I'm just going to write a few high IQ players that come to my mind: Isiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Jeff Hornacek, Chris Mullin, Charles Barkley, KJ, Michael Jordan, Jason Kidd, Doc Rivers, Avery Johnson, Darrell Armstrong, Charles Oakley, Tim Duncan, Marcus Williams, Doron Sheffer, Nadav Henefeld, Ray Allen, Ricky Moore.

Only one I would disagree with is Oakley.

He's borderline. He did a lot of dumb things on the court. But he also had a great grasp of team defense, understanding where he fit in the offense(outside of his occasional attempt to drive from the foul line), positioning, starting the break. In my opinion he was a high IQ player that had a brain fart from time to time. He obviously analyzed his game and had a strong understanding of hwat he could and couldn't do and got the most of his ability instead of giving himself a nickname like Charliefranchise based on nothing. I won't get mad at you for not agreeing with me and accuse you of misusing the term because it is just an opinion. Although anyone that doesn't agree with me is an idiot. But that's besides the point.

On a side note: Anyone notice that I've been using the smiley faces more often to indicate my sarcasm or jokes. Now only 2 or 3 guys get all bent out of shape about somehting I say instead of half the board. My "posting IQ" is definitely improving.

Bip, if you were a guy, I would punch you in the face.

Hmmm, no smiley face. That must mean that you do think I'm a girl and you do want to punch people in the face.

Allanfan: Studies have shown that those people that threaten to punch people in the face tend to be violent towards their children. Then the children grow up to be serial killers. You should be more responsible and not threaten violence on these sites. I was once punched in the face as a child and your obvious attempt to intimidate me has brought up bad memories. Don't make me go on line and find a link that proves my studies. Your kids are doomed

Hmm...."posting IQ" directly related to "smiley IQ". Nice.

oh this is good:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/09/sports/basketball/09knicks.html?ref=basketball

From the article:

A coaching change and one free-agent signing will not transform the locker room. But Thomas contends that Jeffries, a 24-year-old with a high basketball I.Q. and sound character, may be the key.

Martin: Isiah is obviously a racist. This is the first time I've ever heard him use the term basketball IQ but isn't it funny how he only seems to use it when referring to tall, light-skinned brothers. As a small dark skinned man myself I take offense to this. I will protest outside the garden on opening day. Who's coming with me.

On a side note: So when Isiah makes comments like we need to acquire players to balance the team and create better chemistry does that put him in the camp with the rest of us pessimists? I'm starting to think Isiah isn't a Knick fan.

I am sure IT is not a Knick fan. If you were in the situation he is in, would you be happy.

all right this might be an issue better left untouched by a 1000 foot pole but I'm bored. People brought up whether basketball IQ is a racist term. I DON'T think anyone ever uses the term to try to be racist. However, I am curious as to whether any White player has ever been referred to as a "low IQ" player.

Maciej Lampe, Chris Dudley, Chris "The Birdman" Anderson, Jason "White Chocolate" Williams

Interesting. I defintiely don't remember Lampe getting that label in NY. I don't recall the other guys being called low IQ players as opposed to something more gentle like "shooting too often" in Jason Williams case. But I didn't read message boards that had many messages about them either.

Bonn, Lampe didn't even get on the floor much less get any press... from what little i saw of him during games, he's slow to react on defensive rotations, looks lazy on the floor, & isn't a particularly good passer either... that's why i say he's got a low bball IQ.

when has anyone ever said Chris Dudley & Birdman "shot too much"? those guys were rebounders, defenders & shotblockers... their offensive skillset was nonexistent

White Chocolate fits in better in And1 ball than it does in the NBA... this past year he played much more under control & helped MIA win a title, but throughout his career he's been known as a gunslinging all flash, no substance type player.

Oh, now I suppose all gunslinging all flash, no substance type players have a low bball IQ, too, huh?

Acutally I was considered a heady player with great athletic ability. An injury and resulting piss poor attitude in which I blamed everyone else for my failures instead of working hard turned me into an "all bench-performer" at the college level. Never turned into what I wanted to be and probably should have been. I learned at that point that you can have all the excuses on the planet. You can blame everyone on the planet for your failures. Some of these excuses may be valid. But it doesn't matter. I still failed to achieve what I wanted and that is the only thing that matters.

It's amazing that as I go older and realized all this stuff my game got a million times better. I ended up never recovering from my injury but was able to get farther than I thought I would in hoop. I still stink but I got the most out of what I had, after college. That's why it sickens me to hear the excuses for these players. I made the same lame ass excuses and look where it got me.

But doesn't coaching have a shtload to do with the so called basketball IQ?

Can you name me one player that has a "high basketball IQ" that never played for a hall of fame or multi championship winning coach on the pro or college level at the time of their alleged "high basketball IQ"?

karl malone used to be a foul machine until sloan snapped him out of it.

In the end it comes down to the player. Karl Malone had a desire to learn so he did. Some players are too busy trying to figure out how to get theirs so it doesn't matter who the coach is, they won't learn. In the end it doesn't matter. However you got your low "basketball IQ" you still have a low "basketball IQ".

Now most posts here say that you can always improve your knowledge of the game. But to improve you have to have the right attitude. Some players just don't have it. Normally becausee they don't really love the game. They just happen to be tall, athletic and it pays the bills, so they have no desire to learn. These are the types of players that GM's and scouts tend to stay away from.

On the other hand some players can have awful coach's or no coach's at all and still understand the game better than most. They just know how to react. Maybe they learned how players react from other team sports they played. Who knows. The important thing is they understand the game. The reasons aren't important for this conversation.

I can't beleive that some people disagree that some players understand the game better than others.

Oh, I was asking which White players have been labelled (meaning by many fans) as low basketball IQ--not really which might we look back on and now decide the label would apply. I asked because I wasn't aware of any White players getting this label.

wait, are you being sarcastic or what, cause perception is absolutely the key. Same as saying Marb is good player vs Marb is crap. Perception in the eyes of whomever.
