Per Bill Simmons in his podcast with Knicks fan Michael Rapaport. Simmons talks about the trade specifically starting at 5:25 but there's a good 15-20 minutes on Porzingis and the Knicks (spoiler alert: Simmons thinks KP is a franchise player)

haha well i gave the link! the brief synposis is the Knicks, Celtics, Hawks and Hornets had a trade where Knicks would move from 4 to 9, Boston would move up to 4, and Charlotte pulled out of the deal. Simmons guesses that the Knicks would have taken Kaminsky at 9.

if true, THANK YOU MJ!

Nice.

I definitely remember hearing that Kaminsky rumor on draft night and before it. I can never tell how much Insider info Simmons has or if he just treats the same rumors we all hear as gospel. I think it could be either with him...

yea, who knows. he seems to be pretty plugged in to the NBA and especially to the Celtics, so since they are involved i believe it a tad more than I would otherwise.

Boston was offering four total picks to move up in the draft, so I assume they were offering the Knicks a handful of picks to move back. If ATL was involved in the trade, i wonder if the Grant for Hardaway deal was part of it as well, and when the deal fell apart we went ahead and did that on our own.

Well Briggs was right... Frank is putting up 20+ points and 8 boards. Only problem is it took 7 games to do that

Goes to show how its often better to be lucky than good. Ideally you are both

This is why you never ever trade down. I would not have been disappointed with any of the guys who fell to us at #4. I would have only been disappointed if we made a serious reach, or traded down so we didn't have to reach. You never trade down if you are a bad team. Bad teams need to give themselves the best possible chance of acquiring a future star, and trading down decreases those chances. Not worth the extra role player or future draft pick, or whatever extra compensation you can acquire. You want to add as much top-tier talent as you can. The exception being if you are already a good team with foundation players, and most teams drafting in the high lottery are not that, unless they acquired the pick in a previous trade. I liked Kaminsky, but only if we somehow managed to get him in addition to our 4th pick.

Mudiay has the upside. The issue with him was always fit. Can Fisher get the most out of a player like him running the triangle. But fisher seems to be adapting so i'm sure Mudiay would have been fine in the long run. Obviously KP is a better fit though, and his upside is probably higher too, although i think both will be very good players, possibly stars.

There would have been a Ton of picks given to the Knicks though. Like the rights to the Nets pick this yr which will probably be in the high lottery as well as other possible Nets lotto picks.

Happy with KP though.
