It's one thing to do it because you simply have a small team. But to go out of your way to make yourself small would seem to be a mistake. I don't really see that teams are doing that per se. IMO the Stretch 4 or 5 is a much sought after type of player and especially if they can defend. I like that Phil LOVES size and looks to build teams with good size. He's also aware that you want bigs that can MOVE. That's the best of both worlds having size that is quick and mobile so you can defend any style of team.
One of the things I mentioned about the reason Phil liked the Triangle is that it allowed him to play big. He runs an offense that is designed to work with multiple post players and is easy to defend out of the offense. So he has his teams ready for playoff style ball cuz that's how they play all year. The Knicks will not have any issues with the slower pace of the playoffs. They already run an offense that works even if you can't get a lot of fast breaks.
