Philc, Viership of all major sports are down from pre pandemic levels.
We been through all this. Some of it is due to fan disasisfaction over the product. History of the game demonstrates this has happened before. Recall late 70s NBA finals were on tape delay! Cocaine was cited and league was getting a very "urban" feel to it. Not my words mind you.
Then Bird and Magic were shoved down our throats!.....but it worked.
Then Jordan came as did expansion.
and looky here, just yesterday while your wallowing in some form of self induced glory to some how prove Adam Silver is inept the Lakers alone (no arena in valuation) are sold at a record valuation.
Ratings have been dropping for a number of years yet the new TV deal just kicked in and was negotiated while ratings dropped.
Streaming services are in part responsible for the uneven data. Thing those numbers take a while to collect.
There is more to all of this but it's lost on you.
For others the TV deal is valued high because NBA hits a younger demographic than say Baseball. NFL has declining numbers but they are still very high and advertisers see value.
If ratings were the only measure then you'd have a point. Its not.
That the games go on into vacation season is an issue for the league.
But then when there are rookies of interest like Wemby, they sold out the arenas in Vegas for summer league. Demonstrates the off season interest by geeks like us.
Two small market teams were not expected to draw. Here we are with a game seven and while I'd be surprised if the ratings are block buster they generally improve the longer a series goes on. NO Lebron, No Durants in this series. No players our fanbase hates but the rest of the sporting world knows and would tune in. NBA has great players but no great supply of young super stars that are charismatic or transcend the viewing public. Same for Baseball. Judge is its biggest star. After him? Fans of the sport know the great ones but not outside. NHL? NO superstars that are selling wheaties either. NFL? Player movement puts team first. Same with all sports now. Legal betting has made sports viewing habits change.
Silver is killing it but you're not equipped to understand. There are many aspects to the business of sports. It's quite interesting really. Take some meds and perhaps spend some quality time learning. The subject of European expansion is quite riveting.
