Given the FA class this year, I think it would be best for the knicks to go one more year before making any big moves. Given that, they should utilize their cap space to try and get some draft capital or young talent by taking on a large one year expiring contract.

Are there any contracts that come to mind? I know I saw a Bledsoe trade floated since his second year is only partially guaranteed. Don’t think I’d be a fan of that since I’d rather get a young PG and pair him with Rose.

Agree though we really desperately need a new starting pg and the most realistic options (Jackson, Dinwiddie, Lowry, Conley) are all going to need significant $$ at a multi-year deal

If we bring back Elf and Rose we aren’t making the playoffs

We keep saving our Cap space for the following off season, and BY the time it comes around the class has dried up to 2nd tier players you have to overpay for.

It’s the right philosophy. We just again became a desirable location again for top tier free agents. Do you really want to go back to the Isiah/Scott Layden days of cap hell with past their prime scrubs getting their nba $50 million nba retirement packages here?

With 50 million in cap space, you have the ability to take on one bad contract (thinking <15 million). Not talking about a 30+ contract. And I’d prefer it be a backup center or backup wing. The idea is that you could try and move up even just a few picks or pick up a pick for next year.

You’d add at least two first round rookies this year, hopefully one gets a lot of minutes and your other guys continue to develop. It’s not just kicking the can down the road for next year's FA class but really making your team more attractive and giving you more ammo if you wanted to go the trade route.

Are there options for backup center or wings?

The knicks have never ever sign a top tier FA under no regime in my life time, NOT in EWINGS 15 YR career, Not under Layden, IT, Walsh, phil, Mills.

It didn't matter if we were a great team, good team, team on the rise, rebuilding, whatever, no one has ever came here.

Then it came down to the knicks are willing to absorb unwanted contracts of productive players like CP3 and Westbrook, that didn't happen.

Walsh thought Lebron, Bosh, or wade was coming here, Phil thought everyone would sign on for the TRIANGLE, Mills and Perry Thought (because we had a black FO) KD, Kyrie, Kawhi and other top FA would come here.

I'm sure Leon and WWW was a little caught off guard when haywood, FVV and CP3 weren't interested last off season.

Sexton is right around the Level Allan Houston and Randle were at when we acquired them, ready to take their game to the next level.

If there's anything this yrs finally showed us, it's that you don't need a roster full of ALL stars to win it all

I'd actually say this year was about passing the torch to the next generation of franchise talent - and Giannis Antetokounmpo at age 26 finally grabbed the mantle. Dude is like Lebron or KD, but built like an effing tank.

Who do we have, or can hope to have, that will be bigger and better than Giannis?

And the second tier of talent is just as fierce - Luka, Trae.

This past year was great, but I see us having a long way to go.

NO has both S Adams and Bledsoe —- along with 10th pick.

Something like a Adams and #10 for Knox & 21 might work.

Maybe select a Moses Moody and Adams replaces Noel - also gives flexibility if Mitch trades are being considered.

Something similar with Bledsoe could work and Bledsoe 2nd year I think is only $5M guarantee but not sure #10’would be as obtainable in Bledsoe deal

So the knicks FO has a loser mentality because they are aggressively going after SEXTON (which im all for)

No, it was about your thought process. When you irrationally put up roadblocks to what you can and want to do for no particular reason, it's why you will continue to fail.

When you always perceived something in a Negative sense, you will always seem closed minded, narrow minded, or in denial, which seems to be how your cominning across.

My thought process AND THE REALITY of it all, is that the KNICKS NEVER signed a TOP DOG FA in 40+ yrs, and until that changes it's safe to say it's a slim to no chance of it happening...If happens now Great, but when you have a 0 for 40 track record..well lets just say optimism is not at a high point.

^^ Knicks signed Amare who played MVP level ball until Carmelo arrived. that seemed pretty top flight to me

Separately, let's not kid ourselves. signing a top dog FA does not happen that often and is a questionable strategy. Here is one of several articles that addresses top FA signings ever or in recent history and several of them were for good players but "top dogs"? -- https://www.sportscasting.com/the-15-biggest-nba-free-agency-signings-in-recent-history/

Even with the now infamous Decision, the Heat won two Championships, the first of which they shouldn't have been in but for the refs swallowing whistles at key times in game 6 against the Celts. really horrible. KD's decision joined an already dominant team. SO where does one find this as some super strategy. It's a mirage for the most part

you're more likely to find franchise altering events through drafting or trades (which in turn require already having assets but getting the right combination). Use FA tactically of course but don't plan around it. Think about it. If you're top dog and already going to make max money why would you want to go anyplace other than a team in serious contention already (and you're ring chasing) or which has lower/no tax

I actually took something different from this year. I saw a lot of teams full of All Stars fail miserably. I also saw teams that were good teams have more players play like all stars. One thing that Bud does so well is his efficiency on offense. He brought in more defensive players and played highly efficient offense. It certainly helps to have Giannis on the floor. But that team is a well coached and well constructed team. They do not have the same level of talent as many other teams in the NBA. But they don't give up eFG in their shot selection and they play tough defense. For me, this finals hammers home the role of defense and eFG in winning games. Honestly, good defense just makes teams take shots outside their best eFG.

You say need more All Stars. I say need more eFG.

If you open up these two shot charts for the Knicks this season. Knicks had the better defense this season. Bucks had the much more efficient offense. It helps to open up both tabs at the same time and flip back and forth to see the differences -- its hard to see by themselves. The difference is mainly the Knicks propensity to take 18 foot jump shots -- but there is a tightness around the Bucks shots in the paint and the bulk of shots from the top of the key.

https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/milwaukee-bucks-shot-chart-this-season

https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/new-york-knicks-shot-chart-this-season

It could be more "all stars" but in my head, this is the difference between 55.6% eFG and 52% eFG. Some of that difference is talent. Some of it is shot selection.

Not expiring but overpaid players who actually could be useful and would come with some type of assets to allow another team to shed their salaries - Tobias Harris and Buddy Hield.

Harris is actually a damn good player, just wildly overpaid against market value.

If we cannot get Sexton for a reasonable price then S. Adams would be perfect for this team. Noel is leaving for more money, he pretty much said that when he used past tense while talking about his time with the Knicks in the latest interview. I have wanted S Adams on this team ever since Thibs became our coach. He would fit like a glove.

Don’t be scared of spending cap space and money. Live a little. Not every contract goes bad. And remember the single most important equalizer with player contracts: the COACH who is coaching that contract.

It’s time to win. Lets spend money on a good or even great player in FA and trade some of the chips for an additionally good or great player. We shouldn’t be starting or giving big minutes to guys like bullock, Rose, Noel and Burke any longer.

Morey would want the largest trade exception possible for Harris, so the Knicks would only have to give up something like the rights to Laberyie just to make the trade legal and absorb Harris into their empty cap space. My guess is the return would be Shake Milton and Isaiah Joe plus draft assets. The 76ers only make this move if they can get Lillard for Simmons and they'd need Maxey and Thybulle to make a legitimate run at a ring. Lillard would also need a handshake deal from someone else to also join up. Technically the 76ers could also ask the Knicks to take in George Hill, then cut him and eat the sub 1.3 million dollar buyout. The draft return would need to be higher though.

If the Thunder are dragged into a deal, they have a couple of high 2nds in this draft that are immensely valuable. If the 76ers can get the Knicks those picks, that's a solid spot to find talent that would go early 20s in any other draft.

On Hield, I think the Kings ask for MRob. I don't think it would cost much. Ranadive has finally figured out he needs to rent his cap space to try to garner more draft assets and just focus on the draft. Trades and FA won't help him.
