Hornacek is a nice surprise for our new coach. Completely out of left field. It is reported by Jeff Van Gundy that he will not need to run the triangle. I don't doubt he will have bits and pieces of it, but i think it's clear he won't be as strict with it as Rambis would. No doubt Melo is happy about this. Seems like Phil found a real compromise coach that didn't favor any one agenda. But i felt this warranted its own thread because this really feels like Phil is easing his way out of NY with a move like this. I wouldn't be surprised if we see his departure sometime this summer, or more likely, next summer. He will have left us with Porzingis and Hornacek as the faces of this franchise, and join Jeanie and his son Luke in LA. Am i crazy, or does this seem like the first step of Phil strategically planning his departure?

It's too much of a reach to draw any conclusion about Phils future from this hire. Can this be possible scenario? Absolutely. But there's no way to infer one from the other.

I disagree. I think unlike what was being reported, Phil took a very thoughtful and thorough approach to find someone who would be 'simpatico' with him. We also learned that the Knicks are holding a free agent mini camp in June. Also, Hornacek was supposed to be a guy Kerr wanted as his lead assistant. I don't see it and Phil has said he is in it for the long haul. The only thing that is clear is that no one in the media had a clue what Phil was doing and all of the assumptions being made were just that and were not right. Also, maybe Phil got a feel for Rambis's relationship with the young players when he held his triangle seminar.

As long as he doesn't max out Batum or Conley and doesn't trade our 2017 pick for an over the hill vet before the door hits his ass on the way out, I'm cool.

NO one had a clue what Phil was doing because everything he said was opposite of this hire. He made it clear he was going to run the triangle and criticized Fisher for running it half-assed. There was clearly a change of heart in the past couple of weeks. I thought Phil was too stubborn (as most greats are) to change his focus. Maybe he just felt like there was no one left other than Rambis to run the triangle properly, and Rambis wasn't the right coach. I'm also really surprised that Brian Shaw didn't come up as a candidate at all. He was probably Phil's 2nd choice to Kerr originally and would have been hired if he wasn't under contract with Denver. I am not complaining at all, I think Hornacek is going to be great, and is a good choice for a Porzingis-led team, but this is just so bizarre.

No. No one had a clue that he wasn't on vacation and that he was actually working. Just Sunday one of the reporters wrote a crazy article speculating on what Phil was doing on his 'vacation'. Blatt and Vogel aren't from the triangle tree. Four guys were interviewed. PHil must have realized that Rambis wasn't the guy. Whether it was based on the exit meetings, his triangle seminar with Kurt, or some other factors he changed things up.

I don't think it necessarily is. I think it may be a sign he is deviating from his perceived "Triangle of bust" philosophy. I do think he did some soul searching on that Montana trip aka his self-proclaimed "Curly moment".

One thing I like about Hornacek is that he's a relatively young coach that has the potential to stay here and grow with the team even after Phil moves on. It'd be nice to be one of those teams that has the same coach for a while, instead of needing a new one every other year. Time will tell how it all works out.

I will be VERY VERY VERY curious to hear what Phil says about Hornacek in the press conference. And about the Triangle.

maybe phil is actually thinking that Hornck will make NY much more attractive to FA's. He has a great rep among players and around the league in general.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

How many times has it been speculated and guessed that Phil is about to leave?

And what type of inside info would JVG have about what is going to be run in NY? Shouldn't he have been tied up in Houston doing interviews?

I think Phil is very happy doing what he's doing. Things are just about the get fun, so why would he be wanting to leave. I just don't understand people thinking this way at all.

Media had no CLUE what Phil was really thinking. He doesn't talk to them and he pretty much keeps things to himself unless he tells Charlie Rosen. People should just stop trying to pigeonhole him into a box. Phil is a different animal.

I don't think we really know what the plan is gonna be. Maybe he felt one way at the start of the process and changed his mind midway thru. Maybe he is hoping Jeff will mix in Triangle with his pace and space style. Who knows? Just have to wait and see what they say.

Blatt would have made more sense if the goal was to ease his way out, due to Blatts relationship with Mills (who will take over from Phil)

I don't really think the money is that big to Phil. He has a GREAT JOB! He's living the fantasy of being in complete control of an NBA Franchise and creating his perfect vision of what a basketball team should be. What can top this at his age? It's a real challenge which I'm sure he's enjoying.

Lakers co-owner Jeanie Buss was our guest, in studio, on ESPN radio this morning. I asked if her fiancé, and Knicks president, Phil Jackson would ever join her back in LA.

"No," Buss said, "To visit, yes..but in terms of basketball, he's committed to New York for many years. He's building something there. He has a mission, he's on that journey to get the team back to where he believes it can be and it will be. He's a former Knick...he loves New York, he loves the fans, he wants to make them proud. In terms of the Lakers, we have a front office. They're putting together a team...they have a vision. I'm excited to see what the future holds for us. So, to answer your question....no, there's no plans for Phil to come back here."

So ESPN is a credible source when they say Phil doesn't want to leave, but making stuff up when they say Phil wanted Rambis to coach. Noted!

It is an interview with his fiance who also owns the Lakers. There is a name and a quote attributed to someone. I think you can listen to the interview if you have the espn radio app.
