When Mitch went down with the hand injury I thought the knicks will slowly decline. Instead of the knicks going down, we saw the emergence of Noel as a defensive force in the paint. I dont know if the Knicks will need both players in the roster but if they find a way to keep both players in the team, thats good for the team's defensive there wont be any letdown throughout the game. But at what cost?

Should the FO focus on getting a reasonable long term deal with Noel(fair for both parties) and look for a trade for Mitch?

I saw an article exploring 3 possible trades for Mitch:

1. Indiana- myles turner for mitch and knox
2. Charlotte- Terry Rozier for mitch, Knox and detroit 2nd rounder
3. Boston- Aaron Nesmith, Bos 2021 1st, bos 2022 2nd for Mitch.

I like both players the knicks have at center. Do these players think of the fit in the system as a reason for their emergence? Just like what happened to Lin, if you're Noel would you think I showed the NBA how good I am and i will test free agency and sign with any team that will offer me the biggest pay and see what happens or will you resign with the knicks at a lower yet reasonable pay and continue your success.

I think the future of Mitch will depend on what Noel will do. Any of the three trades jump out as a good trade?

Turner for Mitch and Knox might be boarding on robbery. Trade number three doesn't do it for me, but trade #2 would be interesting.

As good as mitch is or the projected high ceiling he could reach, Noel has been more than solid in his absence making him a luxury to have in the roster. If the knicks see Thibs as the long term coach ala with the Heat and Spurs then trading mitch could be an option. i think Mitch will fit in any coaching system because of his off the charts athleticism. But if thibs is here to stay, Noel gives what ever Thibs ask of him.

You’re not going to get full value for Mitch coming off an injury probably. No need to rush here.

So Robinson has had a broken hand, then a broken foot, Noel has missed time and is day to day and there is a question about whether the Knicks can hang on to Robinson for less than they'll pay Gibson to come back?

Huh.

The title of the thread.

It seems to imply if Noel re-ups next season there is some question about Robinson's return.

I'm still trying to process what you said. You're really asking if we can have Mitch for less than Taj?! Taj was with us and after that no one asked for him until we called him again. True, after that he was more than useful, but if he stays on the team it will be for a veteran minimum or something a little more. I know there’s really no love for Mitch here lately, but this is really a new level.

I will just repeat that I really love Noel. I also really like that signature right at the beginning when I didn’t think he would have a chance to play that much, and much more when by chance he became a starter and justified it. But it should also be said that the whole team, meanwhile, has understood even better what Thibs is looking for and all the other players are making Noel's job easier.

In contrast, last season Mitch was one of the few on the team to play a good defense and I don’t understand why you don’t realize that a defense with a healthy Mitch would probably be even better by now. So I'm talking about Noel and Mitch. Mentioning Taj’s salary as some sort of benchmark is, as I wrote, really a new level of belittling Mitch.

I'm not asking, he has a team option for $1.8m in 2021-22. The vet minimum for a 10-year vet is $2.5m.

I LOVE Robinson. Knicks only play is to keep him next year, Noel or not.

Im still hoping the knicks keep this roster after the end of this season Noel and Mitch included. I wont be heartbroken if Payton goes and we get an upgrade. All im saying is the way Noel has played well and thrived under Thibs, gives the FO other option. Before knowing how well Noel plays under Thibs alot of us though that one of the top priorities is to keep Mitch on this team long term. Now, the knicks can certainly do that but there are other directions the knicks can take.

I assumed you were talking about a new contract for Mitch. The option for next season is not in dispute. If we so desire, we can have him next season for those $ 1.8M. It's just that it has some consequences. If we take that option, he’s UFA in 2022 and I’ll guess he won’t be too happy to had to play another season for that amount.

If we don’t take the option, he’s RFA this summer and we have complete control and we can match any other team’s offer. But that means his contract could rise significantly this summer.

Some rumors from the team say that our FO tends to take the option and then immediately negotiate a new long-term contract, which in my opinion is more than OK because we will eliminate the offers of other teams that could be much higher than some here think.

Fact is Norlens does not have a very durable history.
Mitch’s feet might be problematic.
Can’t say either are should get locked up.

Exactly. It's like people are forgetting Noel misses a lot of games (this season and throughout his career). And people also forget Noel actually played better at OKC last year and could only get a one year/$5M contract this season. I don't see this as a situation where we have to choose one or the other.

In the end, those Mitch injuries could prove to be luck in an accident because in the end we could have both (him and Noel) for a reasonable price. Add Taj as the third center and I am more than happy with the rotation in that position for next season.

Leaves Mitch with competition and motivation to hold onto his place in the starting lineup.

Leaves us with a super backup and a strong foundation at center to keep playing our brand of basketball, without having to changeup roles or spacing when one of them sits.

I’d rather have a healthy dependable mitch at a high price or a high trade value then a guy with a broken foot. Again, Dr Callahan explain the orthopedist view as optimistic or as a chronic predictable trauma to the foot. There are many bones down there and he had a non contact injury! If he landed on someone that is one thing. But a guy who foot just broke is another. So what is reasonable? As yourself what you don’t know?
Just read a trade proposal here:

https://dailyknicks.com/2021/05/04/ny-knicks-3-mitchell-robinson-offseason-trades-for-ny-to-consider/amp/4/.

Its mitch for Nesmith, Boston’s 2021 1st and a second. some think thats not enough.
Hey, if you can get that I’m good! But how do you value mitch with a broken foot unless you know he gonna be just fine?

Norlens would be fine if we draft and bring on another.
I don’t see any positive to mitch being injured.

Pretty sure it was a statement and question about how to manage both guys in terms of keeping them - or managing their circumstances - on roster. There is no doubt on the options the Knicks have.

Why in the heck would be get rid of Mitch? We have a great C tandem right now with the system we have. Keep both of them.

Hence my reply, Martin. Bringing back Robinson (based on the premise Noel returns) leaves Robinson back with the Knicks at $1.8m, exactly where he should be.

Given their injury histories, their historic PT averages and games, there is clearly a use/need for both of them. There is no roster duplication issue.

And the Knicks don't really save a dime by expelling Robinson. A center drafted with either of the two 1st rounders and/or a vet signing will almost certainly cost more than him.

His '21-22 salary pays '22-23 cap hold dividends.

And he still has enormous upside.

So my point is Robinson should be on the Knicks '21-22 roster regardless of whether Noel returns or not.

Given his injury history and the fact he is a season away from unrestricted free agency, his trade value may not be that high either, but even if it is that's a whole other set of circumstances to evaluate. You trade him ONLY for the value he brings back.

NOT because of Noel in any way, shape, or form.

Nerlens Noels has found his home with the Knicks but where does that leave Mitch?
