I can make a lot of things but I've never made goat curry before. Apologies. I make a great biryani though and not from the mix either!

biryani from scratch? with the saffron and everything? nice. which do you prefer, chicken or lamb?

btw, mins - where are you originally from?

Interesting. I have family living in Colombo 5 right now (UN rep or something). Spent a month or so there last year.

Wow, what a small world. Hamburg, Toronto, and Buffalo! I loved Hamburg and Toronto. They are both great cities. They are actually quite similar in certain ways. As for Buffalo, I went to college there so I have tons of great memories. I lived in Amherst. I miss the wings from Duffs anf Anchor Bar...
Silver, I have no idea what Rurouni Kenshin and Naruto & Bleach are (i'm no anime guy. but i'm fascinated by Japanese history especially the end of samurai's rule and the preceding turmoil. In fact my hero is this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakamoto_Ryoma).
anyway, I'll be happy to give you advice on where to go and what to do while you're in Japan. Yeah, things could be quite expensive over here, but if you plan ahead and know where to stay, you could save lots of $$$. Like Marv says Kyoto is a must. I also recommend Osaka & Tokyo, but you can do Tokyo in a day or two. Also, go to the countryside to see the real Japan. Check out an onsen (hot springs), sleep on tatami mats wearing yukata (kimono). Eat the real Japanese food, go to Izakaya, make some local friends, visit a middle school in the countryside and volunteer as an assistant for English teacher for a day (my friend did this and absolutely loved the experience having fun with Japanese kids), etc, etc.

OAK you got any hints on the job availability for German market research consultants in Tokyo?!? Ill do nearly anything!!!
Im working on my dissertation, which is an intercultural comparisson between the german and japanese youth and I plan to move there for a year or so. As I want to concentrate on my own research, Id have to work something like 25h a week and still earn enough for some cheap living! Any chances for that?!?

Dodger, I mainly focus on moving execs for Investment Banks, so I can't comment on the job availability for market research consultants here. Just do a bit of research on the net and send out feelers. You should be able to get the sense of the market fairly easy. Lots of people come here for working holiday and teach English for living. In the worst case scenario, this is something you could consider doing. I think you could make something around 3,000-4,000 yen per hour depending on your skills and experience in teaching languages. You may be able to charge a bit more for German. The best place to teach languages is at big corporations. It may be hard to get in, but once you're in, you can make quite a good money, and you only deal with mature, professionals.

TymeLessKnicks, you don't like Buffalo? Check this out: http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/~rapaport/Buffalo/buffalo.html

almost 3am. i'm off to bed now... Go Yanks!

come on OAK... spill the beans... where can one land some prime grade A japanese poontang? that's what everyone REALLY wants to know... at least, i do.

TMS, you need to go to clubs in ROPPONGI in Tokyo. It's a meat market out there - Japanese, Brazilian, Russian, American, European, Aisan, etc, etc. You can pretty much do well if you look decent and don't stink. If you just want to have fun with young Japanese girls, go to Shibuya or Harajuku. or just find a horny chick on the net and hook up with her (not that I do any of these things - I'm happily in relationship with a beautiful woman).

Thanks for the tips OAK!
The language teacher idea had me fascinated too but Im not sure if got the proper skill level!!!
Its allways a bit tricky to find a job where you can make enough to earn your living and on the other side is not too timeconsuming so I can still do my own research!!!

But hey that has been the difficult part here too so why should it be easier in a foreign country, where you are an analphabetic and have a hard time understanding anything!!! ;-)

Dodger, you can also work as a part-time male host at female only clubs in Tokyo if you're good looking. I hear that some guys make 10k+ a month doing this and they get tons of presents (like rolex watches, etc) from rich japanese women.

LOL!!! Well the looks shouldnt be a problem!!! ;-) In Japan I would probably be seen as tall and blond!!! :-b

But the working holiday visa explicitly forbids such jobs!!!

did the cultural triagle loop. Went south to through Hikkaduwa (sp?) and I think we stopped to visit friends in Galle (been a while and the names are a little vague for me). Shopping? I remember ODell's well and we did stop in a million other side towns to see what they were selling. What's the one meal where there is a lot of chopping of what looked like pasta/pastry.... it's like the perfect after-drinking food. Coterotie? Not a huge tea drinker but never had better.

Ahh Hikkaduwa is gorgeous. When I was there before the tsunami we stopped by this beach side restaurant for some swimming and lunch. They have coral reef tours that I still havn't gotten to see. I wonder if that hotel is still standing. I'll most likely go back in december. Have you been to Yale (pronounced yahluh)or Udawalawa to go on the safaris? I recommend the Udawalawe Elephant safari if you ever get to go back. You'll never have an up-close experience like that with elephants...by that I mean one elephant almost attacked the safari jeep all the "adults" we're in lol. Other that that it was amazing. Hell...you're likely to see an elephant on any given day in Sri Lanka. Kotthu-Roti is one of my favorites. You can get it in NY but its not the same as the stuff you get from the road side stops in SL.
