Thats what I would do, they can go after Hayward in FA. I see no reason to force the issue if im Boston you can be very competitive and build a core that peaks when Lebron starts to decline.
On a side note why would Boston trade any picks for Melo? He isnt a player thats in demand. We arent getting anything for melo thanks to the no trade clause. We will be lucky to get a middling first round pick. There isnt many teams that can absorb that salary, thats the problem. We might get a good asset back from the Lakers but we would have to take a horrendous contracts like Deng and Mozgov. If we do a deal with the CLippers we have to get unprotected picks like 4 years from now

It would more likely be #10 & Crowder for Melo and they keep #5.
Then again at #5 & #10 they can land Tatum as a go to scorer and Marrkkanen. Probably even get WCS out of them.
