Why do you keep quoting me? Seems like you've had a hard-on for this since you've been wrong on 48378763756272 other things.

I already said I want to see how he coaches in the playoffs. He has won 50 games before. The Hawks were a 50+ win team and yet nobody remembers that because they bombed out of the playoffs. Let's see how he coaches in this playoffs before putting his name next to Holzman in the MSG rafters.

A. Because it is entertainment.

Hard on for you? Only in your imagination JamesK. Being wrong or right on a discussion board gets no Monopoly money, no bonus points and no extra credit. You only gets respect for backing your opinion with reasonably factorial stuff or making someone do a spit take.

JamesKPolk wrote:I already said I want to see how he coaches in the playoffs. He has won 50 games before. The Hawks were a 50+ win team and yet nobody remembers that because they bombed out of the playoffs.

JamesKPolk - "how he coaches in the playoffs" implies that Mike Woodson will suddenly morph into a seventh grade, substitute gym teacher in late April. It is so patently arbitrary as it conveniently overlooks the immaturity (Marvin Williams), petulance (Josh Smith) and downright stage fright (Joe Johnson) of the Hawk's top starters.

JamesKPolk wrote:Let's see how he coaches in this playoffs before putting his name next to Holzman in the MSG rafters.

Red Holzman and Mike Woodson have nothing in common, except one played for the other. Woodson has a long way to go before he gets a banner near the pinwheel roof. Everyone knows that. Woodson knows that. He admitted, "We've got a long way to go."

Your feeble attempt to imply that anyone is equating a Hall of Famer with an incompetent mercenary who will fold like a cheap suit in three weeks is too transparent for words. Except the previous words.

Is that 50 or 51 wins? I lost track.

And Anudder Thing

JamesKPolk - in case you missed it, 6'9 Chris Copeland is now an essential frontcourt man. Carmelo Anthony is playing cameo minutes at center.

Marcus Camby (left plantar fasciitis), Rasheed Wallace (fractured left foot), Kurt Thomas (right foot stress reaction) and Amar’e Stoudemire (right knee surgery) are out. Tyson Chandler sat last night with a reoccurrence of soreness from a bulging disc in his neck that recently kept him out of 10 games.

The playoffs grind down to half court basketball. Playoff games are laced with vicious collisions, rebounding in traffic and fouls with evil intent. Coach that in the playoffs

But there are no excuses from our leader:

“It’s something that is right there for us to take, and we’ve just got to figure out how to get it. We’re a little banged up right now with injuries, but again, guys that are in uniform, they’re playing. That’s all I can tell you.”

no excuses

In the last 40 years only four other guys got to 52 wins. Pitino, JVG, and Red did it once. Riley did it three times. If you can't appreciate something that happens only 6 times in 40 years I am not sure what will make you happy as a fan.

If the Knicks fail to reach the ECF you would be okay with Mike Woodson as head coach?

If the Knicks get eliminated in the first round you would be okay with Woodson as head coach?

Then you have no idea how to run a team.

That's funny. I seem to recall a number of fans on this board arguing that a SECOND round exit wasn't good enough for them. This was during the Melo trade drama. Now that we are winning, I wonder how many still feel that way? Or how fast they will flip flop if we bomb a series/get knocked out in the first. It's always, what have you don't for me lately with some people...

JamesKPolk - while you berate holfresh for not having the insight of an NBA General Manager, can you please post your resume?

"He puts his personal agenda and goals aside to see his players do well."

The lesson?

If a coach cannot effectively manage diverse individuals, he will never come close to forming (or running) a team.

In 2009, Woodson's Hawks beat the Heat in the 1st round advancing to the eastern conference semi's. They lost to the #1 seeded, 66 win Cavs lead by MVP Lebron James.

In 20010, Woodson's Hawks beat the Bucks in the 1st round and lost to a better Magic squad in the eastern conference semi's. So, how did Woodson bomb-out in the playoffs when he beat teas he was supposed to beat and lose to teams that were not only better but had homecourt advantage? This is not the NCAA tournament, the better teams win in the NBA playoffs, so again, I ask, how did he bomb out?

True that, I'm not qualified to be a GM, but we all get to play one on this board..But ask yourself this..Does Vogel lose his job if Indy gets bumped in the first round and doesn't make the ECF?? Does Thibs lose his job for the same??...George Karl??...Woody has his team performing as good if not better than those highly regarded coaches despite the injuries...So why is Woody held to a different standard??

Papabear Says

JameskPolk can't answer that. I think he is speaking from anger. He knows good and well Woody is doing a great job. Does that mean every coach must be fired if they loose in the first round. Hey what about the coaches who didn't make the playoffs?

I really don't understand how a Knick fan can assess the job Woody did in Atlanta not watching the games...But that said, Doc was suppose to be a bad coach in Orlando and turned the corner in Boston...I don't know if anyone could have handled this roster better than Woody has the last year and a half...He has done a great job thus far...We could end up winning 54/55 games when it's all said and done... With our best/ most important players missing 10+ games each...Woody is the man, we have bigger fish to fry in the offseason...

I would say no, since I enjoyed being a Knick fan much better when they were perennial losers. Never more so than when Isiah was running things.

The Elephant In The Room

holfresh wrote:Woody has his team performing as good if not better than those highly regarded coaches despite the injuries...So why is Woody held to a different standard?

It is the IronWillGiroud Standard. This standard states that a distant follower of basketball prefers an inferior Knicks record from a coach like Mike D'Antoni OVER a vastly superior Knicks record from Coach Mike Woodson.

The reason lies deep in the heart of the fan who would put a playoff record with another franchise on a pedestal, while belittling the best win totals in the last 40 seasons.

To anyone comparing records, and not superficial appearances or media hype, that is preference can only be described as insane.

Mike D'Anotin LOOKS like a better coach to people like IronWillGiroud ir JamesKPok for reasons that only they understand. They certainly have not built a compelling case in basketball terms, except in their own minds.

a thread based on an insane premise draws the insanity out of some. some prefer the sizzle to the steak. fits that bill
