After all the historical angst on this board about not trading #1 picks . . .
what good is the 2017 #1 pick now (?)

If Knicks are top 4 in the East next year . . . that's a #22 overall player.

Wouldn't it have been better to trade that to the Bulls for Rose . . .
instead of stabbing lottery pick Robin Lopez in the back (?)

Could not have traded the pick...not allowed to trade away two in a row.

Also it is supposedly a very deep draft...we might get a decent player.

Lopez is on his fifth team. He has been traded before.

Not quite.

Teams are not allowed to trade away 1st rounders in consecutive UPCOMING drafts.

The second the 2016 draft was completed, they become eligible to trade their 2017 pick, because they have their 2018 pick.

If the KNicks has their eye on Noah all the time, then what you propose would have been problematic under the cap. They wouldn't have had room to upgrade SG.

Let's see how the team does before assuming the pick will be a low one.

That's what we said when we made the Bargnani trade. You see how that worked out.

No more trading picks. How many times has San Antonio picked at the bottom of the draft? How many times have they had a great prospect fall to them?

Don't underestimate draft picks. That's what created the nightmarish period of "lets sweeten the deal by adding a draft pick." No more!

That is the great thing about the trade. It gives us insurance in case Rose or anyone else has a serious injury. We win either way. Either have a good exciting team or else high draft pick. NO WAY do you trade that pick. Nonsense.

fishmike 9/27/2024 11:00 PM Ug I hate this. The idea of Towns is great until you see what a pussy he is. Jules is a dog. DD was a flamethrower locked up cheap for 3 more years. First Leon move I hate

Have you seen how much money mediocre players are getting, why would you trade away a possible rotation player for next to nothing. Getting controlled players on cheap contracts with long term control is not something teams should give away when backups make 12 million a year

Keeping ones picks is like insurance. If things don't work out, you leverage the upside by having a good pick.
When things are going good, a team can afford to take on a project pick and either let him incubate in europe, or develop him domestically.
"Upside potential". Tiago Splitter, Manu Ginobli, Tony Parker......etc. Lots of very good players go lower.
Use them to replace others. Rookies are easy on the cap as well.

More than ever this is why. Just wait and see what kind of deals get tossed out next year - Noah becomes a $100m player - Courtney Lee a $80m player.

Next years draft is going to be loaded, you will have 1st rounders in this years draft going as a mid 2nd round puck in next years. It would be dumb trade our pick. Also, Spurs managed to get Murray deep in the first round this year, anything can happen.

Finally bringing Noah into the franchise should be a gut wrenching reminder not to trade picks under the assumption "well, we'll be good anyways".

Our starting C and PG have injury concerns as it is - let's not take down the safety net already.

We should go into a Baseball mentality:

"Draft picks can't be traded."

We should repeat that phrase when we wake up, before every meal and before going to sleep.

Thanks

This is where we need to be smart and find that player who can add depth. He can be a rotation player sooner rather than later. He can hopefully be the eventual replacement 4 years or so down the road at SG, Center, etc. That player will be in there wherever we draft and we need to find him. That is how we need to draft moving forward. Our depth depends on our ability to find gems later in the draft each year.

Uh, for one thing - we haven't played the season yet. We don't know what the pick will be.

For another thing - you can get a pretty good player with pick 22 and on.

Kyle Lowry pick 24 2006 says hi!

Serge Ibaka pick 24 says hello, don't blame the Durant thing on me

Jimmy Butler pick 30 2011 say hellooooooo

Hassan Whiteside pick 33 says hey

Draymond Green pick 35 says shalom

Taj Gibson pick 26 says hey there

Courtney Lee pick 22 says hi, also I'm a Knick now

Bobby Portis pick 22 2015 says hi!

Solomon Hill pick 23 2013 says hi!

The Plumlee brothers say hi!

Kenneth Faried pick 22 2011 says hi

I mean... do I really have to go on?

In a deep draft, you always have guys dropping. We will get a nice player if we do our homework and keep the picks.
