Why is the team struggling so much with Kanter on the floor?

I like the guy. I like his offensive moves and rebounding. But it's hard to ignore his -12.4 on/off differential (the worst among our regular players). It's the 2nd to last column here: http://www.82games.com/1718/1718NYK.HTM

What is your take on this? I figure you could have any of these reactions:
-14 games is too small a sample. It's random fluctuation.
-It's just because he's playing a lot with Lee, who also has a bad +/-. Still Kanter's is a little worse.
-His poor defense is hurting the team. Probably true but our offensive rating is a little worse with him on the court too.
-He doesn't pair well with KP.
-On/off +/- is a silly, pointless stat.

I hope the Knicks are at least aware of this and trying to figure it out.

It's his defense. It's improved this year but it's still really bad.

Bonn is there a way to focus these numbers when paired with KP?

I ask because he seems to have synergy with KP on both ends, e.g., Enes doesn't have to pretend to be a rim protector

Wondering if his numbers are materially different when he's the big man on the court, and not 2d option

regardless it is an enigma as is his defense; he strikes me as intelligent (at least judged by conversation); one would think he can learn whatever it is they're trying to get him to do; his low post moves suggest he should be ok with whatever footwork he needs on defense

From what I’ve seen it’s mostly about Jack! We can’t defend the perimeter long enough with Jack and Kanter because neither guy moves enough to help stick with 3 Point shooters. Teams light us up with both of them out there! We do OK with guarding the paint but teams just KILL us from 3!

This team needs lineups that can move and defend for a full 24 seconds! Now with Frank and a smaller, more mobile Big the D can make more rotations and take away more open 3’s. That’s what it looks like to me.

+/- is a terrible stat that somehow needs to be refined. Example Knicks- Clev. Late in the game Clev's offense is spread out, Frank guarding Wade. Frank over playing Wade to his right too much, frank turns his head , Wade drives by for a layup and is fouled by the help defender( 3 pt play) ( don't remember who was the help defender). The only persons that should have gotten a -3 on that play were Frankie and the help defender. This happens on almost every play where defenders are playing good defense, doing what they are supposed to do and because someone had a breakdown or played poor defense every defender gets a negative score. Fastbreaks where someone let his man get down court ,again everyone gets a negative score. Same with these open 3's. If someone is giving his man too much space and can't close out in time everyone on the court gets a negatve 3. It is not an accurate stat.
fishmike 9/27/2024 11:00 PM Ug I hate this. The idea of Towns is great until you see what a pussy he is. Jules is a dog. DD was a flamethrower locked up cheap for 3 more years. First Leon move I hate

I totally agree. His +- should go up once Frank starts. Jack is really getting exposed in the perimeter. As much as I love his offensive contributions he is a defensive liability. I think its time to start Frank and activate Baker. I know a lot here doesn't like Baker but I am one of the few that sees his defensive tenacity as an asset.

It's not the only stat I'd look at by any means. Still, when your +/- is worse than all your teammates, can you really just say it's the teammates' mistakes that are bringing your # down?

Well, hopefully that's what happens rather than Frank's #s going down once he plays with Kanter! I do agree Frank is our best PG and would like to see him get the bulk of the minutes.

Its not Kanters fault. Kanter shouldve played more against Cleveland. When we were up +20 if we slowed the game down and took it into the post repeatedly with KIanter--were scoring more points and moving the clock. Hes also shown to be a passer. I see what Jeff is doing he uses a defensive line up that has worked at times with KO Frank etc.. bt bottom line is +- is highly subjective.

I think it's the "d" and small sample size. To RedDog's point, you need a big sample size for the kind of stuff he's talking about to even out (your teammates' screw ups that have nothing to do with you getting balanced by their good plays that have nothing to do with. you). Still, to the eyeball test, Enis is still just a terrible PNR defender. He usually gets caught in-between, neither stopping the ball nor staying on his man. And when he does switch, he can't stick with the ball handler. If I'm coaching against him, I'm running PNR all night long. All that said, it's hard not to be a Kanter fan. Guy's got tons of heart and is a top 5 NBA post player. Still a useful piece, regardless of +/-.

Yeah, at this point I'd say: 1) It's something to keep our eyes on and 2) we should think about whether there are better ways to use him. I'm not saying we need to get rid of him now.

After the "New Oak" shine wears off and all is said and done, we progress into larger samples and the analytics start to evolve and tell a story.
Our storyline needs to bring Noah on the court and see what he can bring. It will determine his value if any trade is to materialize.
The free agency money is tight this summer and Enes might not find big long term money waiting for him.
I only saw the 4th qtr last night, he was not on the court.

Kanter’s PER is 25. That’s way above average. We know he can score and rebound but guarding the PnR is going to challenge any tradional sized big especially when they are switching onto some of the best guards in the league.

Who is Noah taking minutes from though? Kanter and KOQ are playing well and don't deserve to lose minutes to a guy who has been washed up for 3 years.

Here are some analytics--if we played Enes more against Clev and Detroit wed be 10-4. Enes provides ez baskets. Some games we wont match up 4-5 because we go to big--but thats up to JH to find the solution--perhaps using KP on the stretch 4.

Did you read this off your last piece of toilet paper? What exactly was Enes going to do against Kyle "Reggie" Korver? Do the inbounds faster after the mofo hit his 10th 3 in the 4th quarter? We are the 8th worst team in the league at defending the 3. Effing Utah hit damn near 50% from 3 last night...

Because he have to run from basket to basket, i have seen a lot of times when we miss a shot Kanter is the last one back in defense, a lot of times it is too late

REAL plus-minus http://www.espn.com/nba/statistics/rpm

Guess who is 2nd in the league for players playing over 30min per game? Our old friend Melo.
I bet he wasnt that good last yr on the Knicks. Just shows how its not a meaningful stat.

I’m much more in favor of On Court/Off Court.

http://www.fantasylabs.com/nba/on-off/

Just looking at Net Ratings it’s clear who should be playing more minutes! Limiting Kanter’s minutes is probably the right call. IMO when you mix Jack, Kanter and CLee it’s not our best combination.

Knicks have been closing out the 4th with different lineups, but that's been where they have been best. I think if Kanter played more with Frank instead of Jack it could be different.

Why do we give up so many 3 pointers the first 3 quarters?

Why is the team struggling so much with Kanter on the floor?
