This means they do not intend to trade RJ, because he now can't be included in the trade. If a Mitchell deal gets done, it will have to be with Randle, Grimes, Toppin, or Quickley as the key player (or a combination, with Fournier or Rose as a given included piece to make the salaries work).

I love the fact Rose set a deadline. And everyone thought he was being strung along. Now the pressure is ALL on Ainge, if the Knicks are even interested in a deal, because Leon has basically pulled out of negotiations unless Ainge heavily compromises.

I love this. Saying you are out of negotiations is one thing but doing something that basically trashes 8 weeks worth of work to say your out? Amazing display of confidence, negotiating, and spite.

Surprisingly this guy has sources. He called RJ extended or traded within 24hrs.

I guess the name is apt…

That also gets me excited for Grimes long term.

Also that trade offer was fair. Five first round picks, RJ, and Fournier. Ainge wanting more is absurd.

F Ainge. He thinks he is trading KD or a prime Lebron. He wanted us to add more unprotected picks and Grimes to that already good offer. Unless Ainge backs off his demands I am good with not trading for Mitchell. I have no interest in being added to the list of teams fleeced by Ainge. I did not want RJ to be included in the trade anyway. It seems the only reason why he was included is because they thought Grimes would replace his production in time.

Very weird phrasing with the Jerry West tidbit. How exactly do you "confirm" something like that? And this isn't coming from a butt-hurt RJ fan (i like Grimes too), just a basketball fan trying to figure out how a consultant(?) With no ties to the organization would confirm something so arbitrary (as of now).

Can't say this regime is not proactive. It's a gamble, but they don't sit around with their d***s in their hands. Hopefully Randle bounces back and we look forward to a solid year.

I hate that offer because it still leaves a glut at PF and too heavily dependant on 2 below average height guards. Grimes isn't big enough to play a SF spot (I think he is your prototypical SG). Trading RJ and Fournier leaves you no SF at all except maybe Reddish (once again doesn't make sense with how he has been treated here).

And that is not to mention the amount of picks you are giving up while still including RJ 22 year old 20 ppg scorer who can defend (and currently your best prospect).

That trade makes no sense.

NBA circles are small so maybe West has ties to someone in the FO. I choose to believe everything because he was dead on with the main part of the info. We go months without nothing and he says within 24hrs this will happen and exactly that happens with Woj confirming it was an either or situation. This was not an open ended guess. The either or situation and the Monday deadline are hard calls.

Also as a consultant West might have charged for that call and potentially to scout Grimes for them.

I never wanted to do the trade, based on fit and have said Ainge basically shot himself on the foot trying to do this deal after FA let alone the draft. If he did this trade before the draft I think he would have got Grimes, RJ, match salary, pick #11 and two more unprotected picks. Only because the Knicks would have been able to build around that Mitchell and Randle in FA. Once they got Brunson the roster fit was never going to be good…

Also essentially a vet, one of the youth, and five picks (2 unprotected, 3 protected) is a fair deal regardless of who they sent out.

No scout will say he will be better. They will say he has higher upside. They will say he has the potential.

According to this, Jerry West definitively says Grimes will be better than a player who, while inefficient, has put up 20 ppg in the NBA. Has defended the best wings in the league well. Has carried a team offensively. Has averaged over 23 PPG for an extended period of time in the NBA.

I'm sorry there is not enough good tape on Grimes to make that statement. Grimes got 22ppg in the summer league and **** the bed when he came up against a team geared to stop him in a championship game. No one has any idea how that translates. I currently see a good comp for Grimes as Desmond Bane.

I’m excited to have RJ back. As we’ve learned, everyone in this league is tradable as we’ve seen players like Harden and Westbrook move around as if $40m/ year wasn’t a big deal.

RJ signed a deal dramatically less than max - I’d call it fair market value with upside.

Let’s see how things play out with the rest of the roster and whether a Mitchell deal gets done. I’m very much in favor of such a deal, particularly if we lose relatively few players and more draft assets.

The FO leveraged the Utah negotiations to get RJ to sign for less than the max. Smart.

Plus now, whichever way the Utah talks go, Ainge will be left with a pie in his face. Brilliant.

This of course means that some place like Miami might get Donovan for a Herro and a song, but that's life. Our FO needed to send a strong message throughout the league that we are no longer dummies to be screwed with.

Also a Heat poster who has a good rep for insider info on the Heat gm board said that earlier in the day the jazz had phoned the Heat to try and re-engage with them, said they liked their offer, if they could just add two more 1st round picks. Said the Heat told them nope, that was their best offer.

Ultimately I can see the Jazz falling back on the heat offer of two white players (Utah and Ainge reverting to form), Herro and Duncan and a few picks.
