Would Thibs develop the bench, recent draft picks? The answer to all three is likely "no".
Watching the Finals right now, and both teams are moving the ball like crazy. Thibs had Brunson dribbing for most of the shot clock. 2-3 players have touched the ball on most teams before Brunson gives up the ball in 24 seconds.
We need a coach who will help Brunson take his game to the next level, and that means a lot less ball-stopping.
Watching the finals I have the same frustrations as watching my Knicks. OKC does basically the same thing Knicks do on offense. Which is give the ball to their best player then give him a pick or two to create. Specially in the last part of the game. Didn’t see what you said in terms of ball movement. I do agree with you and said it many times, our offense was too JB ball dominant. We had too many games where we went to the JB show late in the game. Problem was that it worked for most of the year. Do think it was by design but also because JB did not use the pass options available. Question is will this change with another coach? Many successful teams do the same. Some forget SGA had the second highest usage rate(by .3 at 34.6%). They were considered the best team in NBA. In fact, most top tier teams had their best player over 28%. Including JB at 29%. So Thibs not the only ISO player dominant coach. Coaches need to win to keep their jobs. Do so by using their best players the most.
Don’t think Thibs was bad at adjustments. Or that it is as important as guys just playing well. We basically lost the series to Indiana because Knicks had the worst collapse in playoff history in game 1, supporting players inconsistency , unforced turnovers and poor FT shooting. Did we beat the the defending champs because of his adjustments? Every coach gets credit for “adjustments “ after wins and lack of after loses.
Would agree that Thibs main issue is the inability to develop the bench. Think he may change though, as many coaches will, after watching how the depth of Indiana has made such a difference. Last night win was a good example. Indiana’s bench scored a ridiculous 45 points. Was our roster as good though?
Would agree that with Thibs, it would be hard to find out as he rarely looks to develop them. Evident by how he keeps in starters with 15 plus leads.
After stating my displeasure for Thibs being blamed for loss, I am now just interested in getting a good coach. One that promotes a more balanced offense, develops a deeper roster and most of all can maybe attract better role players or a superstar. I guess I have been convinced that Johnny is the next Pat Riley.
