https://www.talkbasket.net/83887-knicks-have-a-knack-for-getting-star-players-past-their-prime

Came across this article and I couldn’t help but imagine what would have happened if we could have got several of the players mentioned at their peak. Kidd, Baron, Bibby, McGrady...

Is it just fate for us to land CP3?

Apologies I meant no disrespect to CP3 fans ( myself included.) He is a future hall of famer. His stat line are still so impressive.

2019-20 SEASON STATS
PTS
17.7

REB
4.9

AST
6.8

For me at this stage of his career it comes down to economics. Could be an amazing mentor to a rookie coming in?

There is a time and place to add vets past their prime. To me its ok to to add them as a role player on a bonafide playoff caliber talented team.
Jerry Lucas was a fine addition at the of his career.
Rolando Blackman ran out of gas at a really bad time!
Baron Davis/Bibby were good tries to guys that were cooked.
Starphucks to drum up a buzz need not apply.
CP3 at the money he is due I'd pass on unless we are compensated to take that money on.

Matter of economics. Realistically what compensation would you be happy with for this to happen? Is this move worth doing?

I thought Kiki would be the perfect compliment to Patrick. He was a huge disappointment. Same for Rolando.

I thought Tony could still score for us. His defense sucked and I don't believe Reilly was ever a fan. I believe he already waived him once in LA. Should've put him in when Starks was imploding

The obvious issue here is the massive sum of money owed to him on his deal. It would destroy the 20/21 salary cap. CP3 contract is $84 million with a player option for $40+ million which he’d be likely to take. The compensation would have to include multiple expiring contracts and draft picks. Unlikely to fit.

But at some point we’re going to have to try to start winning. So we continue to build a winning team exclusively through the draft? Paul might not be the right GUY now, but at some point we need to take the plunge on a veteran star player.

Spent vs. disappointed?

Rice was here just one season. Gave us 75 games. He had been in decline after a bad injury. He was cap fodder for 38 year old Ewing trade.
Harper, williams, cummings, and mutumbo at their advanced ages was "spent" but what was the expectation? What did knicks pay for and did they get moneys worth?
Vin Baker was poster player for "Spent". 4 time all star was a mess by age 30 and the object of Dolans better side empathetic to his drinking issues and tried to resuscitate his career at age 32.

I looked up Mutumbo who I was a 10 time all star! His last at age 35. His next season in NJ was just 23 games, he played the next year with us for just one season logging 65 games and was by then playing just 23 min a game.

I’m surprised nobody mention Larry Johnson. He played a few years with us and had some great moments but he wasn’t half the player he used to be by the time he arrived.

True. When we traded Mase he was a powderkeg potential of trouble. Mase went on to have a better career than I thought he would at the time. Larry Johnson had a contract charlotte really could not afford and his back issues were problematic. He was a big name star and your right, he was a shell of his former self. Its why we got him for just Mase, but actually Larry was not as good.

True, but unlike most of the players on this list, he figured out a way to make himself useful- was pivotal in terms of leadership in the 1999 run.

How about coaches/GMs who were spent when we got them:

Donnie Walsh
Phil Jackson (think he got unfairly treated and was right about a fair few things)
Lenny Wilkins
Larry Brown (became unhinged)

I actually give Larry credit for being as effective as he was for us. He became a really good post defender and he did hit those big shots. The problem was that I think he even confessed that he started showing up to camp out of shape. I think that f’ed him over long term. Maybe he could have extended his career more.

Loved him as a Knick but he wasn’t anywhere near his superstar potential.
