I saw Lee was placed on the trading block. Got me thinking about his career. He's a 2-time all-star (once on each coast), a 1-time all-nba selection, and an nba champion. First and foremost, that's a hell of a career in itself. He has accomplished a lot. He was part of the foundation which eventually turned into this championship group in GS, but with Green developing and Lee getting injured, it was a combination which eliminated him from the rotation. I assumed as soon as he changed teams, he would rebound and end up putting up big numbers again. After all, the season before the injury he averaged 18 and 9 on a good, but not yet great GS team, so it's not like he has seen a steady decline in production. But since the injury, he has just dropped. He is 32 years old, but as a skilled big man, i assumed he may decline gracefully. He is one of my favorite players of all time. He has his weaknesses, particularly on the defensive end, but he has always been very fun to watch, likeable, and a lone bright spot in a horrible Knicks era. My question; in his decline more attributed to age, lack of recovery from injury, poor fit on GS/celtics with their loaded front courts, or just the league changing gears and demanding a PF with more of a combination of defense and floor stretching ability? Or some combination of these factors?

Love this guy and was glad for his success in GS. He had a big role in the playoffs which had to be gradifying. Celts just have too many youthier bodies in front of him.
To me he was a dave Debussure type player that could rebound as well. But Dave Debussure could play great defense!!!!

I'd say he would be a good fit here in a minor role if we shedded some of our bulk.
I don't think the game has passed him by.

Was happy to see Lee traded. Some players are lousy defensively for a variety of reasons, with Lee I always thought his lack of D was a conscious choice to pad his rebounding stats. I remember the way he used to drop back just before a player went up for the shot to go for the rebound. Thats not about poor reflexes. Lee was doing that before he got hurt. Also didnt like the laughing it up on the sidelines with Nate. Defense so bad that even D'Antoni had to bench him in the 4th quarter.

To Lee's credit, his defense did improve somewhat in GS. Best thing Lee did as a pro was take his benching without any drama, and stepped up when he was called upon in the Finals. Was instrumental in winning one of those games.

Its hard to argue with Lee's strategy, it got him mega contract and a ring. Watching Lee play, it felt early on like Lee was using the Knicks as only a stepping stone. Never could get past that part.

Celtics have a lot of young, talented players, but Lee was a near-20/10 guy just 2 seasons ago. So why is he not playing a major role? What has made him no longer capable of those numbers?

He's just old - never all that athletic which was why he could never defend the PF all that well.

Look at the talent at the 4 throughout the league - it's insane. DLee is just overwhelmed by the size and athleticism most nights.

Anthony Davis
Draymond Green
Blake Griffin
LaMarcus Aldridge
DeMarcus Cousins
Chris Bosh
Ibaka
Dirk
Towns
Porzingis / Melo
ZBO
Kevin Love
Tobais Harris
Taj Gibson/Gasol
Nerlens Noel
Thad Young
Derrick Favors
Paul Millsap

that's 18 out of 30 teams that have really really great talent at the 4. The teams that don't have stars at the 4 have really big or athletic guys

it's a crazy position in the league. You really can't get away with starting DLee anymore.

He truly was a bright spot on a crappy team - but his defense was atrocious and mostly non-existent. I would file him in the same folder as Amare. Good skills/injury issues/no D.

How many humans in the history of sports had the ability to put up 20 points 12 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 55% for a full NBA season? Only a few. Not a great NBA defender but great at everything else.

David lee is the perfect example of how it is possible to be a super efficient player and compile lots of good stats yet your defense is so weak that you are still so far from a very good player.

Calderon = Lee

so here is what phil is thinking ....

Empty points on losing teams. He sure did put up some numbers though, and got real rich! Also every opposing player would salivate when going against him. Basically an automatic bucket.

Exactly right. His skill level was unbelievable for a 6'9 guy, still is. And he improved every year we had him. He has accomplished in the league what only a small % of players ever have. If he was a good defender, he would have been a superstar. So can't really knock him for only having one major weakness. Plus he was a class-act.

Of course I'm saying this with 20/20 hindsight...

...but you can make a pretty strong case that the Knicks would have been better off staying with Lee and not signing Amare.

Yeah, Amare was a "star" and Lee only a home grown talent, but, taking everything into account, Lee turned out to be the better player of the two if you compare them from the point in time of the trade, and especially after the Amare injury...and he would have been a better complimentary player with Anthony than Amare ever was, IMO.

I always had issues with Lee as a defender, but Amare was just as bad- maybe worse in some ways, was never the rebounder or passer that Lee was, and didn't have Lee's BB IQ. He also improved on his game every year he was with the Knicks...just wish he had made himself into a better defender.

Lee had a pretty good run in the NBA, and his "fall" was preceded by membership on a title team. Not a bad career for a late 1st rnd. pick.

I think you are right. I think Walsh had to make a splash and that was why Amare was signed. It made a splash but the Phoenix doctors were advising against STAT getting a deal that long because they said his knee wouldn't hold up. Walsh was a gentleman and had character but many of his moves hurt the franchise at the time and for the future. The Knicks reputation was so bad after Isiah they needed something but Walsh chose the wrong coach and then tried to make moves to make the wrong choice work. I listen to mike and mike on the way to work and I still remember greenberg going to the bit repeatedly, 'hello Isiah' whenever a team was looking to move a bad contract.

Injuries, declining athleticism, and the complete inability to play defense.

I love how we seem to have a zero tolerance approach to our current players, whereby they're not even allowed to struggle for more than 5 games, yet when it comes to ex-Knicks they are allowed to suck for years and we still want them back.

Doesn't mean anything when you allow the opposing players to score at will because you can't/won't defend. You seem to find lack of defense irrelevant when evaluating talent these past few years- I find it baffling

I always thought that the quick Amare signing was also aimed at enticing Lebron. Bit of a desperate move because there was nothing else on the roster. In this sense I understood it. Knicks needed to make themselves attractive to LBJ, so signing Amare immediately was to offer him as a running partner for Lebron. Obviously for the money it was not the smartest signing, but we were between a rock and a hard place, trying desperately to bring in LBJ to save the franchise.
I too was baffled at the Dantoni signing, thought it was terrible.

Lee was our center and if he got into foul trouble, which undersized players do, he could not put up the numbers.

Yes, for the money, we should have kept him. Amare was awesome but he was an odd fit with Melo. Lee's numbers might have fallen but that's ok.
For what its worth, winning wise, the Melo trade did nothing for either the Nuggs or the knicks.
both teams had one nice 50+ game win season mirage.

That was then, this is now. Rebuilding from ground on up. It would be a good Idea to monetize Melo's value on the court instead of the box office.
THis is not a "Hate Melo" rant, its just a reality.

A bunch of us here were actually saying that at the time. Amar'e was the better player at the time... but only for the 2010-11 season. After that, you can make the case Lee was the far better player and value. Que sera.

I was actually bummed when they blew up the Crawford / ZBO / DLee core 9 games into D'Antoni's coaching career here, and 150 games before Lebron was due to be a free agent.
