Lakers are just idiots. Even by the old cap he's still getting 10 per which is high for a 29 yr old slowing down with injuries. These contracts are pretty crazy though.

this is supply and demand - it's the inverse of digital advertising and rates: finite ad budget, unlimited inventory.

Here, we have limited players/talent roster spots and everyone has a ton of money.

Makes Robin Lopez's contract look much better and crazy that we got so little for it.

We could have made a killer deal trading it now, after FA than when we did.

You just don't understand the cap floor. Every team had to spend that money due to the 30% cask increase so all the max contacts are actually good deals. At least that's what the tip of a safety pin told me

just cause there is a floor doesn't mean you toss crazy money at hurt/unproven players. And if you don't hit the floor, like Philly had for the last season or two, you just take the difference from where you are and the floor and you divide that among the players on your squad. No contract to fuss with. And you still have room to take on a contract and draft pick from a team that needs to make room.

Never been the best player on his own team. Might be #3 behind Gasol and Randolph

Feels like stock mkt before the crash. Everything is priced to perfection and then some

People always accused the Knicks of bidding against themselves. Was there really another team out there willing to give Conley $30m per year?

You think they would've gone that high for Conley? I don't know but today proves anything is possible.

The owners collectively are throwing around the GNP of a medium sized country. Maybe one fortuitious owner will sign Greece and Detroit to get them out of their financial difficulties.

Seriously though the size of these deals is really hard to wrap my head around. That Conley deal is freaking insane.

No, they aren't.

The teams throwing the money around have cap room, which means they're basically spending the money the CBA requires them to spend.

The players were REQUIRED to get a HUGE windfall of the new TV revenue. Owners HAVE to pay it to them one way or another.

People just weren't prepared for how much the players were going to get and are reacting how it's being divided up.

In other words, the size of the pie was predetermined by the CBA. All we're seeing right now is how the pie is being divided up.

Problem with you example is Philly was trying to be bad on purpose. They had incentive NOT to spend.

Now they're not even doing that anymore.

All teams WANT to get better. And the cap is only going up more.

Okay, so a team sits out the year and just pays even crappier players MORE money but preserve their cap space. To what end?

REALLY good free agents who can move the needle are never going to exist.

If their purpose is to take on a contract from another team, then the team that shed the contract is going to go spend it on hurt/unproven players. Action-reaction.

There is NO scenario in which ALL 30 teams sit out the market and only sign conservative contracts and try not to take talent from one another so they have more of it on their team.

That's what a competitive market is.
