Here is something to feel great about.
Once upon a time, there was a star 7' center who played basketball without passion. He was not very well liked. Even his teammates considered him aloof. He could dominate a game by himself and played by himself. The fans respected him but did not love him. Suddenly, a young lead guard arrived from Michigan State. The young point guard won at the high school and college levels with a smile on his face. He played the game with joy and no fear of mistakes. The moment the young guard arrived, something changed in the veteran big man. He learned the game could be fun. They learned how to win together.
Fast forward to New York in February 2012.
Here is the cool part few people talk about. Carmelo ALREADY plays the game with joy. His frustration led him to trying to do too much. His multiple injuries prevented him from performing at peak efficiency. Melo never made excuses. In the same manner Magic inspired Kareem to enjoy the game, Jeremy Lin will push Carmelo towards what he wants more than anything - to be a winner. In turn, Carmelo will inspire Lin, who also plays with joy... and fierce desire.
The mutual bow between Melo and Lin predates the Landry/Lin nerd salute. It was not an empty gesture. It was a sign of mutual respect between two guys who like to have fun.
Think Carmelo will be double teamed with Lin driving to the rack?
Think Lin will be double teamed with Carmelo running to an open spot?
It will be fun to watch.
You heard it here first.
