would say that having SGA and drafting Giddy with the buyout is reasonable.

If Kemba Walker balls out next year, will NYK have any capability to extend him long term for say 2-3 more years?

yes they will have early bird right so they can give him 175% of his last salary to in his next contract. So if his 2nd year is like 9 mill we offer him $15.75mm which could translate to 4 years $74mm which at 33 isnt a bad extension.

It might not be enough. I wonder if we are better off dumping Knox to get that number higher. This is a rare case where a guy making less might be a problem. I still can't believe how fortunate we were to get him. This is a huge signing for this front office. To be able to get a buyout player of this caliber is very impressive.

exactly

The Thunder were essentially given draft picks to obtain Walker’s contract with an idea of flipping him in another trade. There was no market, so Oklahoma City bought him out earlier this week. The desperate Knicks, striking out on other targets, brought Walker home on a modest deal that could still be reworked but is believed to be for the rest of the Knicks’ cap space ($8 million) with possibly a second-year option.

wow

The guy he spoke to hasn't treated Kemba. He is just judging what they are calling the injury. Not to discount it because it is there but if Kemba was fully healthy there is no chance he is on the Knicks. The risk reward of this move is understood from the very beginning, which is why you have Rose too.

Do hope it works out with Kemba. However, maybe we need to see how things work out first before we start talking extensions. Especially with the condition of his left knee. Do not think it is a good idea to start making cuts either. This may be another case of fans basing their judgement on what a player WAS rather than what a player currently IS. Something common with Knick fans. Me included. He just came off a season where he was limited and which ended with him bowing out after just two games in the playoffs. Guy is a hell of a player when healthy. But let's keep in mind that the team who thought he was worth signing to a large contract, decided to throw in the towel. Like I said, hope it is the storybook ending everyone seems to feel it will be.

To be honest, not hating the move and looking forward to watching him play. Can't deny the practical side would have preferred Nunn, Mills or Graham. But they went on to good opportunities. However, do think the FO understands the risk that is Rose and Walker and has done a good job adding emergency alternatives.

He didn’t want to be in okc and was willing to pay to leave. Okc obliged. Pretty simple.

Don’t know why more players/teams don’t try and do this at the start of the offseason while teams have cap room so their new team can essentially cover more of the salary- usually they end up doing buyouts at the trade deadline when teams can’t offer more than the minimum

I think some teams are delusional and believe they can move those deal on to some sucker (the Knicks in the past). Also, if a player is looking at minimum contract, he's less likely to give back that much.

OKC knew what it was doing. It bought the 16th pick. To pay 55mil is not chump change.
Did they think they could flip him for nothing? I doubt it.
The knee is an issue. It tempers my enthusiasm a bit. OKC was perhaps thinking it would keep payroll down anyway so eating this for Giddy is interesting.
Presti is either a genius or an idiot.
My take is Kemba will rest a lot this year and I’ll repeat might not see him until after Christmas.

So Kemba gave up 20 mil to come to NY?.....I believe that's false, because he knew he would get that 20 mil back, which is why he signed for 8-9mil per year for 2 years. So technically, he only gave up around 3-4 mil.

Still no official contract #'s right? Press release doesn't even mention the years.

Feel like even the media people use this site to verify salaries of players just signed: https://www.spotrac.com/nba/new-york-knicks/yearly/cap/

What a criminal! Let’s boo him on opening night.

Now seriously, add to the 3-4 mil the fact that the last year is a team option too. So around 12-13 mil?

For those that doubt whether Kemba can still play... Here are highlight from the Celtics/Wizards play-in game on May 18. He apparently got hurt with the bone bruise after this.

29pts, 6/14 from 3, 7 rebounds. (this game was better known as the Tatum 50 point game, but Kemba was the 2nd highest scorer for either team)
