raven (in other word, me), the French Knicks fan from Paris will soon make his first trip to visit New York City !!! (Martin, Andrew, thanks in advance for not burying my post in a forgotten place !)

Guys, I’ve been in the US a couple off times for business or holidays, but now I’ll soon have my first contact with that city I’ve been strangely so close through the Knicks over the past 12 years !

I’m so excited to come and see it with my own eyes, feel what you feel everyday, I hardly can keep my self-control in front of my computer.

Question is, I read some guides, like lonely planet, but I’d like to get your insight on what my girlfriend and I should see, do... I don’t know, just getting advices and tricks from you guys that know the city, just getting your feelings instead of just paragraphs in a book for tourist (though I’ll be one ), and get a shot to see what is for you the true heart and soul of that city.

Since you've never been, then there's a list of required sites you must see-- All your friends at home will find it strange that you've been to new york without seeing them.

Ground Zero
Empire State Building
Statue of Liberty

Go on a bus tour http://www.graylinenewyork.com/ and you'll be able to cover most everything.

But if you really want to enjoy New York (nitelife, vice) then you'll have to be a little more savvy...

Depending on what you want to do you have a couple options. If you want to do the traditional sights like the Empire State building, statue of Liberty, museums, etc. this is pretty easy to find information on. Depending on how long your here its just as much fun to pick a neighborhood and just kind of wander. Make sure you have your walking shoes. Little Italy (food) , Soho (women), the village (music/shopping), Chinatown (food/fun). Most of Manhatten is very safe so you dont have to worry to much about getting stuck in a bad neighborhood.

Regardless of what you decide have a blast... I will try to get you more info when you have a better idea what your plan is. Also I work for SocGen so I can ask some of the Frenchies around here :)

As we gonna stay 5 to 6 days, we'll make sure to mix our activities.

We mon't miss some of the great museums, monuments and parks that are in NYC, but at the same time, we'll wander a lot, as what we prefer above all when we're abroad is walking down the streets, you know, just seeing people doing their stuffs. We're not of the kind of super tourists, that go from monument to monument with a "to do" list.

Just think about what you're used to show to your friends, relatives that come and visit you in NYC. Do you only show them the statue of liberty, or do you have places that you think would make them understand what the life in NYC truly is ?

I'm truly open to every single advice. Thanks again in advance.

first thing you should buy since you'll be here for about a week is a weekly unlimited metrocard. you know about the subways and buses. you'll be using them ALOT and for $21/person, you buy a metrocard that give you unlimited usage for the week. you can take all the trains and buses you like. much much cheaper than a cab.

secondly, if you want a nice tour of the manhattan skyline and bridges, you can take the circle line. it's a tour ship that sails all around manhattan (great for taking photos).

ny is awesome and like fish said, make sure you have some comfortable walking sneakers b/c you'll be doing alot of that.

post a note again closer to the 4th so we can give you some more info.

Take your girlfriend on a carriage ride of central park (shell love it)Go see a broadway show,go to the legendary basketball court on 4th street and 6th avenue on the weekend and see some real streetball.Take a walk up Park avenue,fifth avenue, a guided walking tour of Harlem(yes its safe) and have lunch at the world famous Sylvias soul food at 328 lennox avenue(even Bill Clinton eats there)catch some jazz in the village.Well thats some of it.Have a great time!!!!!

Sure, it was the 92-93 season, all my friends were bulls fans and I just started to play ball by myself.

We saw a game in regular season, bulls vs knicks, and man, just watching less talented guys laying it all on the court, I thought this is the team I want to support. Then I discovered starks, his d and his fire temper on the court. He quickly became my favorite player at that time.

From then I never stopped to watch and support the knicks. Weird, but NYC kind of became my second place, though I never had a chance to put a foot on its ground. I was destroyed when we lost in '94, watching all the games during the night, going to bed at 5 in the morning though I was working at that time. I was in Atlanta for a couple of weeks when we lost against the Heat cause of the fight between our two teams. Watched during the night again our hopeless fight against the spurs.

As I said, since the very first time i saw them, I never stop being a knick fan. Internet changed my life from that particular point of view, as nobody, i really mean NOBODY, liked the knicks where i lived. I never personally met a fan of them, and have always been critized for that but i don't care. Until now, where I know that I'll be able to share my feelings, win or lose, good or bad, with other knicks fans.

Soon I'll get a look to see that city for the first time , the MSG, man, I guess I'll have some tears in the eyes. That will be a great trip for me. Means a lot more than any other trip I've already done.

pre-requisite places you might want to visit:

Statue of Liberty
Empire State Building
Central Park (the carriage ride idea is perfect)
Little Italy
Chinatown
South Street Seaport
Rockefeller Center
Times Square
Macy's & Herald Square (MSG is just 2 block away)
East Village, SoHo, St. Mark's square (small stores)
uptown Madison Ave. stores (more upscale shopping)

(not much to see at Ground Zero nowadays, unless you just want to tell your friends you've been there)

other than that, depending on what your interests are:
Arts = Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Gugenheim Museum, The Cloisters

History = Museum of Natural History, Intrepid Air & Space Museum

Theater = Broadway shows

Nature = Bronx Zoo, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

Nightlife = too many to list...you can easily find some great night spots through an internet search depending on what type of music & scene you're looking for

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Times Square, and the legendary Yankee Stadium. (Whether your a baseball fan, or Yankee fan for that matter, or not, it's a must see place. Hey Raven, if you like pizza, there is a place in the city called V&Ts, right around the corner of West 111th street and Amsterdam. I haven't had it in ages, but the last time I had it, I considered it the greatest pizza in the world. Ohh, and coincidentally, right across the street from there is the Cathedral of St. John, the Divine, which is the worlds largest Gothic cathedral. I believe it's STILL, in contstruction, but it's a beautiful place, inside and out. Inside is made of mostly marble, which is beautiful. If you take a walk outside on the property, though, keep a lookout for some peacocks. They have them roaming free at that place. It's cool.

Wow man thats awsome the passion you have for the Knicks is what it is probably for all of us, I'm glad your going to NYC you'll love it and i'm sure you'll get goosebumps when you see the Garden...I left like 10 years ago and live down in Miami, but the love for the Knicks is just stronger here cause of all my Heat fan buddies and all those great playoff games I went to in the late 90's, well enjoy New york man

I forgot one,the Carnegie Deli is worth a trip they have amazing sandwiches if you can finish them.A favorite for tourists and locals alike....

Since I am 23 and have been a student almost all my life except the last 2 years I have used Greyhound to travel a lot! Greyhound tickets online are really cheap only if you have a student advantage pass or if you find a coupon online. Their prices are pretty competitive even at the counter.

There is a Grey Hound counter at the Port Authority on 8th Ave as soon as you walk in on the right. They have a pretty good schedule and price list at http://www.greyhound.com which can be a little helpful to check before you leave.

I wish you were here during the season so we could get a group of 5 or 6 posters and root for THE NEW YORK KNICKS at a real game I hope everything goes well on your trip man.
