Analysis
At the 11th hour before the 2013-14 season, the Hawks' front office decided to exercise their third-year player option on Jenkins. They may want a do-over. It's hard to imagine a more disastrous sophomore campaign. Jenkins is a one-dimensional shooter who missed 14 of his 18 3-point attempts last season and sat out the majority of the season with a nerve issue that eventually required back surgery.

Jenkins better hope that the nerve issues were to blame because his NBA career is on life support at this point. Mike Budenholzer publically took Jenkins' defensive apathy to task, which isn't a surprise after the 23-year-old registered exactly one steal in 158 minutes on the court. Jenkins now holds the NBA record for lowest career steal rate among players with at least 1,000 minutes to their name (0.6 percent). Even if we limit the sample to two-year players, Jenkins is still the most steal-averse player on record. In the eternal struggle to find out who stole the cookies from the cookie jar, you can safely strike Jenkins' name off the list.

Jenkins enters the 2014-15 season with an enormous opportunity to redeem himself. He'll have competition with John Salmons and Bazemore, but the Hawks could use a scoring guard off the bench after they traded Lou Williams to Toronto. However, Jenkins' stint at summer league wasn't encouraging. He scored just two points on five shots in 29 minutes on the floor. Miraculously, he did pick up a steal. This, sadly, counts as progress"

Unless he has made progress, he is not athletic enough to stay in front of other guards. He can stroke it so probably why he is still in the league but can't stick on a team. He's not a PG and undersized for a SG. Another tweener who can't play D. Probably a good final piece to a good team who needs a 3pt specialist.

It would. We already have 5 guards for next season, if we sign Jenkins then the likelyness of Shved coming back is unlikely.

It seems to be quiet on the Shved front. Only Berman has mentioned him recently. I searched him on twitter and saw that he recently got married. No other news that I am aware of.

If they don't resign Shved (or at least make an offer), you have to assume that was the plan the moment they traded for him. He played as well as you could have hoped in his audition with us last season.

John Jenkins came into the 2015 season trying to prove that he was finally recovered from a back injury that robbed him of virtually the entire 2014 season. His short stint in summer league last summer raised even more doubts, but he told reporters at the team's media day that he was completely healthy and in the best shape of his life.

Jenkins showed that during the preseason averaging 9.2 points while shooting 65 percent from the floor. He even showed off a quick first step an improved ability to finish off the dribble at the basket. However, the Hawks declined the third-year option on Jenkins and as the regular season began, it was apparent that he was way down the depth chart in terms of playing time.

However, when Jenkins played he did perform reasonably well whether that was in garbage time with the Hawks or in the D-League. He averaged 18 points in 11 games in the D-League while shooting 48 percent from the field and 42 percent from three-point range. Jenkins knocked down 40 percent of his three-point attempts with the Hawks while appearing in 24 games this season.

Of course offense has never been the question mark for Jenkins. It is the defensive end of the floor that has often had him out of the rotation. Jenkins' improved conditioning actually improved his stature as a defender. He will never be classified as a good defender, but it doesn't appear to be due to a lack of effort on his part.

Jenkins' time with the Hawks can be best summed up as bad luck. He showed some promise in his rookie season, but the back injury couldn't have come at a worst time. With the team transitioning from Larry Drew to Mike Budenholzer, Jenkins never got the opportunity to show that he belonged. By the time Jenkins recovered, Atlanta had made an effort to get bigger at the wing position and he found himself just trying to hold on to a roster spot.

Jenkins' tenure as a Hawk is likely over, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't get a shot with another NBA team. His shooting ability alone is worthy of a chance and there is a good possibility he will find himself in training camp with another NBA club.
