The nets are forced to build modestly now. Something they should have did from the beginning.

I said before I think Dion Waiters is a guy in RFA who would not be matched. Nets could go after him... but that'd be... not as good as Crabbe and Johnson.

I figured they might get one of the two...probably Crabbe. With Wade going to Chicago, I figured that Johnson would stay with the Heat...did not think Portland would match.

Wow. Why did the blazers give that deal to turner if they are keeping Crabbe and McCollum? Both teams may regret matching these deals. It will be interesting to see if this impacts Marks ability to do deals with teams. Poison pill deals were only used twice before, once with a very cap conscious team and the other time where a team would pay a tremendous salary cap bill.

Waiters might be a better risk on a cheaper deal. He makes a lot if sense for them.

Well done to those who said we should take a gamble on Crabbe! We would now have lucked out on free agency and have no starting SG.

how were these poison pill deals? This is the money guys are getting.

I believe Lin's contract was a poison pill because the third year jumped tremendously and the accounting for the team that matched (i.e., the way the money counted over the years) was different than the team making the contract offer.

The Nets gambled- kudos to them. I don't think they were looking at those moves as be all end all.

We've gambled too by acquiring key parts that are older or have injury issues.

We could end up losing- but we won't know for a year or two.

http://basketball.about.com/od/nba-cba-glossary/g/Poison-Pill-Contract.htm

"The Nets have reportedly offered Johnson a 4-year, $50 "poison pill" contract, in that the last two years of the contract could be worth close to $40 million for Johnson"

Look at that jump = poison pill.

With Crabbe I couldn't find the specifics, just:
"The Brooklyn Nets have signed Portland Trail Blazers restricted free agent Allen Crabbe to a four-year, $75 million offer sheet, according to sources.

The contract is guaranteed and it could reach up to $83 million in bonuses. It also includes a player option for the fourth year. The Trail Blazers have three days to match the offer."

The structure is different but $$$ are much less that Lin.
The cap is much bigger too zo.
The point is if team wants the player poison pills are not helping to get him out.
It was unnecessary to spend so much on Lin... Knicks will never much any contract.

its funny... we talked about a lockout and the crazy money FAs are getting. If anything should change its how RFAs work. It seems year after year that RFAs cause problems. Everyone knows the only way to get them is to grossly overpay. Its rare that teams don't match for good players, even if its just to trade them later (I think Orl did this with Tobias?). What DOES happen is every decent player coming off a rookie contract gets a stupid offer from another team causing a crop of new young players to have terrible contracts.

I am all for giving the hometown team the best chance to resign their players. but this part of the system doesn't work

I get Heat matching Johnson in the aftermath of Wade bolting, but Crabbe back to Portland makes little sense.

I don't think Crabbe was a poison pill. If they wanted him badly, they should have offered him the max. They have the money and need a splash. Otherwise, why even bother offering a contract that seems to be market value for SGs this summer?

Exactly, Portland made it known that they were matching any offer for Crabbe.
