Yeah, I just went there.

Back in 2020-21, I had a conversation with a friend (Celtic fan) who hadn't watched much of Randle at the time, saying that he was the best player since Ewing (sorry, yes, I think both that year, and this, he has a better well rounded game, a better team effect than Carmelo, due to his defense and passing). I even uttered the words, "he may even be a better all-round player than Ewing was."
Yes, Ewing holds just about every record in the Knicks' books that doesn't belong to Clyde (or apparently EF! (but give it time)). But as good as Ewing was, as much as we loved those teams, on offense, I remember very plainly that Ewing was pretty much a black-hole on offense. I remember clearly the point guards passing him the ball and him doing his 3 dribbles/(carries) before launching a shot, or passing it back to the PG - just to DEMAND THE BALL BACK AGAIN!
I still think that Ewing's defense was a level above JR's.
But, I might be inclined to argue that Randle is a better all-round team player - at least when his head is screwed on right. And his teammates will be able to excel to greater levels with him than they ever could on Ewing's teams.

Love to hear everyone's thoughts.

Goddamit. He's the last person who needs to see this. Can you 🔒 the Martin? Nothing good is coming from this thread.

You have to establish a system of coordinates in order to be able to objectively make that statement. JR better passer? Yes. 3 point shooter. Yes. Ewing's game was different. Ewing was a defensive stalwart. Different players. 🍎 to 🍊
I couldn't. If one was doing captains draft and had a choice of Ewing or Randle , which player would you pick?

The way I see it they are similar offensively at their peaks, but while Randle gives effort most of the time now on defense, ewing was elite.

Comparing Julius Randle to Patrick Ewing is like trying to compare Patrick Ewing to Walt Clyde Frazier.

It's impossible due to 3 things.

1.) Different NBA Era.
2.) Completely different position(s).
3.) Completely different styles of play (both sides of ball).

4.) Ewing led New York to 13 Conservative Trips to the Playoffs, 11 Semi-Finals, 4 Eastern Conference Finals and 2 NBA FINALS Appearance(s).

#33 was just, different.

All I'll say is this.

Patrick Ewing is my #1 favorite Knicks Player of All-Time follow by both of Carmelo Anthony/Julius Randle and/or Julius Randle/Carmelo Anthony (no specific order) rounding out my top 3 Favorites of All-Time (wasn't alive for Walt Clyde Frazier days).

And yes Julius Randle's 2022-2023 season @ 28 years old is even more overall dominant than Melo's 2012-2013 season @ 28 years old.

🗽An NYK🏀Legend in the makings🗽

⭐2022-23 Randle @ 28 Year Old⭐

✨2012-13 Melo @ 28 Years Old✨

Yes.

Julius Randle has evolved into an absolute NBA SUPERSTAR here @ 28 years of age and Julius Randle's 2022-2023 is on the verge of going down (within the Record Books) as New York Knicks Franchise-Legendary (NYK HISTORY IN THE MAKING).

Two warriors. And talented scorers.

Randle a more willing passer.

Ewing more imposing. And obviously proved himself over many years.

Different positions, different eras and rules. Hard to compare them.

If I can pick 1 star and four average players, and the stars are Ewing and Randle, I’m taking Patrick.

How about this question… if you swap Mitch and Julius with Patrick and Oak, do we win a championship in the 90’s?

Nope, but Ewing, in his prime and in this era where offensive players are afforded much more protection from defenders, would've been a force.

Ewing today would be Embiid

Good take. Im trying to visualize Ewing bringing the ball up as does embiid.

If you want to compare Randle with Melo, then you can make an argument as to who will have the bigger impact, but Randle as a LONGGGGG WAY TO GO before you can start comparing his impact to Ewing.

Ewing has won way more games than Randle, from putting the team on his back. Body of work.

Agree. Randle vs Melo is a better discussion.

Why do we have to pull down the great knick players of the past? Why can't we enjoy the moment without mentioning Ewing? This reminds me of Lebron breaking Kareem's total points record. Does that mean Lebron is now better than Kareem? Hell no. Two different players, eras, etc. Both are great players. Randle and Ewing are great players. Does it really matter who's better? I know this is an open forum, but in general I have a problem with comparing these new age players vs the ventage players that set the ground work.

Born in Brooklyn, Raised in Queens, Lives in Maryland. The future is bright, I'm a Knicks fan for life!

Bernard King played 206 games in 4 seasons. That 4th he played just 6 games.
Randle if he finishes the season 296 games after 4.

King went from 23ppg in GSW, to 24, 27 and 31 his last magical season. Team also advanced in playoffs.
If the king era was hyped, and It was, this is also as well.
Im not trying to tear down anyone, but lets give it time before we start anointing randle anything.
Melo had a nice 7 year run that really did nothing notable. King was awesome in a very brief tenure which magnifies the short era.
Ewing? 11 year all star of 15 seasons. Think of the notable series and accomplishments.
