I just need to understand what the knicks are trying to do. They got Melo for 5 yrs and he needs help. Yet this kid won't be ready to help soon. Sounds like they're building for the future..fine. but then why are they signing a 35 yr old David west??Sounds like phil knew they needed to tear everything down and rebuild. Cool that makes sense but yet they invested in an aging franchise player who makes a lot of money.
I'm more confused than disappointed. At #4 you needed to get a young player who could contribute now. Not a gamble pick. I'd be more ok with this pick if we didn't invest in Melo (with the obvious pressure to win now). You tell me were rebuilding with a youth movement then I'm all in
I don't like this in between feeling
No disagreement about the real issue- to tear down or not to tear down.
I've been critical about the signing of Anthony at the amount we gave him, even though he might be a "bargain" in a few years as the cap increases.
A funny things is that Phil talked about Anthony giving the Knicks "wiggle" room in the contract, and though Anthony did not really give it too him, Phil still signed him.
Was it Jackson's call, or was he pressured from above?
In his press conference a week or so ago, Phil made a comment about not drafting a guy more interested in shoe contracts and branding, and I think this was a shot at Anthony, and maybe even an indication that he had no intention of taking Anthony's guy- Winslow, who a few days later talked about NYC being a perfect place for marketing his brand.
Really comes down to what you think the term "best player available" means. If you add the "contribute now" tag, aren't you screwing with the very meaning of BPA?
Porzingis is a more experienced player than Mudiay or Winslow, hands down, and has played in more sophisticated offensive schemes. One played 12 games in a highlight reel league, and the other is one of the youngest players in the draft with some flaws in his offensive game that many teams must have seen or he would not have gone at 10. Kristap and Hezonja are the only top players in the draft to have played in a grown man's league- he might be physically behind Winslow and Mudiay, but who is to say that the size of his body and the size of his heart don't accelerate his NBA career.
Getting Grant- a more mature version of Mudiay with less upside- gives you an NBA ready rookie, and gets rid of THJ, who clearly did not fit into Jackson's offensive concept.
I'm biased, since I was one of Porzingis' biggest and most open supporters, but we had a good draft, yesterday.
EnySpree: Can we agree to agree not to mention Phil Jackson and triangle for the rest of our lives?
