I think you're right--I think this has something to do with keeping the spot open but for the life of me, I don't understand it. In case of what, Phil?!? We need backcourt help!! We're losing games!!! In case of injury? To who, someone in the frontcourt? There's good depth there--Seraphin, KOQ who's out of the rotation, so is Lou Amundson. You could also cut Amundson and replace him with a Westchester big--an upgrade (Bachynski, Atkins), or another promising DL big...Go get some guard help. Much more important than keeping the roster spot open indefinitely in case of injury, in case we make a 1 for 2 trade and bring back an extra player, etc.. Deal with those situations if & when they occur. In the meantime, make use of the spot and go get a guard who can make plays and help us win games! In fact, open up a 2nd spot and go get me 2 guards!!
Perfect plan to give us what I think we need -- open spot goes to Russ Smith. Waive Sasha and replace him with a better caliber 2G (Elliot Williams, Terrico White, Sean Kilpatrick, Darington Hobson, etc.). There's your backcourt upgrade right there.. If an injury occurs in the frontcourt (3, 4, 5)--we either go with what we have or Lou Amundson gets cut and we bring in an upgrade at whatever position. Can't be afraid... He acts like he put this roster together and it must stay together at all costs. I mean come on---at what cost, Phil? Losing games?? If another GM inherited this roster tomorrow, a good 3-4 guys would be cut right on the spot in favor of better talent. I mean Early could be let go if need be. Why not? Better players have been waived...Why keep the dead weight around?
