By Marc Stein
ESPN.com
The Phoenix Suns are closing in on the acquisition of disgruntled New Orleans swingman Jim Jackson, league sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

The trade for Jackson, expected to be finalized later Friday, would likely send three Suns reserves -- Casey Jacobsen, Maciej Lampe and Jackson Vroman -- to the Hornets. Jackson has has refused to report to New Orleans since he was traded by Houston for David Wesley just after Christmas.

The move has multiple benefits for Phoenix, which started the season 31-4 in spite of its serious depth shortage. Jackson, 34, would immediately give the Suns a veteran scoring option off the bench and also give coach Mike D'Antoni a ready-made replacement for Joe Johnson if the Suns can convince Philadelphia to part with center Samuel Dalembert in a swap for Johnson.

New Orleans, meanwhile, jumped at the opportunity to acquire three young players for Jackson, who made it clear that he was prepared to forfeit his salary (roughly $27,500 per game) for the rest of the season before he'd ever play a game for the Hornets.

I hope this means Lampe gets signficant minutes.

If lampe eventually developes nice, I know that some fans might feel a tinge of regret, but I really like the kid when he was here, and wish him well.

Didn't Colangelo say that last December's blockbuster would be known as the "Lampe" trade?

I guess Suns saw the same thing as Zeke if they are willing to give up a 19-20yr old 7'0 240 for a 30+ yr old guard forward.

Suns really do have a legit chance this year. If they can get delebert for shoeless joe jackson, they could make noise. Im sure colangelo had no idea how good this team could be this year. I think Jacobsen was a restricted FA and they would not reupp him. With some draft picks, they can likley can replace Lampe on the depth chart. Lampe won't put them over the top this year.

Isiah should not do a trade like that as we are not contending, we just pretending!

PETER VECESY

January 21, 2005 -- BARON Davis has a treacherous back (that requires surgery, I'm told, and prevents him from practicing when all other body parts are functioning normally), a ghastly contract ($62.9 million guaranteed — fully protected, no exemptions — over the next four seasons) and unsavory shot selection.
Additionally, the Hornets guard is decidedly unhappy about still being a Hornets guard.

If that's not enough negativity to asphyxiate interest in acquiring Davis, may I present the definitive deal breaker: According to a West Coast source, Davis' back is not covered by insurance.

Meaning the Hornets couldn't buy any (to alleviate the risk of a pre-existing condition) when they maxed out his contract three years ago, yet G-ed him up anyhow.

Meaning if the often-overweight Davis is forced to retire prematurely due to back problems, his team at the time will be left holding a bag of Benjamins.

Considering the wear and tear on Davis' legs, ankles and back at an early age (26 on April 13) and his physical defects in going forward, why would any team, no matter how much mad money an owner may have, take that gamble? At best, you're not going to get what you once saw in him, especially for a full schedule.

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

I don't see how the trade makes sense though unless they plan on moving Jackson for another player. They are stacked at GF with Richardson-Marion & Joe Johnson.

I agree it's a stupid trade......They are already playing Marion out of position. Why trade Lampe and another guy for JJ? It doesn't really make any sense. I was rooting for Denver to get JJ.

Is there room for JJ? He's Basically a sixth man on a team that has players that command alot of minutes.

That proves that nobody has a clue what teams are doing or what they would be willing to do.......

Oh well....I guess I gotta update my NBALive....

Phoenix had no depth and Jim Jackson is a gritty vet who can fit into pretty much any offensive and defensive scheme, especially up tempo ones. He can spell Q and JoJax.

Also, I'm assuming you noticed the part about JoJax for Dalembert being a possibility.

If Johnson's on his way out, they'll need Jackson, who, yes, was a bench player before having a resurgence in Houston. He won't mind fewer minutes, as long as he's playing for a contender.

Once the Suns surprisingly became the best team in the league until Nash went down, they realized they could win now. If they get Dalembert, they've substantially upgraded an already dangerous team.

Q-Rich is more of a spot-up shooter. If Jamal can play more intelligently, I think he has much more upside.

This deal makes a ton of sense if the Suns can find a way to get Dalembert for Joe Johnson. I don't know about you guys but a Suns lineup featuring Dalembert at Center would scare me because he would be a perfect fit on that team. They are already the best fastbreak team in the NBA, imagine how much better they would be with Dalembert blocking shots leading to even more fast breaks.
"This is a very cautious situation that we're in. You have to be conservative in terms of using your assets and using them wisely. We're building for the future." - Zeke (I guess not protecting a first round pick is being conservative)
