We all knew it was coming sooner or later. Hopefully they catch this variant before it spreads and becomes our new normal like the Delta. This one seems to spreads faster, evade immunization better and cause extremely high viral loads. The fact that two people who was never in direct contact in 2 separate rooms can transfer it between themselves with both having very high viral loads is concerning. This one also seems to have different spike proteins due to many mutations than the other variants. Seeing as the spike proteins are the basis of the vaccines attack that could be why the second fully vaxxed person still caught it so easily while in quarantine. This new variant is coming right when dumb people are trying to go about life like COVID is no longer a thing. For example, the OKC Thunder are lifting their vaxx and testing policies soon.

It’s almost like we’ve been warned for over a year that we need an equitable distribution of vaccines otherwise we’re all at risk from variants, but a few western countries continued to block patent waivers or do anything to meaningfully boost production and supply in poorer countries, and so here we are.

Country goes into fourth lockdown amid soaring cases and announces jab mandate from February 2022

Austria is to become the first European country to make vaccinations against Covid 19 mandatory, and will go into its fourth nationwide lockdown for at least 10 days from Monday, the chancellor, Alexander Schallenberg, has announced.

The government said it was preparing the legal groundwork for a general vaccine mandate to come into effect from 1 February, with exemptions for those unable to receive a jab on medical grounds.

The age from which people will be required to be vaccinated has not yet been determined, the government said.

Those refusing to be vaccinated are likely to face administrative fines, which can be converted into a prison sentence if the fine cannot be recovered.

“For a long time the consensus in this country was that we don’t want a vaccine mandate,” Schallenberg said after a meeting with the Alpine republic’s heads of state. “In spite of months of persuasion, we have not managed to convince enough people to be vaccinated”.

Tightening vaccine pass controls and testing requirements had started to make a difference but it “hasn’t convinced enough”, said Schallenberg, who took over as chancellor last month from his party ally Sebastian Kurz. “We don’t want a fifth wave, we don’t want a sixth or a seventh wave.”

Austria is weathering its most powerful wave of Covid, with authorities on Friday reporting 990 cases per 100,000 people over seven days. It recorded another 15,809 new infections on Friday.

The country has the lowest vaccination rate in western Europe, with 66% of its population fully vaccinated. Over the past two weeks, the conservative green coalition government has tried to prevent a collapse of the health system by making it mandatory for citizens to show proof of vaccination or recovery at restaurants and bars, and then announcing a “lockdown for the unvaccinated”.

I would add mandatory quarantine times for all travelers coming from other places to the US. The mandatory quarantine is how this new variant was caught before it spread uncontrollably in the regions that still have this policy. Sadly not everywhere does this so it has made it other places already. It is also how places like New Zealand has kept COVID numbers so small. I think places like this go a bit too far but I understand the better safe than sorry method. They don't need to do a 2 to 3 week quarantine every time a few cases pop up. Just tell your residents to mask up and distance again. Unlike in the US, people in New Zealand actually follow the rules so that should be enough. If people don't follow the rules then you resort to the hard lockdown and they have no one to blame but themselves.

Vaccination provides good protection against death and limits hospitalizations. So every one who want to save other people lives and their own have to get boosters and all.
People who don't want it for whatever reason will eventually get covid and can die. Good riddance. Natural selection.

It's so demoralizing- just when we seem to get things under control, a new variant emerges. Here's hoping this Omicron has milder symptoms/impact if it turns out to be more contagious and vaccine evading (otherwise it's another big step back).

Like with most things in life the idiots mess it up for everyone.
