To me it opens up the idea that Kemba can come to terms with reduced minutes, a different sort of role and preserve his career for longer- similar conceptually to what Rose has bought into, but maybe on a lesser scale. By all accounts he has always brought a very positive attitude to the court and is beloved by teammates. I think this is a good space for IQ to learn from a couple of great scorers while developing his game. Might make sense for the Knicks to give Rose/Kemba some off days on back to back games (maybe rotate the one who plays). Aside from IQ, hopefully Vildoza and McBride emerge as playable depth.

And I think this will cascade to Rose too, neither PG has any pressure to overdue it

Hey Martin my dude thanks for giving me another opportunity. My draft night disappointment was due to missing out on some of my favorite PGs specifically Lonzo Ball.

However this 4x All-Star Kemba Walker addition has me just as EXCITED as I was DISAPPOINTED on FA day #1!

Kemba Walker? A New York Knicks starting PG???!? Are you kidding me?!? Talk about Left Field!!

This is a perfect illustration of NYC hoops fans...quick to condemn, followed by ecstatic at the emerging developments. We're an impatient bunch. Good thing is, Leon don't pay attention to our BS.

Let's GO Knicks!!!!!!!

Wait until we hit a three game losing streak next season...

Oh crap you’re right. Blow it up!

I expect we'll be watching some fun hoops next season, assuming our defensive grit stays intact. Gonna be a bunch of winning. Last season was the first that I watched nearly every game in a loooong time. We will likely build on that and take it up a notch or two.

Kemba back in NYC is really, really huge for us. We're deep, solid shooting/scoring/playmaking, excellent D (hopefully out to the perimeter).

That said, who'da thunk the Yankees would be so bad this season. So yeah, it could easily flip again.

In 2012-2013 we finished as the #2 seed of the Eastern Conference.

This 2021-2022 team is not only 10x better on DEFENSE but we're also much deeper in both talent and overall depth.

2021-2022 Knicks will challenge both Milwaukee and Brooklyn for the top 3 Seeds.

And after adding Kemba Walker (a Trae Young killer), Evan Fournier and a healthy Mitchell Robinson? We're going to sweep them again during the regular season and if we're to meet in the playoffs but at full strength this time? Knicks in 4-5.

I think we’re good. We aren’t that good. That 2013 team had an insanely hot start thanks to Kidd’s leadership and Carmelo playing off the charts. We are probably around a 45 win team

I always knew KEMBA WALKER loved to play @ Madison Square Garden. But. I never knew he ranked top 10 All-Time for average Points Per Game from a visiting road player @ MSG. That's bananas.

This is a good team. The one thing we don’t have is the athletic 6-7/6-9 sf — we don’t have that. But we have a bunch of everything else.

VDesai wrote:ESPN article said Kemba had stem cell treatment on his knee just before the season started in September, so the quick turnaround to the next season didn't give him enough time to rehab/get ready. So he missed the first 10 games and was rehabbing on the fly so his shooting numbers were down first half. He rebounded to have a very good 2nd half with a good eFG around 58%, but got hurt the last week or two of the season. Hopefully with a bit more time off this offseason he can get some of that behind him. That and it will make sense to keep his mins down to keep him fresh.

From what I remember, Bill Simmons and his fellow Celtics homers were talking about Kemba’s time in Boston and what went wrong a few weeks ago on one of the ringer podcasts. They said they’d heard one of the issues was when the lockdown happened, teams medical and rehab staff couldn’t meet up and rehab him, so they gave him a care plan and exercises to do for his knee, but when the season resumed, found out he hadn’t done them, and weren’t happy when he couldn’t really play in the bubble as a result, which annoyed the teams management.

Kemba soured on the team due to Ainges usual stuff of looking to trade him (felt betrayed/lied to etc) which soured him on the celtics.

Think he said his knee is probably chronic/degenerative, but sometimes he’d look like the old Kemba and other times a shadow of his former self. Said that the Hornets knew this which was probably why they let him walk, and was annoyed that the celtics either didn’t know or didn’t care until after he signed the contact.

However, I’m really happy with this signing- we avoid having to take a risk on chemistry by signing Schroeder, and the only alternative beyond that would like have been trading for DJ Augustine and his $7mil 2 year contract. Even if it is chronic/degenerative, we should be able to get a season or 2 out of him, which is all we need. We don’t need to play him full time or every game, and even if he struggles with health, he’s such a great chemistry guy and mentor he should help our young guards develop. Also takes some of the pressure off Randle.

Why am I not surprised that the Celtics (Danny Ainge) is leaking information to their number 1 homer of a fan to discredit a former player? The idea that Walker wasn't doing everything he could to get his knee straight is laughable. Perhaps he was nervous about taking multi million dollar advice from a doctor over the phone?

Fact is Ainge had to go because he was trying to trade Kemba around the league without disclosing the nature of his injury. He lost whatever remaining shreds of confidence he had after that and the only way forward for the franchise was his firing. Celtics were up Schlitz creek and so had to give the powerboat keys to Brad Stevens. Surprise! Coach turned rookie GMs only plan was to run it back with players he likes even if it meant giving up a pick.

Ainge's reputation has been built on the Brooklyn trade where he allegedly 'fleeced' the Nets. New city, new arena, made the playoffs added about 1 billion in franchise value, trust me, no one in the front office rued that trade.

Hope Simmons and Co. enjoy the sour grapes!

Question.

If Kemba Walker balls out next year, will NYK have any capability to extend him long term for say 2-3 more years?

yes they will have early bird right so they can give him 175% of his last salary to in his next contract. So if his 2nd year is like 9 mill we offer him $15.75mm which could translate to 4 years $74mm which at 33 isnt a bad extension.

I wouldn’t extend him past his current contract even if he goes nuts

I would...particular if him and Rose form a good starter/back up tandem and then slowly integrate McBride. I would not go nuts on $$$ but if he balls out and Lowry and CP3 hold up and do well you may have a team throw him a bag...

Let Kemba earn his next payday with another team while he’s here. He has 1-2 years left playing at a high level

exactly

The Thunder were essentially given draft picks to obtain Walker’s contract with an idea of flipping him in another trade. There was no market, so Oklahoma City bought him out earlier this week. The desperate Knicks, striking out on other targets, brought Walker home on a modest deal that could still be reworked but is believed to be for the rest of the Knicks’ cap space ($8 million) with possibly a second-year option.

Let’s see how his knee holds up. And I agree, I don’t know how we can keep him beyond 2 years- same for Rose. They are manager specials at the grocery store, got to cook/eat them today or they’ll be bad by tomorrow!

Yeah, looks like we signed a D Rose clone to give us another 20 minutes of the same on the court. Would make sense to manage minutes for both of them, give them frequent off nights, give minutes to IQ as our PG of the future, spread minutes around to save players the wear and tear. Problem is: this is not how Thibs coaches.

Why don't i hear anyone talking about how his former team is paying him many millions of dollars not to play and go away? Normally that is a pretty bad sign.

This is the best time for Kimba to come to the knicks. He's not under any max salary pressure. But rather an upgrade over Payton and a mentor for McBride....who I think will battle IQ for that future starting PG spot. In reality, IQ might be a career 6th man.. which isn't a bad thing. We shouldn't try and force him into being an everyday starting PG. Mcbride is more PG ready than IQ. He just lacks NBA experience. Next season will be very important for IQ and RJs growth.

As tricky as Kemba’s knee injury situation is anything is better than another year of Elf
