Bucks co-owner Wes Edens on Giannis Antetokounmpo: Sign extension or face trade

Milwaukee Bucks co-owners Wes Edens and Jimmy Haslam told ESPN in a joint 90-minute interview that they will decide the path to take with their two-time MVP together, and the most important factor will be whether Giannis Antetokounmpo signs the four-year, $275 million extension he is eligible to receive on Oct. 1. "Giannis is going into the last year [of his contract]," said Edens, the team's controlling owner until April 2028. "So one of two things will happen: Either he will be extended or he'll be traded." "The likelihood you'll let him just kind of play out the last year, we can't afford that. It's not consistent with what's good for the organization. That's not a Giannis issue. That's any player that's in their last year."

This is the team that stretched Dame to bring in Turner. Really rooting for them to get pennies on the dollar, just not in the East.

Try not to strangle yourself with the red string tying your conspiracies together.
That or its a web entanglement of Doris, Silver, and all things Lakers?

I'd assume the conspiracy would have Jokic moving to LA and Giannis heading to Denver, Lebron back to Cleveland and some wonky compensation package ending back with Bucks.

You know I gonna spin wit it

Ownership is in trouble. No playoffs money and losing their best asset in 3-6 months.

Giannis is getting old they need to trade him for assets and draft picks anyway.

Giannis probably can’t control where he goes at this point because the market is going to be smaller for him I think. His prime is narrow and the big contract still has to be there for him. Going to be really interesting to see where he ends up.

It goes without saying but, teams are going to want guarantees that he will re-sign. Giannis has a player option after next season so he will have a say in where he goes if Minny is going to maximize their return. They seem very motivated in getting the best return. They also have said that they value young players to keep them competitive.

Also it’s clear the bucks are asking way too much for him.

If true I now understand why Doris Burke bothers you so much.
To be fair I must ask myself why your comments similarly are so bothersome?

The relationship is over. But now I’m not sure I want Giannis. Whoa, crazy talk! Haha!

I’m actually starting to warm up to the idea of Giannis as i’m starting to wonder if this Brunson/KAT combo can truly get it done. I mean if we got all favorable matchups (1st rd: Raptors, 2nd rd: Boston, ECF: Cavs, Finals: SAS or Den) I believe they could do it, but it’s looking more than likely that won’t happen. We are going to play against at least one undesirable team (I.e. Detroit, CHA, ATL, OKC, etc) and I’m not confident right now. If we could somehow do a Giannis/Turner deal without giving up Mitch, OG, Mo, or Brunson then I would jump on that.

Mitch/ Turner
Giannis/ Mo D
OG/ McCullar
Hart/ Shamet
Brunson/ Deuce or Alvarado

Seems much more balanced defensively than this current team. Too bad KAT/ Bridges/ Kolek/ Hukporti/ Dadiet and picks probably isn’t enough to get the deal done. Unless the Bucks are willing to do it for loyalty to Giannis by putting him in the best possible situation for him (it would help if he’d be a good soldier for the Bucks right now and just do what they ask).

I bleed orange and blue for life.

Just saying that Brunson + Hart salary add up to Giannis within like 101% of the salary. I don’t think it’s by chance. You got to give to get, but I think the below team would get after it. I’d say it has a higher chance of winning than our current roster.

Deuce / Alvarado / Kolek
Bridges / Clarkson / Shamet
OG / Diawara /
Giannis / Sochan /
KAT / Robinson / Huk

Health and such are a concern. Bold move to make and maybe not necessary to succeed here. But I’d rather have KAT + Giannis than Brunson + Giannis.

I’d love to see this variation:

Brunson Mikal OG Mo Giannis

If a blockbuster trade for Giannis happened I'm going to go out on a limb and say the two players the Knicks would not include are Mitch and Mo.

Mitch because now that he's healthy and playing at his potential is truly dominant in his role. His impact on games is growing and it is profound. The success of the load management experiment has gotten him to the point where he should be able to go hard for 30 minutes in a playoff game. His presence changes everything for this team. Lose him and we will struggle IMO, even with the addition of Giannis.

Mo, because we all see a future star we can grow and integrate into the starting lineup the next one or two seasons. Next to Giannis, we'd have incredible defensive length and real firepower on offense.

You put Mitch/Mo/Giannis into a starting lineup and you can fill in the blanks after that. It would probably be Brunson, because I don't believe Dolan would let him go. However, these are businesspeople and Giannis could replace Brunson as the new face of the Knicks, so you never know.

If you kept OG and had an OG/Giannis/Mitch/Mo starting unit I honestly think the team will be better with a pass first PG. We've all seen OG go on ten game runs against good and bad teams alike. He fades away for stretches too, but I think that is largely due to how Brunson runs the club.

That starting four would be very hard to score against and we'd light up the scoreboard. With Mitch in the mix our second chances should make us one of the best offense in the league. It would be mostly a half-court offense, but with perimeter shooters in OG and Mo and whomever else is in the rotation.

If the Knicks need to trade Mikal and KAT to get Giannis they should do it. We could roll with Brunson and see if the chemistry is better and if it isn't then we can get a more traditional PG.

The main attributes this kind of lineup would require from their PG is a creator with the ability to break down an offense, good passing skills and perimeter shooting.

Brunson can do all three. With him it is just a matter of emphasis.

I think Giannis is a more aggressive person than KAT and he would assert himself on the game and he would demand better PnR execution from Brunson. And he'd probably get it. Brunson is a shorty and not an elite passer or PnR expert, but we've seen him do it at a high level in spurts. He needs someone more alpha than him to push him in that direction, therefore Giannis could be a good influence on Brunson.

Brunson
Mo
Mitch
OG
Giannis

That looks like a contender to me. Big as hell, a little bit slower than the rest of the league, but would F U up on the defensive end and make you beat them from the perimeter, because some nights nobody would get close to rim against this lineup. They could impose their will on the offensive end. The combination of 3 point shooting with interior dominance could give them the best inside/outside offense in the league. Pace may be slower, but the efficiency should rise so that's OK. They'd have their share of fast breaks with that defense though with OG and Mo running the outlet on steals, blocks and turnovers.

Giannis is definitely getting traded before the start of the 2026/27 season
