Whats that?
You get your star, or player you think is the cause of grief off the team, “Then what”…………

We get Donovan Michell? Whats the cost? Then what? What is left to field a team. Utah is about to go down. Is it the coach Quinn snyder will have plenty of suiters. Is it Gobert? He the reason? Donovan is hurt. Do they bring it all back? how do they get to the next level, or do they rebuild now? And with whom?
I’d guess two 1st round picks, RJ, and one of Came/Grimes. HOw does spider pair with Randle?
Im assuming Randle is not traded. His trade trigger with 4 years left is big. Never say never, but not yet. Donovan is 6-1, in his prime, he will make between 30-37 mil per for 4 more years and he has a 15% kicker as well.
Then what?

Brunson. Not close to a max guy in my opinion. True, best comp is FVV. 20mil per is about right. Not Donovan Mitchell, but much less to pay and sign and trade is far easier. Cost? Obvious is Mitch Rob. Thats on Dallas if they want that. brunson has control and can dictate where he wants to go. Knicks can gain leverage by clearing cap to sign him but that price is not determinant. We could give Evan to Detroit for a 2nd round pick to just clear it. Doubt Dallas wants evan with Timmy.
Dallas might see the Wise DRose as attractive, with a pick for brunson as attractive. They start Dinwiddie and can bring Rose and Timmy off the bench.

For us…..then what?

Randle stays, Obi? Then what?
Other PG plays? can IQ really step up and start? If you bring in Brunson, he starts. Then what?

“Then What” matters as much as the move. Yes, Melo was great but we could never fulfil a roster around him to matter beyond the geriatric 2014 54 win team that retired 5 knicks-Kidd, Kurt, Kmart, Rashweed and Camby. Lets not forget 35 year old rookie Pablo!!! Good times. Then what? Oh ****, “Bargs”! Thats what!

I am satisfied our brain trust with Aller will set their price and not go crazy over it. Get the asset at the lowest possible cost and a reasonable read on the market. without hindsight, its no easy task.

Anything with Randle staying makes my stomach turn. I don't think we can move forward with him. Trade him before his value gets worse or he does something stupid.

If you can ascertain his value within reason “THEN WHAT”? What salary and with whom comes in his place?
we have a bit of a crowded roster as it is. Your bringing back a fairly large amount of salary in the form of one or more players.
If the goal is to improve, how does this help outside of subsiding your nausea?

Well "then what" pretty much nails what is left out of a large percentage (majority?) of speculation/wish listing that goes on in places like these. It's like a beat up old guy who can't get a date getting a Viagra prescription. Then what?

Well maybe not exactly.

Only shot at us getting a star is to draft em. Trading for one at this point wouldn't be good for long term future.

If we can add Brunson and have the outgoing be (i know, wishful thinking) Randle, the Dallas First Round pick and maybe some 2nd rounders, then I like where we'd be. If we're picking at 12/13 - maybe swap with Dallas to sweeten the deal, but honestly with FA S&Ts, the team sending the player out is only getting marginal value back.

I am also thinking our best asset is Obi. I don't know what we can do- maybe RJ (not a full believer of his upside) Obi, Filler for Mitchell. We might as well include RJ's buddy, Reddish.

Then your line up is:

IQ
Donovan
Grimes (?)
Randle
Robinson

your bench is Burks, Rose, Fournier, McBride & Simms.

Then you are hoping Donovan is able to get Randle back to better form. IQ takes another step. You clear out some players and hopefully combine talent into Donovan.

I almost like that line up, though Donovan has not played well this playoffs.

1) Mitchell for IQ, Reddish, Randle and 3 draft picks.
2) Resign Mitch Robinson
3) Use MLE on Montrezl Harrell (or some other PF). Use Harrell for simplicity.
4) Use the Biannual on Tony Snell (or a similar wing)
5) Fill in the last spot with the 2nd rd pick. Pick the longest most athletic player from the combine.

Mitchell/Rose/McBride
Fournier/Grimes/2nd Rd Pick
Barrett/Burks/Snell
Toppin/Harrell/Gibson
Robinson/Noel/Sims

6) Add Ron Adams to the coaching staff. Unclear if he leaves GSW, but he was Thibs offense guy in Chicago and could really supplement this coaching staff. Pay the man his money.

7) Implement an eFG based offense scheme. Mitchell is lead and Barrett is 2. Ball movement and quality shots are key.

8) Win Championship.

Then what?

As talented as D. Mitchell is I think we're better off keeping RJ and trying to upgrade elsewhere (eg PG, C). If Utah would take Randle + picks I would do it but don't think trading RJ, IQ or Toppin + 2 or 3 1st round picks is worth it for Mitchell. Maybe RJ never gets to that level but also don't think Mitchell puts us that much closer - due to all that we would lose in the trade.
I think rolling the dice on Zion could be worthwhile. I think using Randle and Mitch to go after Ayton could also move us in the right direction. To answer your question - there is no singular move that puts us in that top tier. We probably need some unanticipated luck to make a serious upgrade in talent. Maybe Cam Reddish puts it together and we can package him, some picks, etc... I think RJ is my only definite building block this offseason.

If forced to pick a move - I'd see if NO would take Randle, Mitch and 2 #1 picks for a package with Zion. Otherwise I'd go smaller and try to land a Brogdan or Tyus Jones and run it back. If possible I'd trade Randle for anything that doesn't hurt us going forward. Fournier to the bench as 6th man. Grimes to the starting unit. Toppin and Reddish share time at PF ideally.
Increase tempo at all costs...

I haven’t watched D.Mitchell that much this year or the playoffs. But I have a few sports friends who have their own sports website or blog. And the way they talk about D.Mitchell reminds me of Harden. They claim he has checked out mentally and his lack of defensive IQ or just doesn’t care, allows players to just blow by him.

He’s a great player and would be the best player on our team. But so is Randle and we trying to ship him out. Sometimes the collective whole is better that the single parts. For example, IQ in a vacuum is not on the same level as D.Mitchell. We all agree there.

But IQs impact on Obi, RJ and others out weighs what we could possibly get from D. Mitchell. It’s not like we are getting Shaq in a trade, someone whos unstoppable and will carry this team. D.Mitchell is having a hard time with Utah. He will potentially turn into a cancer like harden, which is my biggest fear vs IQ, RJ, Reddish, Grimes, Deuce. IQ is like a bolt of energy that spreads to all the young players on the team. So that makes IQ value pretty high to me.

I said the same thing about dude that was the last player on the bench. He was our biggest cheerleader and even from the sideline he was so animated he injects his energy into the team on those big momentum plays. Never over look the power of chemistry which is something we have developed over the years, especially with our young core.

This is the first time since I remember being a fan, to have this much young chemistry on our team. I vote we build around that, starting with removing Randle. And we are too crowded so we need to cut bait with some of the vets we have like Noel and Burks.

I said this last year and I’ll say it again this year and the following years. Unless there’s a clear plan to build a championship team over the summer like Miami did with Lebron, and if D.Mitchell is part of that larger plan, then go for it. But from what I’ve seen in this FO and who’s a available via trade or FA, it’s not worth gutting the team or trading our young players. Remove Randle and the vets. Let IQ and RJ take over.

I think they should trade Fournier, Burks, and Noel for Gordon Hayward and pick 15. I also think they trade that Dallas pick to move up to take Dyson Daniels at pick 8 or 9 and draft EJ Liddel at #15 (because Sochan is gone by then). They should grab Jalen Smith with their MLE. Resign Mitch, Extend RJ, let Cam, Obi, and IQ earn their money next summer.

IQ/Rose/McBride
RJ/Grimes/Dyson
Hayward/Reddish/Liddel
Randle/Toppin/Taj
Mitch/Smith/Sims

The biggest difference is this year during the regular season. Thibs has to open the rotation. They got to get into his thick skull that once you get into the playoffs, then you can play 8 guys only to your hearts content. That would be the “deepest” Knicks roster, maybe ever of legit NBA talent. Hayward while very injury prone still has 1A upside too but on a two year contract.

I haven’t thought about that trade but I like it. And I’m sure with his injury history they would entertain trading him for the right price. Adding vets to this young charlotte team could be a win win for both sides.

It’s deeper than that, they are going to go into the luxury tax once they resign Miles Bridges who is their starting SF. If they trade Hayward now they know they won’t go into the repeater tax next year when those guys expire. Plus they get depth with solid players to help their young team develop. It saves them 31 Million long term not even including the repeater tax money.

LOL, thats actually makes sense. What we learn this fine day. Zion can’t wait to sign his Extension. Nola bowed out with pride and while Nola was not forthcoming nor was Zion about his injury, the fact is the kid if healthy is a hell of a player. They will pay him. He proves he can stick, and he wants out, they can trade him then. But reality is its better to be dysfunctional with 186mil guaranteed than not and risk a career ending injury and be broke.
That don’t mean they all live happily ever after. But just because he likes MSG, as do half the league when they stick a mike and ask them that say they do, don’t mean he wants to be a knick. Fans then be like “Then h ain’t cut out for it”. Might be true. But it don’t make us any greater of a franchise.

Timberwolves. They blew leads and now D’angelo Russell and KAT taking a lot of heat. They lost to a very good Memphis team after making the playoffs. Now fans want to blow it up. Simple fandom is “Get rid of the underperforming player with an open concept move that on paper makes us better and satisfies frustration.

Then what?

Anyone who seriously thinks the Knicks will trade Randle instead of just some 'wishful' thinking has got to spin a narrative to explain that Dallas trip with the Knicks brass. You don't take an exiting employee to an interview.

the only spin I can come up with, and it's weak, is they were trying to sell him on going to Dallas. Look, this team is so, you can be their missing piece.

Honestly probably makes more sense to trade RJ than Randle.

Top 4 picks this draft are PF’s? Does this affect Obi’s situation? Trade value matters as demand might not be there for a few teams. OBI is not a “young” player (teenager) and undetermined step in starter.
I don’t have an agenda of hate on Randle or some unrealistic view on Obi given his last few games. Fact is league has a history of players in the last few games of a season going off with high point career games.

Im not the GM and as a fan I can simply root for my guys until otherwise not on the roster.
Is there a way Obi and randle can play together? If so, thats my preference.

So, there is a possibility that the Knicks ran up the value of Barrett, Toppin and IQ and can now make moves to acquire 'stars'. I like the youth movement better because it has more hope and feels more natural, but they probably have the assets to make moves right now.

1) Barrett, Reddish and a Resigned Mitch Robinson (4 years, 60mm) to NOP for Brandon Ingram. With Zion preaching his desire to stay in NOP, it creates a conundrum that both seem to do better with the ball in their hands. I think it is possible we get draft compensation BACK from NOP with this trade as I have Barrett with high value.

Graham/McCollum/Barrett/Williamson/Robinson is a good looking 5 with Reddish possibly growing into that lineup.

2) Fournier, Toppin, IQ and 2 draft picks to Utah for Mitchell.

3) Noel, Walker and 1 draft pick for Myles Turner.

McBride/Rose
Mitchell/Grimes
Ingram/Burks
Randle/Gibson
Turner/Sims

You can fill in the roster with the Bi-Annual, the MLE and Veteran Exceptions. If the heads work together, it would be a pretty solid team. McBride maybe isn't ready to step into the starting 5. But he is close.

Would be an interesting starphuch and would require the starting lineup to split that ball up a bit better than they have historically.
