Our PG situation is probably the most critical to the development and direction of this team. Trying to cover all the bases here, here are the options i see and preference:

The Draft: Tier 1 Ball, Tier 2 Haliburton and Cole Anthony. This would be an attempt to finally fix the PG position for the long term. Most likely would pair with either a stopgap free agent and/or Frank.

Big Splash: Tier 1 Long term commitment to FVV, Tier 2 trade for Chris Paul.

Stop gap options: Tier 1 Goran Dragic, Tier 2 Teague and Augustin. I see this option if we draft a PG to pair with. Both Teague and Augustin played for Thibs previously.

In House options: Tier 1 Frank, Tier 2 DSjr, Tier 3 Payton. Most unlikely option in my mind, although i can definitely see Frank back in a big reserve role.

What do you feel is the best option? Most likely option?

I would definitely add Hayes in the draft list. Don't think you can draft a young PG and have Frank and DSJr on roster for long.

I know a situation that doesn't work: Having Frank, DSJr and a vet PG that will eat up minutes.

I do see Frank having a big role on a Thibs team, he has got to get 25-30 minutes a game.

DSJr is at his lowest potential trade value point; if he is still on team and you don't play him at a good enough clip, you aren't getting much back. Draft a PG and same situation occurs.

For me, the stop gap options don't help enough and will just take minutes away from other guys, plus you eat up $$$ for other positions.

I am actually OK with a guy like C3P but knowing what the trade would be is obviously key, and the Knicks would be getting back assets in any scenario, and I gotta guess they would be moving DSJr and perhaps drafting one of the young PGs.

I'd maybe add Mike Conley (to the list of options, not saying I'd like us to get him!) as a 1 year stop gap if Utah crashes and burns in Orlando. Maybe they decide he doesn't fit next to D-Mitch and try to shed the salary

I actually think, thibs will consider Frank a SG and not a PG. He likes scoring PGs and actually let go of a passive, defensive PG in rubio for Teague.

His PGs that achieved under him are- rose, Robinson, Teague, agustin.

No lamelo ball he has bad family his father is an idiot causes to much drama needs to go to small market team suns, piston, or hawks. I don't think thibs will like lamelo ball would drive him crazy so for lamelo ball would hate thibs. I think you draft kira lewis or sign fred van fleet, or trade for guy like dennis shroder for stop gap point guard for one year 15 million dollars.

I think I would prefer to draft Anthony Edwards and sign a guy like Dragic if he is into helping develop, and if not Teague. But I think Ball is the clear preference

I posted about Conley - he has a player option for 2021. I tend to think he will opt in - I don't see how he can get $34M for one year, let alone that kind of dough on his next contract.

how can anyone project out what Frank is going to be able to contribute? You can't count on him in any meaningful way. If he produces anything, it's found money.

Maybe if you sign a FVV, you can plug in Frank & DSjr as back ups, and hope one of them can manage that for 10-15 minutes a night.

I would avoid any big money or over the hill PG signings or trades. I do not see FVV, Conley or Paul as starting PGs on a championship-caliber Knicks team when it is ready for contention. So would stay away from them. A stopgap for a couple of years, a Teague or a Dragic at a reasonable price might be okay, but please no long term commitments.

Our best case scenario is to develop two strong scorers on our own: RJ and whoever we draft this year, then maybe look for a trade or a signing of a proven 3rd star. Will take at least 2 years before we get there, maybe longer.

With RJ plus Frank/DSJr we can probably put enough decent ball-handlers on the floor, would be better to go after someone with the best long-distance shooting potential, than a superbly talented ball-handler/passer, but non-shooter.

I am getting to the point of losing faith in Frank, still have some hope for DSJr, think he got a raw deal last year, should have been resting or getting injury treatments, instead of being forced to go onto the floor to prove that we had gotten fair return from the KP trade.

Goran Dragic could help any team in the NBA. I don't see how the Knicks could get him. If he leaves South Beach, I suspect it will be for Dallas. Cuban was the first owner, now there are many, who was willing and did pay crypto under the table to get around the cap issues. I don't see why he wouldn't here.

I'm hearing more rumblings linking Leon Rose to wanting Obi Toppin. Take that for what you will at this point. Some stat heads really like the guy in terms of projection.

Chris Paul looks like the most practical way to use the open cap space. The Knicks could probably get two late 1sts for eating that contract. A complication is because of Paul's role at the bargaining table , he can't feasibly take a buyout of any kind on the last year of that deal. Not unless he's walking with 100 percent of his contract. And I don't see why a team would do that.

Here is a crazy idea. Probably not in the majority. I would rather keep the PG's that we have and focus on SHOOTING! Believe we were 27th in 3pt percentage this year. Keep saying, would rather trade down and get some shooters in the draft. (Bey, Nesmith, Vassell, Bane) Just don't see a top level PG in there this year. I also would not trade for a ridiculous salary burden aka CP3. Think right now we go after the best value players, no matter what position they play and good shooters. Lets face it, we need a lot more than just a good PG.

But shooting needs to come from the PG position. It's asking a lot for non-shooters to become shooters. We need to improve the shooting from that position in particular.

I agree. I want to get shooters. The best shooter every time we pick. If it's not a PG for our first pick then so be it. We need to increase our shooting percentage period.

Wonder if this guy will get a chance at the next level. Westchester G-League guy Lamar Peters.

https://theknickswall.com/nba-delete-8-plan-would-provide-tremendous-benefits-new-york-knicks/

played the entire season with the Westchester Knicks. Peters averaged 17.7 points per game and 7.2 assists per game while shooting 40.4% from beyond the arc

Really decent numbers and was impressed with the tape. If he was more athletic he’d get the nod from me.
Whatever happens the PG spot is so crucial in today’s NBA. Personally I’d ideally like to draft a pg with one of our picks. If we can move Payton and DSJ great, although I have a feeling Thibs could actually like DSJ game ala D Rose CHICAGO days.

Vassell and Nesmith would be awesome additions to our existing roster should we miss on PGs in draft.

Dont have any names to offer. Is Rose going to try to Max out a couple of Stars? We dont really know who the FO is targetting. What kind of timetable they're on. Paul doesnt make sense if he doesnt have a lot of Star power with him.

Right now I dont believe we need anything more than a competent, reliable, PG. Doesnt have to be a highlight reel. Its been a while since we had a PG like that for an entire season. Either they arent reliable enough, or they get hurt.

Frank, DSJr, a draft pick, a backup PG from another team. Reliability, the ability to run an offense, to get everyone involved. Not necessarily a big time scorer, a PG who can get timely buckets during the game. Not necessarily the player you give the ball to, to tske the last shot.

Dont believe we need to hit a home run at PG, if the Knicks are planning to grow talent. Looks like G-League will be getting more of an emphasis, from what Ive read. A good reliable, stop gap PG, can help get a team with recent draft picks, upcoming draft picks on the same page. Give them the space to find their game. Unless we're going all in on Stars, and need a PG with experience on a contender.

My guess is we draft a PG and either also add Chris Paul via trade or pair the rookie with a solid vet like dj augustin or Jeff Teague. Both have played for thibs. Chris Paul would be a mentor and leader for a young team. But only if it’s a salary dump in the okc side. Long term i see us targeting Booker or Donavan Mitchell. But that’s playing the long game. Short term it’s about drafting a PG and building around that player and RJ and Mitch while adding a couple of quality vets that compliment them well.

I dont believe that Paul would want to be traded to the Knicks, unless the plan was to sign more stars, role players, and try to win now.

Paul is still playing at a high level, but I believe winning a ring is a big part of what drives him. Paul doesnt have too many years left as a starter. He was able to succeed in OKC because he was going to a veteran playoff team. Plug and Play. Thats not what would be the deal in NY, if they dont plan on winning now. Dont see Paul wanting to spend the end of his career that way. I see him wanting to win a ring as a starter, not a bench player when he's past his prime.

A good veteran PG like Teague would be fine, if they've bought into the gameplan. Or Frank, DSJr, stepping up. Consistency at the PG postion will pay big dividends in developing talent.
