Trade for him and awkward fit pair with Brunson?

Don't go after him even though he keeps sending love letters monthly?

I am very glad we did not overpay for him. Of course he’s a nice player even borderline great but what we would have given up would have made the team worse - in my opinion. I’m not for the OG overpay either but as a player he would be a much better fit than Mitchell. Not enough there to mortgage the farm I say.

Have to move on. Clev's will want to recoup what they lost to Utah and Mitchell's fit here is murky. We saw the issues the Cavs had with Garland and Spida in the backcourt and I don't see those defensive issues improving if you substitute Brunson.

OG could be a factor here as well as with OG and Mitch you probably have enough defense to balance an offensive powerhouse trio of Brunson - Mitchell - Randle.

Sort of the Denver model who covers all of the defensive weaknesses their stars have with just two guys.

I think the FO most likely wants to make a move but keep the "big trade" scenarios open for guys like Mitchell or even Embiid. They don't seem desperate to make the home run play and it's probably because they know they have another shot at Mitchell in their back pocket at the very least.

wow, yea he flirts with the Knicks all the time, but he could have put and end to it if he only came out and said i want the Knicks, instead it appears and he said it, He thought he was Garden Bound when with Utah.

Martin this is a tough one for me. I think DM is a top talent in the league and not even 27 yet, but we have Jalen, and we've witnessed two teams of DM and a smallish PG. Good teams but never got to that next level.

I'm guessing now and hope for Leon it all depends on the cost. he won't come cheap, Cleve imo will want a nice return since they sent out a nice package to get him.

If it means Randle going the next question who is the PF?

Could RJ be who Clev would ask for with more? robin Lopez is off to Bucks so they may need a backup center although Jones is there?

Honestly can't give an answer to more thought and if there was a package to put to this happening.

I think DM will be a Knick eventually. I think he makes more sense now.

Last summer we didn't know what we had with Brunson, now we do. I'm not sure Brunson is allowed to blossom with DM here like he did last year. Now we know and DM can't come in here and just completely take the ball from Brunson.

Heck we didn't even know if Randle could ever repeat 2020 again, now we know he can, at least during the reg season.

Now we also have guys like Hart and DDV which makes trading IQ or Grimes easier now if need be vs trying to scrap together a supporting cast around DM last summer.

We know we are much closer to being a contender now as well to make a move for a guy like DM.

Our assets have also gained in value now and we aren't dealing with Ainge anymore either.

That's why im completely against using our assets for a role player like OG. When I think if we are patient we can get a real star like DM.

At minimum, they must know they will have another chance to take a swing at him as he will hit the market again soon.

well the good news is talented players now want to play here because they want to win and not just soak us dry

it's easy to envision situations where he's a real asset if the money can work, e.g., somehow RJ's shot gets more reliable and plays 3, and DM plays 2. It's also easy to see situations where it backfires -- too small, not enough basketballs on court to satisfy JR, JB, DM, RJ

I would like to think this can turn into a situation where we have some leverage, e.g., DM says he wants NYC and won't sign an extension with Cavs.

We can definitely use a closer in addition to JB. At the moment JR and RJ are too unreliable in that role. ANd Quentin has been an unwilling shooter.

Hopefully the Knicks plan is something like Quentin and a small number of draft picks as the core pieces

We still need shooting more than scoring

agreed.

Maybe there's a 3 way deal to be made where CLE gets OG and TOR gets RJ but the issue is I don't think CLE is ready to trade him just yet.

He is 100% opting out after next season. If he is traded it will be after this season in the summer. Cleveland are thinking playoffs, they are not trading him this season

agreed, I think if Clev comes out of the gates slow, and not in top 6 by the deadline they will consider moving him then. The problem imo is if they wait for him to be an expiring his value may not be has high. Teams must know Knicks are on his mind and won't spend big assets to get a one year player.

Randle and Brunson have player options in 2025/26. If they opt out and Mitchell opts out we could have our very own super friends....except none of these dudes are friends. Now that I think about it, does Randle even have friends? His rolodex seems more empty than Melo's. Randle needs to do Team USA or something and start recruiting. Randle, get on that banana boat!

Mitchell seems like a guy who wants to play for the Knicks. If you are Leon and company, you can't ignore that cause it would be like walking into house money.

But the fit is horrible, right? Or at least you would need to build 3-5 that fits those 2 guys exactly and that is very hard.

I think it's doable. I think you do the Cleveland model. Smaller backcourt and load up the frontcourt with size/power/defense.

I understand Cleveland got smoked by us with this model, but I don't think it was because of the small backcourt, moreso because of the lack of shooters, depth and lack of interior strength/scoring.

Not to mix threads but if you can pull off an OG trade I think a lineup of Brunson - Mitchell - OG - Randle - Mitch is exactly the kind of lineup that could contend for a title with that backcourt.

I think you would need an OG Anunoby type prototypical 3&D wing, rim protection in Mitch and Randle when he actually tries on D is very good to make it work. Brunson is not a total liability on D. I think it would work offensively. Defense would take some creative scheming. When I watched Mitchell on Utah they always switched when the ball handler would go at Mitchell.

The fit with Brunson is the big problem. Knicks defensive rating fell off a cliff last season. RJ has consistently rated as a poor defender despite seemingly passing the eye test, so maybe replacing his minutes with DM and sliding Grimes down to the 3 works, but it's an open question. Knicks are kind of in the "if ain't broke, why fix it category" There was something special about that Nova squad and DDV was the x factor that made it work. If Knicks regress this season a big trade should be considered but until then I want to ride this feeling out.
