I love how Nate is called a showboat but somehow Gallinari's fist pumping after getting a rebound or a 3 point shot is just him expressing how happy he is to play and be part of the team. Please stop both.

look, i have no problem w/being happy about making a play that helps ur team get back into a game... when Nate gets pumped up & the crowd gets pumped up during a big run the team is making to get back into a game, i view it as a positive... what i don't like about Nate's game is how he'll celebrate a dunk when his team is down 20 like he just accomplished something... that raises questions to me that he may be more about showboating & self promotion & less about thinking about winning a basketball game sometimes... that worries me.

TMS - if you don't like wasting time then why waste time with a response?

You are free to waste time in reading/ or not waste time by easily scrolling past reading whatever I post. The fact that you find it necessary to respond about wasting time is curious. Bottom line, posting on threads is a waste of time because stating an opinion does not change a thing - but we do it - so what's the big deal?

I have clearly stated my opinion on Mr Robinson.

Counter to what you label as Nate's so-called "love of showboating" I see his potential for additional personal growth. The fact that I chose to back this opinion with quotes from people who have a closer relationship with either you or I is merely presented as evidence contrary to the long-distance viewpoint.

earl, u offer nothing on these forums other than cute diatribes about how every player on this roster should be lauded & celebrated for their valuable contributions to this franchise... take a look at the W-L records over the past few years & get a grip with reality.

TMS - if I had any grip on reality I would be writing a cute diatribe about President Barack Obama's Economic Stimulus Package.

As it stands, Knicks basketball is one of many non-reality pursuits I allow myself to think creatively and optimistically. So sue me.

My clearly stated opinion that The Mayor, Gallinari, Duhon, Nate and Lee compose my fave five for the future has absolutely nothing to do with how Donnie Walsh disposes of Marbury, Curry, Thomas, Roberson, Rose, Harrington, James or Jeffries

Your blanket negative characterization of my total editorial output is only emblematic of your obvious resentment, conspicuous consumption of Lemon-Lime Haterade and deficiency in reading comprehension skills

To be fair to Nate the last time he did that was that dunk when the Cavs were blowing us out big time few years back, lately Nate's cut down on it. I'm still worried about his decision making at certain streches of games, he still has Al-ish tendencies of going 1 on 3 or taking bad shots when he's pumped up.

No offense earl but there you go again , i mean i'm not gonna acuse you of losing your grip with reality but its kinda hard to have a decent discussion with you on many things cos you just say the wackiest of things as a response to most of us.

PS And no i'm not hating you cos i actually hate the fact that you call Chandler the Mayor

from what i've seen this year i don't really get the notion that he's matured all that much at all... he's definitely improved his game but i still get the sense that he's more concerned about his individual stats & "getting his" than on the team winning games sometimes... we've seen his selfish play take us out of more than a few games this season during stretches where the team was starting to play well... i really am suspect on whether Nate will ever realize that sometimes it helps the team by letting other guys carry the load.

I dont think he'll ever mature to someone we'll fully trust but if he agrees to sign a manegable contract something like the 5 mil a year i 'm all for keeping him as a spark plug of the bench. I think its premature yet that he'll command more than that from the open market...thats my opinion.

i think there are guys in this draft class that can eventually replace him as our backup PG, maybe not right away obviously but given a couple years to grow i think guys like Collison, Teague or Stephen Curry can become quality backups at the PG position for us... they may not be the freakishly athletic players that Nate is or even the dynamic scorer that he is, but i feel we'd be better served by trading him at the deadline rather than locking him up longterm & hampering our chances of landing a bigname FA in 2010 because of it... the only way i'd wanna lock up Nate longterm is if we can somehow dump Curry or Jefferies' contracts, & i don't think either 1 of them are moveable at this point... sometimes u gotta make hard decisions w/a bigger longterm goal in mind... in my view, trading Lee & Nate are 2 tough decisions to make but necessary ones nonetheless... just my opinion as well.

NineMike2 - what do you mean by "most of us"? Are you representing some legislative sub-committee or group? I would be happy to have a decent conversation with you. Have you and I ever gone one-on-one over Knicks basketball?

one more thing, didn't you receive the memo? wacky is good, just like air hockey, midgets who wrestle, Cheetos and Jerome James on New Years Day. Wacky should never be confused with wack. Pizza with pineapple topping or french fries with mayonnaise is wack

Nate Robinson is good.

The difference between showboating and playing with emotion is a thin line. You guys remember when Duke used to slam the floor with their hands when they were making a comeback or taking a game over. It got the crowd pumped up and as much as I hate to say it, it was very emotional to see and feel. The media loved it and so did I although I hate Duke. Now just imagine if during a run, Nate decided to do that? What would you who think he show boats say? What if David Lee was playing a hell of a game and we were in a tight one and he got a huge rebound shot down the floor and made a huge layup for the lead. Then he did the floor slap while the crowd was going crazy? Would you say that was an emotional outburst or showboating?

Now Nate is a competitor with a little street ball in him but that can be coached out. I know some of you guys like the stoic, man about business approach that some athletes posses but Nate is not like that. Not by nature and by his experience. As far as his decision making, yeah he made some bone head plays but so has Harrington (out of control), Jeffries (bringing the ball up), Q Rich (hoisting up crazy threes), David looking for the double-double (stat padder) in points and rebounds but can't be found on defense and CHRIS DUHON!! How many times have we seen Duhon let his man just waltz on by to a easy layup? It is ridiculous and I'm am shocked that people aren't more upset about that than if Nate will stop playing emotionally. Now for the big question? Will Nate mature? Most men do. Will Duhon start to play D during playoff basketball? Figure the odds and if you are one of the few who think that we can get more out of Chris or a two guard that brings more than Nate with a trade, then you must be smokin something illegal. Even if Nate made every correct decision from now on, it would not fix the above problems people!!

We have bigger problems with this team than if Nate is gonna mature or not..

Emotion and Showboating

Martice - not only are you a gifted writer but you have a firm grasp on the multiple contradictions that slip through the cracks. The Duke "slap the floor" analogy was absolutely brilliant.

Unfortunately, Nate being the stick of dynamite that he is has its caveats, such as the Denver scuffle. He will never be forgiven for that bit of rabble-rousing. Then again, if I'm playing next to a guy who does NOT have my back then he may not be the type of guy I want to go into battle with. It may have been ugly, but the next time you watch a tense baseball game and a batter rushes the mound over a fastball aimed at his head - watch the bullpens empty and see if there is a relief pitcher who dares to stay behind, comfortably seated and reading the scouting charts.

At the same time, the stoic, "man about business" approach of Wilson Chandler is derided as being an indication that he is "too passive" or "lacks the competitive (cough) fire" to impose his will (pun intended) on the opponent.

You are also correct that Nate is the least of the Knicks worries.

We need the 1999 Marcus Camby, the 1983 Bernard King, the 1973 Jerry Lucas, the 1969 Dick Barnett and the 1998 Anthony Mason, just to keep it real.

Of those five, only Jerry Lucas never showed any emotion.

We have bigger problems with this team than if Nate is gonna mature or not..

if u read my last couple posts on this topic u'd have seen where i said i didn't mind Nate getting emotional when the team was making a comeback & it was w/in the heat of competition... since u seem like a level headed poster i just wanna make that point clear... earl i know has a penchant for word twisting & agenda driven posting so i won't even waste my time on him... that's not what i'm referring to when i talk about showboating... the problem is he's the same way when he makes a meaningless flashy play during a blowout loss also... that makes me question whether that it's more about trying to pump up his teammates to spur them on to victory, or if it's just his penchant for showboating that's the reason for it... i tend to think it's the latter... he's very focused on self promotion & drawing attention to himself... u see it all the time... he's dancing on the sidelines, in the lockerroom, poppin' his collar puttin his face into the camera... this is not the same type of pride to be a Knick, punching his chest during a big moment in the game that John Starks would portray for example... when i see Nate acting like a goof all the time it makes me wonder if he'll ever grow up & mature enough to be reliable in a clutch situation to make the smart play on a regular basis... i know it's a thin line between going over the edge, & based on Nate's behavior i tend to think he's on the bad end of that line.

I think Nate is maturing. I like how after he won the dunk contest, he was very respectful of Howard and acknowledged his teammates who helped. He respresented the franshise well. He is just a high-strung guy and he will probably always be a little too energitic for his own good, but I think he is a far more mature player than he was two years ago and I think he will continue to improve. The dude has a ton of talent, especially for someone only 5'7". People love to watch him play and he is not someone who is going to get scared in the 4th quarter of a game. As long as he continues to work on controlling his emotions, I would rather have him on the team, if we can sign him at a fair price.

his rookie season Nate was very respectful in an interview w/MSG when posed a question about how he's going to feel playing against Allen Iverson... he said he respected AI a lot & is going to try to learn from him... so far i don't see the same kinda heart & determination in Nate's game that's in AI's... all i see is a guy who wants desperately to be noticed w/a severe case of Napolean complex chip on his shoulder who gets way too caught up in celebrations & drawing attention to himself... i don't mind how he represented during the dunk contest... that's an individual achievement... it's when he does that stuff during games that gets me worried... u should be thinking about the team first, & not self promotion... he's got way too much of that football endzone celebration mentality built into his blood it seems... dunno if he'll ever lose it... but i respect ur choice if u wanna hold onto him... i disagree... i think he's replaceable w/a younger player in this year's draft that will make a lot less money for the next 3 or 4 years.

Well, if it is a choice between Stephen Curry and Nate, then I agree, we should go with Curry. Some mock drafts have Curry failing because they think he is another Trajon Langdon, but IMO Curry is the real deal. The dude is a far better scorer than his dad and his dad managed to play for like 13 years. Curry is not a true PG, but as long as he can learn the pick and roll, he will do fine in this offense because of his ability to shoot from anywhere. Curry should be available with our pick unless he goes berserk in the tournament and scores 40 pts a game.

Curry was 1 of my choices... Teague & Collison are others... i don't think those guys are necessarily gonna be as dynamic a scorer as Nate but they'll be quality backups at the PG position for us at the very least... i think we could nab guys like that late in the 1st round w/an extra pick & still use our own lottery pick on someone to shore up the frontcourt.

if u read my last couple posts on this topic u'd have seen where i said i didn't mind Nate getting emotional when the team was making a comeback & it was w/in the heat of competition... since u seem like a level headed poster i just wanna make that point clear... earl i know has a penchant for word twisting & agenda driven posting so i won't even waste my time on him... that's not what i'm referring to when i talk about showboating... the problem is he's the same way when he makes a meaningless flashy play during a blowout loss also... that makes me question whether that it's more about trying to pump up his teammates to spur them on to victory, or if it's just his penchant for showboating that's the reason for it... i tend to think it's the latter... he's very focused on self promotion & drawing attention to himself... u see it all the time... he's dancing on the sidelines, in the lockerroom, poppin' his collar puttin his face into the camera... this is not the same type of pride to be a Knick, punching his chest during a big moment in the game that John Starks would portray for example... when i see Nate acting like a goof all the time it makes me wonder if he'll ever grow up & mature enough to be reliable in a clutch situation to make the smart play on a regular basis... i know it's a thin line between going over the edge, & based on Nate's behavior i tend to think he's on the bad end of that line.

tks for responding TMS. I know what you mean about him being a camera hog. Guess what? Some guys are just camera hogs. Does that mean that he gives any less effort on the court? In order to showboat you gotta make plays right? Now I agree if the showboating is hurting our chances of winning, then Coach D should bench his ass!!!

However, he could showboat for entertainment purposes as long as its within the moment, gets his team and the crowd up, isn't disrespectful to the other team and doesn't cost us a victory because there are a lot guys on our team who don't showboat. In fact, they don't even showup!

Tks for your response Earl.

i never question Nate's effort on the court... it's his head that i question.
