NEW YORK -- New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony says his surgically-repaired left knee is fully healthy heading into training camp.

"I'm back. I'm there, I'm back. I feel like myself again," Anthony said on Sunday at his youth basketball camp at Baruch College in Manhattan. "Mentally, physically I feel great. So I'm just ready to go."

Anthony had surgery to repair a patella injury in his left knee in late February. He has no medical restriction on his knee heading into training camp, which begins Tuesday at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

"I feel like I'm ready to go. I feel like I felt before I even had the injury," he said. "Physically I feel great, mentally I feel great. I'm just ready to get out there and get this thing going. I've been waiting for this since February."

Anthony reiterated on Sunday that he's "excited" about the Knicks' offseason additions while acknowledging that the team didn't land the stars it coveted.

"I liked the moves that we made," he said. "Was it the stars that we wanted to go after and go get? No. But the pieces that we got, I'm really intrigued at what we did and where we can go with this team."

The Knicks finished last season with a franchise-low 17 wins. Anthony played in a career-low 40 games before undergoing surgery shortly after the All Star Game.

New York didn't land any top-tier free agents in the offseason, signing Robin Lopez, Arron Afflalo, Derrick Williams, Kevin Seraphin and Kyle O'Quinn, among others.

Team president Phil Jackson also added 7-1 big man Kristaps Porzingis and point guard Jerian Grant via the NBA Draft.

Anthony, 31, spent time working out one-on-one with Porzingis over the summer and more recently scrimmaging has been scrimmages with his teammates at the Knicks practice facility.

"I've been with them since August just off and on -- working out, little mini camps here and there," he said. "Playing at my gym in Terminal 23. So I'm excited about kind of what's going on and what's gonna happen. ... For guys first starting to come together over the past month, month and a half, it feels like we've been together for a long time. And that's a great feeling."

Anthony said it's been a "long" offseason for him. He was bothered by reports, including one from ESPN.com, that he wasn't happy with the team's decision to draft Porzingis. Other reports stated that he wasn't happy with the direction of the team.

He has since denied both theories.

Now, the 13-year veteran is looking forward to getting back on the court.

"I'm just glad I can be in the position I'm in right now and just be back," he said. "... I've been looking forward to this moment for a long time. Just can't wait to get it going."

Yeah but if he would have had the surgery sooner he could have played in SL.

I wish I could see those scrimmages the Knicks have been having. It's good to hear Melo say that they already have good chemistry and he feels like they've been together for a while. I don't recall him saying something like that before. Also reading in other reports that they've been actually working on Triangle offense is good as well.

Real clever.

Great to hear he's medically/physically ready...but this kind of article might have come out 2+ months ago...

Except for this part.

From Stephan A. rants about Melo upset at Phil and ruining his vacation, to Melo reportedly thru his headband in disgust over the draft to "the brotherhood of man part IV", its hard to really know what is real.
most Max guys talk a good talk which is nothing to complain about, but in the end its W-L that speaks loudest.

Glad Melo is "feeling well" and no talk about him needing time on back to backs or other stuff in the Amare Era. For now its been a clean summer with no Bargnani Pneumonia or calf problems, and Calderon Ibiza vacation rumors floating around either. Melo and La La seem to be keeping their business to themselves and Phil is going to Guru himself to the team more at Fishers bequest.

All good stuff. What ever happens, happens! Fun to read Phil's stuff and the transparency that fans like.

Could care less how Bargs and Amar'e play this season. Don't care about Shump or JR either. The direction of this franchise has changed. This is a nearly new roster with a LOT of younger players. This team isn't a finished product but it's a much better roster in terms of fit for the system and in terms of balance. We get to watch our 2 1st round picks play and develop. It's a new day and a new season. Hope springs eternal.

I really want to see how this team defends this year. I'm hoping for a major improvement in that area. I like the bigger and tougher team we have this year inside. More length and rim protection and with Afflalo, Jerian and Gallo we should be much better defensively overall. We can play Jose in the 20's in terms of minutes this year. There's no need to have him up at 30 mpg anymore.

good for you, melo! make sure you are slimmed down, in supreme shape so you can have fun playing small forward in the offense, playing the weak side and making a lot of cuts off the ball.
knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

Thats great news. Also good news is Melo saying that he is going to be a big brother to Porzingis, try to help take some of the expectations and the pressure of playing in NY off of him.

I hope they can get a two man game going, that could be very dangerous.

We are talking about being fully cleared with no restrictions...that just happened.

I was responding to what I though was a rather poorly thought out comment about when Anthony got his surgery. I was alluding to the fact that he could have been completely cleared a while ago if he had taken care of business when he should have. He would have been able to go full speed at the US BB mini-camp held in early August, which he was not able to do.

This is reality, too.

Quiet as it's kept Melo is GREAT at playing a 2 man game with a big man.

But the truly amazing thing about Anthony’s excellent play is that he’s doing so well without really exploiting his elite ability as a pick-and-roll scorer. Less than a tenth of Anthony’s 339 field goal attempts have come as the ballhandler in a pick-and-roll, but he’s scoring a phenomenal 1.09 points per possession on those plays (per Synergy). For reference, only a few players in the whole league are more effective scorers in pick-and-rolls.

It’s not hard to see why. Anthony isn’t the explosive athlete LeBron James is, but he does have a similar combination of size, quickness and wicked dribbling skills. On high screen-and-rolls in particular, which almost always involve Tyson Chandler as the screener, Anthony is an absolute nightmare.

Last season, Carmelo Anthony got 10.6 percent of his shots as the pick-and-roll ball handler and it was one of his most effective weapons (he shot 47.9 percent and scored an impressive 1.07 points per possession). Still that was less shot attempts than he got through isolation (27.1 percent), post ups (20.8 percent) and even as a spot-up shooter (14.6 percent).

That 10.6 percent was up slightly from the 7.9 percent the year before, and if you go back it was more than the 7.7 percent of chances he got on the P&R his last season in Denver. (All stats via Synergy Sports).

But Anthony wants more.

That’s what he told Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork.com.

“I want to continue doing that and figuring that part out, but that comes along with the territory and the game situation,” he said. “It’s all about just trying to tighten up those screws that you already have, and just having fun with it.”

He should get more chances because maybe with it he will drive and attack more — Anthony is far more efficient when he attacks compared to when he settles and pulls up for a jumper.

I don't know how much he'd really be able to do that with KP in this offense. The PnR is not really a major staple, however, what is a big part of the offense is Give n Go style looks which are not too different from the PnR. Also you have an action like the Forward who flashes into the middle off a down screen while the ball is in the hands of Melo in the Pinch Post, so he could hit KP on that look quite often. This offense is flexible enough for these players to find ways to work off each other.
