Chandler is going to make a real nice role player one day.

Loved the way he played tonight he attacked the rim and he got offensive rebounds. He should get 2 a game with his eyes closed

I hope it is as correct as Islanders will win Stanley Cup soon...

when someone shoots 48 from the 2 and 29 from the three go to the hole. I would rather have DJ mom playing the three than Quentin. We need to find some pure shooters and a defender.

I thought so too but i think his play has convinced me his upside is at best an all star, at worst a solid starter and 3rd option on a good team. None too shabby.

Chandler already is a really nice role player... and imho a legit starter on most teams. Nice job of scouting by Isiah Thomas. :)

"Wilson Chandler can shoot it, can handle it, can pass it," said Chris Duhon. "He rebounds, knows the game, should get better and better."

"Wil's been ice the last few games," said coach Mike D'Antoni...

"I don't think he realized he was finishing on Garnett and (Kendrick) Perkins," laughed David Lee...

"Always one of the last guys to leave the gym," said Al Harrington. "Anybody who works that hard with that kind of talent is scary. Time will tell how good he is going to be."

"I just keep going, trying to be aggressive," Chandler said. "I've been struggling shooting jumpers, am trying to get some rim."

That's just Isles trying to troll IMO or not knowing much about NBA rosters. It looks foolish because he is scoring 14.8 ppg with 5.8 rpg. Role players get you 5 ppg and 5 rpg if you are lucky enough.

14.8 ppg with 5.8 rpg can still be role player numbers. depends on how much time a guy's getting, what else he provides on the floor, what kind of team he's on, etc.

Those are role player numbers. Go find a player who averages those numbers at age 21 and define them as a role player. I'm waiting.

Semantics 301

Kareem Abdul Jabbar was a role player

His role was to take the sky hook, defend the paint and wear the goggles.

Bill Bradley was a role player

His role was to hit the mid-range jump shot, get Cazzie's back and remind guys about the true meaning of teamwork

His role-playing number 24 was retired

right now nate rob and randy foye are averaging more than that and i'd call them role players. though older, mehmut okur, marquis daniels and nene are averaging more than that and i'd call them role players.

Right now, Wilson is a role player. Only the future will tell if he will be more than that. All I know is he is 21 and averaging nearly 15 and 6. Contrary to our "everybody else has good young players except us" attitude, not many 21 year olds do that. Will he improve? It remains to be seen. Working hard isn't the only thing he needs to do. He also needs to be more aggressive attacking the rim and stop relying on his jumpshot. He did that tonight and got good results. He needs to do that on a regular basis. But he's shown enough improvement this year to give you evidence that he is going to get better with time. You can't compare him to Lebron and you can't compare him to 10 year vets. But if you compare him to the average 21 year old coming into the league, he's pretty darn good.

Robinson is not a role player, neither is Foye. I think that is the misconception right there. Both are considered sixth man off the bench. A role player is a player who is asked to do a specific thing without doing everything. I will give you both past and current examples of role players. For example, Phil Jackson and Kurt Rambis were role players who were asked to come and defend. You expect them to come and defend. That was their specialities. Hell you would be happy if they could sink baskets, it would be considered icing but they were suppose to put a body on somebody. Another example of a role player is a guy who can give you offense could be with slashing or outside shooting. For example, Caroll and Kapono are role players who is asked to do one good thing, shoot 3 pointers. Once a coach ask a player to do more than one role they by definition cannot be considered a role player anymore and once they give them significant minutes that only boosts those facts. Just cause a fan in his or her own mind may think of a certain player as a role player doesn't mean that is in case actual facts.
So let's sum this up:
1. Significant minutes
2. More than one role asked of a player
equal not a role player.

Bip, see my above post where I debunk that role player thing. Man, Earl is right. This is unbelievable, Kobe is a role player too. His role is to make sure they win games. Thank God, player agents are smarter than that. I hope that won't be the line with David Lee come contract time because Walsh or whoever will have trouble saying that with a straight face.

ok so that helps narrow down why we were coming up with different takes on chandler's numbers. i'm not defining a role player as a specialist like you are.

There are several definitions of role players. I think most people on this thread are using it differently then Earl and Pharzeone are. Get on the same page you two.
