A sad day. Most of us weren't even alive to witness the 70s Knick teams but we all know who Willis Reed was and what he did. A true legend who will never be forgotten!

RIP Captain!

Glad to say I was alive and old enough to be at some games. RIP, Cap! Sad day indeed.

Which modern player(s) should have to watch that clip of Willis coming out of the tunnel on one leg? The stuff of myth, but it did happen. Chills.

And at the "new" Madison Square Garden - sheesh. Definitely feel a little older today. Salute to one of the greatest Knicks.

Very sad - he was a man’s man who exuded both kindness and incredible toughness.

I first fell in love with basketball and the Knicks in the playoffs leading up to the 1st championship in 69/70 —- at 9 years old. I think it was a Knicks/Bullets with Gus Johnson / Wes Unseld televised weekend playoff game that initially hooked me and I’ve been hooked ever since.

My favorite Knick was always Clyde but Clyde has always been clear his favorite Knick has always been Willis Reed - the Captain.

I wasnt alive but my uncle grew up watching that era and its why he was a Knick fan. His stories of going to games in the 70s were nuts.

Rest well Cap

Same. My dad was always team Willis. He thought Walt was an egotistical showboat at the time. He talks about that era like it was yesterday. Basketball in the New York just hits different than most cities. It's part of the lifeblood of our shared history. At some point you're going to hear about Willis hobbling on to the court for game seven and there's a good chance that story is going to get embellished.

I had the honor of sneaking into Knicks games and watching the championship team play. Willis always was very personable to the fans at courtside and always had a smile on his face for them BEFORE the game. RIP CAPTAIN

I'm glad he lived a good life, maybe great life. 80 seems too short, but god bless him and thank you for bringing 2 championships to NYC.

Selfishly hoping we can keep Clyde much longer!

Hopefully the next Knick Championship isn't too far away!
