As much as I'm disturbed about the inefficiency of the government response, I'm also disturbed about what went on during the aftermath:

"There is rapes going on here. Women cannot go to the bathroom without men. They are raping them and slitting their throats."

That's the most sickening part of this for me.

That was Briggs's point when he started this thread. Only the military can adequately handle the ramifications of a disaster of this magnitude. They needed to be ordered in last Sunday or Monday at the latest.

Anywhere that there is chaos of this magnitude you have what is called opportunist criminals. People who were criminals to begin with having a feild day. Summer of Sam for instance.....suburbs, midtown, downtown etc. When people are not policed the right way the small percentage of criminals loom larger. My grandmother and aunt went from Baptist hospital (where they stayed for 3 days) and then went to the Convention Center for 3 days. The only criminal activity they encountered was the negligence by the gov. That's about it. No rapes. Nothing like that. Just the injustice of leaving them there to suffer.

It was 1977. I was there. It didn't compare.

Yep, sure was 77. Sorry about that. But I was mainly refering to the crimes reported during that time.

IMO the Katrina disaster was worse than the NYC blackout of '77.

Why? I was there. Where was I? In the house.

Did hundreds of thousands of people get forced out of their homes and locations of basic resources like what just happened? NO.

Compared to the sheer number of people than needed help, evac and basic survival resources, those crimes some can't seem to see past are not what make up the MAJOR problem.

The lackadaisical and tardy manner in which the evac/rescue/HELP was doled out and doing things like stopping people from leaving the city and locking people up in the Superdome, THAT's the main, real problem.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

I lived down Minna St in Brooklyn. We were playing stickball in the driveway until 6AM with flashlights. Everyone was out on their steps. It was pretty cool from what I recall. I remember back then playing tee-ball the very next morning after the Son of Sam guy killed two teenagers right next to the field we were on.

Wal-Mart gives a whopping 1mm$ to Katrina, wow can they spare it? they only have revenues in the 300 BILLION $ range

if there are other people giving money, the smart way to give money is by going down to your bank and going through them. Take your time, find the right place for your money--the money will be needed for a long time, so you don't need to rush into anything. with any charitable contribution, do as much homework as you can BEFORE you send the money. My family plus my mother in law plan to make a contribution this week and we've decided to put the money towards helping un-insured homeowners. In this case the money will sit in it's own account until a verifiable avenue for it is found. I think the government and the UN can flip the bill for everything NOW--but, we realized that there will be thousands of people shafted who did not, or could not afford insurance. These people may need the most financial help.

For instance, we sent in a 2,500$ contribution for 9-11 to both the city's fire and police depts in the name of all fallen workers. We got back receipts , receipts of thanks, and how the money was allocated after the fact.

I would rather criticize the companies that havent donated anything than companies that have donated, even though it seems little.

How can you call out Wal-Mart, they've made a donation, no donation is too small. In no way are they required to give any money at all. Just becuase your out donating money doesn't mean that Wal-Mart has to donate 10000000000 dollars just becuase they have it. 15 million bucks is alot of money. ALOT of money.

Just because you think/feel a certain way doesnt mean the rest of the world is right there with you.

Lets put it this way, as it was first reported, Wal-Mart AND microsfot gave 1 or 2mm each.

Wal-Mart for instance has revenues of 300B or 300thousand million $ per YEAR with profits that range between 10-20b PER year--they spend more than a million $ on store carriages. 20 mm OK, 1-2 mm from a MAJOR league United States of America business, not enough. Private citizens give in the 100,000 to 1mm $ range--the big companies need to give 20-30-50mm$-- To put it into perspective, wall mart is worth more than all 4 big sports COMBINED 10 times over. the NY Yankees alone gave 1 mm$

Yes Briggs, they are very wealthy but they do not have an obligation to meet your expectations when donating. They dont need anyone to tell them how much is a satisfactory amount to donate. Thats one point. Another point, why get on the companies that donated already and say that they should donate more, instead of saying something about companies that have donated $0?

Very, very interesting article. Must read in fact. Basically scientists had predicted this a year ago and warned. But corporations call the shots.

Allan Houston should donate the remaining $40mm on his contract. At least he will have done something to earn it

NEW YORK Accompanying her husband, former President George H.W.Bush, on a tour of hurricane relief centers in Houston, Barbara Bush said today, referring to the poor who had lost everything back home and evacuated, "This is working very well for them."

[...]

In a segment at the top of the show on the surge of evacuees to the Texas city, Barbara Bush said: "Almost everyone I’ve talked to wants to move to Houston."

Then she added: "What I’m hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed with the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (she chuckled)--this is working very well for them."
