While the two did speak, it was not an interview.

"I talked to Phil, but I always talk to Phil. He's a mentor of mine," Walton told this newspaper. "There was no job interview whatsoever. It was just a conversation, which is not that rare for Phil and I to have."

That backs up what Kerr said in his pregame news conference.

"Nobody from New York has interviewed Luke," Kerr said. "That has not happened. Luke and Phil have had contact, just like Phil and I have had contact. But not anything to do with the job -- that would be tampering."

"It's important to note that Phil has not reached out to Luke about the job," Kerr said. "That's false. Friendships sometimes dictate conversation and there was some of that, but nothing to do with the job."

And if it comes to it, Kerr said he won't do anything to keep Walton from pursuing a job.

"He will always have permission," Kerr said. "We will never hold anybody back from interviewing for a position they're interested in, but the timing has to be right and Luke's kind of busy right now."

"Honestly, my mindset is mainly with these playoffs that we're in right now," Walton said. "I know the way this works you can't just tell everybody I'm not going to interview anywhere until the end of the playoffs, because most coaches have hired by then. So I'm very comfortable and I love where I'm at right now. I love coming to work every day.

"I also do want to be a head coach some day, whether that's next year or the year after that. I'm going to pursue those opportunities. But knowing while I'm doing that, that I love my job here. So I'm not going to rush off into anything else."

Thanks for posting this. It's not scandalous enough for some folks so I suspect they won't have much to say.

i dont think fans want scandals...they want to win. The past 16 years have really been tough on our fans so its tough to blame fans for being a little skeptical

The Daily News never said there was a job interview. It just said that Walton made it clear he wasn't interested in the job. Have you guys never done that? Someone sort of half offers you an opportunity to gauge your interest and you say not interested? This is the way the world works.

Walton wasn't interested enough in the job to even interview.

very true. Its gonna be tough because most coaches want to have freedom and with the triangle being a requirement im afraid we wont get a top candidate

Post did:

Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton already has interviewed with several teams about their head-coaching vacancies, including the Knicks and Nets, according to multiple NBA sources.

This is what Daily News put out, I guess it's nuanced in a different way:

According to sources, Jackson reached out to the Golden State assistant in a phone conversation recently, following through on his pledge to only speak to those in his circle – or is it triangle? – about their interest in coaching the Knicks. However, the Daily News learned that Walton told his former Lakers coach he wasn’t currently interested in the job.

Right. That to me is not an interview. That to me is Phil saying in a phone conversation "would you be interested in talking about this coaching opening I have?" and Walton saying "not at this time." Not an interview, so plausible deniability on all sides.

Sounds like ESPN is confirming that Walton and Phil discussed the Knicks opening informally.

Golden State Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton has informally spoken to Jackson about the Knicks' vacancy recently, sources say.

After the conversation, Jackson told people within the Knicks organization that he believed Walton would stay with the Warriors, a source told ESPN's Chris Broussard. Jackson intimated on Thursday that he plans to reach out to several candidates before making a decision.

So you say that the Daily News never said anyone actually interviewed Luke and then Martin shows you where the Daily News did say that Luke has already interviewed with multiple teams and then you say right but i don't consider that an interview. Hahahaha The Daily DID say that Luke has had interviews and they were wrong.

they have been making up stuff for years... this is nothing new. In the 90s I used to grab the Post, the DailyNews and any other paper that had a Knick article. I would read them between classes or at lunch (pre internet). Every time a team came into town there would be some rumor about some player. None of this jazz came true. I learned pretty quickly the NY media is just trash. Unless there is a player/coach direct interview, anything with a "source" was complete and utter BS.

There are stories all over the internet saying Walton has talked to at least two teams, however formally. The Daily News didn't say "interview" they said "spoke with".

Kerr has told the Warriors beat reporters Walton talked to teams but they weren't official interviews. Sure sounds like the original story was right to me.

Try watching the show Loud Mouths. Oh my goodness that show and C.Carlin are the absolute worst about taking any small thing about any New York sports team and twisting it wildly into something it's not.

im not sure why people listen to anything that is said in the media. whether it happened or didn't happen, who cares. soon enough, the knicks will hire someone to be their coach, there will be a press conference and then we'll know it's official. it seems like a lot of people are going to great lengths to say no interview occurred, even kerr. so why get all wrapped in this stuff? guys like isola are trying to sell papers.

not for nothing but unless it's wojo reporting something, i pay absolutely no attnetion to it and i don't believe it for a second.

Notice that the people who are so quick to refute the article about Phil talking to Walton and say the media are idiots... are using a media article as their proof of this.

We know Phil tampers. He was fined for it twice already - for talking to Fisher in 2014 and for talking about D'Angelo Russell in 2015.

Kerr, if you read between the lines, basically acknowledged that Walton talked to Phil and he's okay with it. But he asked him to wait til the playoffs were over, or at least til they were on a series break.

There's zero doubt in my mind Phil talked to Walton about the Knicks job - there are ways of conveying information in a "friendly conversation" other than explicitly saying "I would like to interview you for this job."

I love that people think the media is making this up.

What exactly is so hard to believe about ANY of this? Walton is clearly the top remaining guy Phil has that could coach the Triangle. Is it really so hard to believe he'd test the waters to see if Walton was interested in the gig?

This isn't made up media non-sense... it's common sense.
