Of course it was. Fields was caught up in sharing the ball and having fun at the same time. He got caught up in the idea that it is just a game and that people pay their money to be entertained. One play of yootful enthusiasm.

So sue him.

IT was a dumb play but it shows the players are getting loose and acting on impulse. MDA's teams thrive on creativity and athletic prowess. There is a time and place for it.

Ask Golden Nate!

I know everyone is all in awe over Lin, but, I just can't wait to see Shump NEXT season. If he works hard this upcoming summer, my God, much more finishing which will complete his beautiful moves to the rack. The emergence of Lin, a finishing Shumpert, a new found believer in passing in Melo, a willing defender in Amar'e, and the positivity of Chandler?! Man oh man.....

Two words:
Greg Anthony.

Another two words:
Jared Jeffries.

Another two words:
Charles Smith

Yes, there have been a lot of Knicks that miss layups like they're going out of style.

Shumpert just needs to f'in finish.

Shumpert...had the most success against (Kobe). Bryant shot 7-for-16 (18 points) against Fields, but was 3-for-11 (11 points) against Shumpert.

Shumpert...had the most success against (Kobe).

"It's just tough because you know he's going to get those veteran calls on me," Shump said. "It's hard to guard him. He's got so many moves you have to worry about. You've got to worry about him shot faking and getting that foul on you. He's not one of those guys that just gets the foul. He gets the foul and one, and still makes the shot. It's a tough cover, but you've got to do it. I like the challenge."

Shumpert scored 12, but nine came in the final period, helping keep the Knicks ahead of the Lakers by about 10 for most of the time.

"Usually when we get a rebound, I've got to usually come back and get the ball and bring it up," Shumpert said. "Now, if I get it or he gets it, it's just foot on the gas, and that's the way I like to play. Today, he got his hands on a steal and my eyes lit up. We took off and got a quick two points on the other end. That's what we bring when we're on the floor together. We're just going to be able to attack and get into that paint. He likes to use the ball screen; I'm a little more just off the dribble. I like playing with him."

Yeah, Shump needs to learn to finish. It was pretty clear he was finishing to far from the rim. That is easy to fix.

yup yup.

anyone who has a problem with shump didn't pay attention to shump having kobe on lockdown.

and Lin and Shump are both guards who can push the pace and handle the ball. they look real good together when they're on the floor. they have chemistry.

wave offs? we talkin' bout wave offs? we have the most exciting young backcourt in the league!

does it seem like Lin is still shaken up from that wave off? i think he might be over it, fellas. time to let it go.

(and i hate to say it, but if you think shump waving off lin that one time is bad... wait'll you get a load of melo. it's in melo's dna to wave guys off and there will be some bumps before he realizes that it's lin's team now.)

It was nice to see some chemistry developing between Lin and Shumpert in that Lakers game- hope to see that continuing. I like Shumpert, but I'm amazed at how much he seems to have quietened down since the start of the season- remember people were worried that we had a new Nate Robinson (attitude wise)?

i want to say that his legs have been a little banged up; only recently have I seen some pop from his run and jump. Condensed season doesn't help any NBA player, no less a rookie.

What concern me a little more is his finishing around the rim. Fixable, but still troubling.

Love his defense. Sometimes he overreacts, but that will change over time.

I think he's wrong footing his jumps. In the Summer when he was doing all those crazy dunks, he was more calm and getting his footwork right. He likes to jump off 2 feet, but in games it's harder to do cuz you slow down just a bit to do it. Gallo had a similar problem before they fixed his gate and got his timing down. Shump can fix this but it's gonna take time. It's kind of like bad footwork for a QB. You end up throwing off the wrong foot and it wrecks your accuracy and strength.

He should watch some Lin tapes to see how to draw fouls going to the rim. He's too powerful and athletic to not drive to the rim more often and absorb contact and finish. But watching him you can see when he is a finished product he will do damage. His jumper is getting better also as the season goes on. Probably from more relaxed controlled shots.

He also picks up his dribble or pulls up too many times when he has a lane to basket.

I think shumpert is gonna be a good player especially next year when he has more time to practice and develop. If he limits the turnovers and improves his jump shot he is gonna be good with lin. Also hi defense will continue to get better

How Good Is A Good Player?

"I don’t really have a preference," (Shump) said. "I just play to win. I don’t really care what I play, how much I play. I just want to win. We lost a lot of games. The biggest stat is winning to me."

Entering Saturday’s game, Shumpert has averaged 12.3 points and 4 assists per game since Lin moved into the starting lineup. On the season, he was averaging 10.3 points and 3.5 assists per game. After having less than two turnovers just once in his first 20 games, Shumpert has done that twice in the last three games.

Last night, Shump hit some clutch shots. Again. He was 9-16 for 20 points and his standard star power defense.

Shump is saying the right things - and I think his game has grown over the past 5 watching Lin do his thing. Shumpert is moving the ball when he needs to... and he's starting to do some of the same things with the ball - not giving up his dribble too soon and pressuring the defense by penetrating.

I don't believe those who say Shumpert's natural position is a 2. He's an athlete with a lot of skills, but perhaps might actually be lacking some things as both a SG and a PG. The 2G spot is probably going to be a little bit easier to learn for him at the NBA level... but he's still got a ways to go before he fully utilizes his athleticism and power game. (Billups on the team would have been great for his development... but for now, Lin will have to do as his mentor.)

nixluva and company: love your analysis re: Shump's footing. As a guy who never really played ball I love to read stuff like this, so I can look for it myself. There were a few sequences in the 2nd half the Laker game where Shump was the 1 and Lin was off ball and Fields at the 3, and that got us some great looks and points. To have versatility in our guard corps is a beautiful thing.

“Without Iman,” coach Mike D’Antoni said, “Jeremy never has the chance to win the game because we never put him in a position to do it. That steal did it for us. That steal allowed us to win this game.”

Shumpert's steal and dunk was a combination of Clyde and Westbrook (thank you Nalod). It was THE game changer as the improbable 13-1 run was nearing its crescendo. As Shump shouted to the stunned arena the Knicks got the message.

From opening day, Shump has been an emotional leader. His competitive fire burns bright. Add the versatility of Fields, and suddenly our guard rotation does not suck that bad.

“He’s about as good an on-ball defender as there is in the league right now,” said Jeffries, “...and he’s only getting better. That’s the remarkable thing.”

"Yo Baron, you think you can give us 12 good minuters after the all star break?"
