if i'm going to bust out the summer 2003 allen iverson's (which i haven't worn yet) to play ball, i need to trim down.

i'm 6'1" and around 205 (30 years old)
i need to get back down in the 190 range

i let myself go over the past full year.

what do i do?

i work a 9-5 in manhattan and live out in queens.

i have a treadmill at home (can't run on the pavement b/c of my knees)

what kind of workouts do you guys do in terms of weights and cardio?
how many days a week? for weights, what workouts do you do (i got a membership to bally's)? how do you rotate (reps/sets)? same for cardio.

This shouldn’t be that bad. If you want to trim down, don’t put too much time into lifting. For the first few weeks at least, try and run about 30 minutes a day. I read somewhere that your body dips into its fat resorviors after 20 minutes of accelarated heart rate. The 10 minute-mile speed on the treadmill is good for cardio. Also do situps everyday. It helps.

There is this new line of thinking that suggests increasing/decreasing the incline on the treadmill every 5 minutes for 20 minutes.

Lifting is much more fun. I pair them as: Chest/triceps - Back/biceps - shoulder/legs. Always do the big muscle in the pair, first. For the first month do about 3 exercises/muscle, 4 sets/exercise. If you do 3 days of weights and 5 days of cardio, you will kill those 15 pounts in 2 months. Gotta cut down on the beer too.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

I'm 22 years old, 6', raw vegan and 150 lbs, six pack, nice build. Four years ago, I was 205 until I became vegan, and then when I was raw, I shed all of the fat and toxins in my body, and did you know, New York Knicks scrub Ronnie Grandison was a raw vegan and still is?

Raw Vegan - Eats fruits veggies nuts and seeds only - organic - nothing else, no processed foods, no meat, no dairy, no cooked foods over 118 ... word up.

you need the fishmike spring training workout. Ive done different things for different sports but I think this will help you alot as we have similar builds.

First let me say this is based around bang for the buck. I work 7-5 on a slow day and I commute an hour each way from NJ->Manhatten just to get there. I dont have time for power naps and 2 hour workouts.

You need (I have):
running sneakers
2 x 45lbs dumbells (usually about $40 at a Models)
local gym membership

Every year (right now) I drop about 5 pounds. Doesnt seem like much but thats because I gain about 2-3 pounds of muscle and lose about 5-8 of fat. My goal is start the baseball season at 190 with strong legs. It takes me about 6 weeks

You can change it up (I do) but it goes something like this:
mondaysprints: run 40 yard dashes as hard as you can. walk back to where you started. If you need to suck a little extra wind dont beat yourself up, but dont stop walking. Do 5-8 until you have a stitch or your spit is thick. time: 20 minutes
tuessets of curls, pushups and shoulder shrugs while watching hoops
wed repeat tues
thurs repeat monday
fri repeat tues
sat: heavy lifting in gym; bench press and sitting rows. 5-6 heavy sets of each. Warm up with 2 sets of 20 pushups. total time: 50mins. If your not burnt after 40 mins your not lifting enough weight
sun: dips, pull ups, arm extensions, shoulder shrugs. Basicly everything that builds your shoulders/back that isnt a bench press or a sitting row

Eat protien after each workout. Plenty of vitamin C and a multi with your post workout meal. If you want to enhance your lifting elimate caffiene from your diet and have a redbull (or 2) before you lift.

Dont worry about cardio.. you will get plenty when you play. And DONT do any lifting with your legs at the gym. Just running sprints trains your legs to be explosive and powerfull. Work through shin splints, I get them every year I start.

Dont make me post before after photos :)

Make sure you eat 3 meals a day.Dont eat while watching TV.Dont go over 1500 calories per day.Dont drink alot of fruit juices or soda(diet ok). When you eat chew slowly so you dont wolf down your meal when you get hungry from dieting at first.I was told by one of the leading doctors in the field that calories were more important than carbs but also watch your fat content as well.

As far as excercise.Id find a gym with a soft floor like wood and start getting yourself acclamated to the stress on your knees by doing some suicides.Slowly at first.Dont throw yourself into all the cutting and sprinting from Bball without building up to it first.

If you want something more low impact Id try swimming.Great cardio and muscular benefits but very low impact. If you can find a pool in NYC.

One part of the body that gets overlooked in training for B-ball is the stomach muscles and it is essential if you want to get back your vertical or get some elevation in your jumper.Good luck.

well crack cocaine is supposed to be great at reducing body fat, especially if you smoke a couple of packs of cigarettes on top of it.

actually you hear this all the time, and the best line i have heard is eat less excercise more. I guess you can eat nuts and seeds if these measures dont work. If you want to be cheap about it raid the neighbors bird feeder.

ahh yes, the crack diet...perfected by the likes of mary kate olsen, mayor marion barry, and my man pookie.

thanks all for your suggestions.

i was rocking size 34 jeans early last year but am now in 36 - that is not good. i've been hanging with my ex-girl lately (we broke up over a year ago), and she was like "hey you got a little chubby" and then she was like "oh yeah, you're also fat". man, was i pissed :)

djsunyc,
Don't worry about calories. When you take away meats and dairy from your diet (vegan lifestyle), you will lose weight and become healthier. There is so much fat in animal and animal products, and it makes it very tough for our body to break down animal fat. Try vegan snacks and vegan organic frozen pizzas, etc. It's much better to have than the pizza that they make at pizzerias, etc. Organic fruits and veggies without pesticides is also great.

so what do you do, open up the frig and smack down a tomato like you were eating an apple? i mean do you eat bread? pasta? You must have a bag of planters in every room? give a detailed list of these foods if you have the time, im alwasy willing to look at something to lose weight. i kind of watch what i eat for sure, but i eat way to much of it. i eat a lot of those soy bean burgers etc.. egg whites non fat yogurt, but as you get older--i will be 37 in 6 weeks, every frikin thing sticks to you. i dont eat fried foods[none in like 12 years] and i only have a couple of real burgers a year and really only eat meat 1nce a week, usuually chicken or fish. but for a dude like me, its tough to eat the smaller thing because you end up eating a whole loaf of bread one day, 4 bowls of nature cereal etc....and I cant exercise like the normal guy anymore, i can go for 10-15 minutes at a pretty good pace most days then im tired for the next few hours and could never do it at night. i do eat the right things, but unfortunately the # of calories is probably my killer compared to what i can exert out. maybe i need to go to seeds:>(

that would radically change my diet. i am cutting back on meat. i used to eat meat twice a day, now i'm trying to cut down to 5-6 times a week. i think i need to ease into things. where do you get your calcium if no milk? i just started eating breakfast again - a bowl of cereal every morning. soy milk? wouldn't that taste putrid? you're right, i'm not worried about calories. my philosphy is that if i eat moderate meals and not really bad food (fast foods, fried foods, etc.) and do the workout plan i should be ok.

how/why did you become a vegan especially at such a young age?

damn man, all this talk is makin' me crave a big fat juicy medium-rare cheeseburger with onions, extra cheese, mushrooms, pickle with a side of chips washed down with a pitch of beer.

I'll do like a few situps afterwards.

I was vegeterian at first in 1999, and I had a mentor who would help me. When I was ready to make the change, I listened to my personal trainer and I noticed a different in my workouts. Being vegan is not for everyone. I must have been maybe 18 or 17 when I started with the vegeterian thing. And it's taken by steps...

Calcium....I get my calcium and protein from greens. Dark greens are great for that. Also, I track what I do with fitday.com You guys should try it! It's fun.

I only eat organic fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds.

Did you know that 8 large banana's are 900 calories?

doesnt matter and Ive had good results. You can do curls till the cows come home and not burn your arm muscles.

Every year my extended family rents beach houses down in NC. Nothing but chilling, cooking and swimming. I have 7 aunts and uncles and over 25 cousins that go. Anyway my uncle is about 55 and we hang out all the time. We split Yankee season tickets evey year, yada yada. Point is he's never lifted a weight in his life, yet the guy is diesel. He's got shoulders like a line backer. The reason? He works for the post office and lifts boxes every day. Thats it... repetition and repetition only. We would do pull ups and here I'm thinking my 15-18 straight is decent. He rips off 25-30 and gets bored, and he's not a light guy.

Everyone is different, but I have had MUCH more success with heavy repetition in smaller amounts than heavy workouts targeting body parts. Its kept me VERY strong over the years

dj, try mine. it's excellent on the abs and shoulders, and if you want to go all out, it can really burn your shoulders and strenthen your lower back. i try and bone at least 4 times a day. try and steer clear of any sandwich action it will make you think of food. also on the weekends try to double your rep's.

seriously, your main concern should be sugar. lay off it! apparently you have an office job so it's really easy to gain weight, drink alot of water. if and when you crave something w/flavor to drink, try gaterade.
as for what to eat, to lose weight quickly you can try a portional diet, i've tried that and it does work if you stick to it. what you do is eat pretty much anything you want (as strange as that may seem) but make it about the size of your fist in portions every three hrs. the healthier you make the the diet the quicker you'll lose weight. trust me though, it's alot harder than it seems due to the fact that your stomach is used to eating it's fill. you'll feel hungry at first, then you'll get used to it. btw, you'll also feel more energy because you won't have that full feeling anymore.

Man you guys are too funny. Lots of strong black coffee and Tanqueray martinis, extra dry, up with olives are the keys to my stellar health! Martin, sounds like we could share a good meal. Gotta get Hardcore in on it too!
