UCLA's Kevon Looney could fit with Knicks
By Ian Begley

Kevon Looney grew up rooting for Phil Jackson’s Los Angeles Lakers. So it was a bit surreal last week when he got the chance to talk basketball with Jackson at the New York Knicks training facility.

“He still has that aura,” Looney, a draft-eligible big man from UCLA, said by phone on Saturday. “He’s a legend in basketball so it’s kind of nerve-wracking sitting next to him and talking about the triangle.”

Looney, Kentucky’s Trey Lyles, Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky and Georgetown’s Joshua Smith worked out for Jackson and the Knicks on Thursday.

Derek Fisher, Allan Houston, Kurt Rambis and other members of the Knicks’ coaching staff were all on hand.

Looney has worked out for more than 10 NBA teams but said his workout with New York was the most detailed.

The workout started with a 20-30 minute film session with Jackson and Fisher. The Knicks’ coach and team president showed the assembled big men a few basic actions in the triangle offense. From there, the players took the floor to run through some sets and play 2-on-2, among other activities.

“The competition was pretty good,” Looney said.

Looney and the other three big men who worked out on Saturday are all projected to be drafted outside of the top 4 picks. The Knicks have the fourth selection, but Jackson has said that they are exploring all of their options, including the possibility of trading the pick.

The workout Thursday was further evidence that they are at least considering their options when it comes to trading for a lower pick in the first round.

In his latest mock draft, ESPN’s Chad Ford projected that Looney will be selected 19th.

The Knicks, according to sources, have scouted Looney for much of his college season at UCLA.

One Eastern Conference scout believes the 6-9 forward would be a strong fit in the team’s triangle offense.

“He could be an [Lamar] Odom-type,” the scout said. “He can shoot it and score from the interior, pass and make plays off of the dribble. I like him there.”

Two separate scouts said recently that feel as if Looney is one of the most underrated players in the draft.

“We could be having a different conversation about Kevon Looney in five years,” one said.

Looney had strong rebounding numbers in college (he had 15 double-doubles) and made 41 percent of his 3-point attempts. Those statistics -- and his 7-4 wingspan -- are reasons why NBA executives view him as a first-round talent.

But Looney feels that his versatility extends beyond what he showed at UCLA. In high school, Looney handled the ball frequently.

“I was more in the pick-and-pop and a rebounder in college,” Looney said. “I’d like the chance to show that I can make plays off the dribble.”

Looney sees his versatility as a fit in the Knicks’ triangle offense.

“I can pass it, I can stretch the floor, I can dribble it,” he said. “I tried to show that in the workout. I think I did a pretty good job at that. Everybody in the workout was pretty versatile and those are the kind of players they want in the system.”

Looney said he has two more workouts. After that, he’ll be waiting to see what happens on Thursday night.

“To have a chance to play with [NBA players] is an unbelievable feeling,” Looney said. “But I’ll feel much better after my name is called.”

Pistons have interest in Hardaway Jr.: If you're looking for any clues regarding potential draft-night trades, here's one: the Detroit Pistons are said to have interest in trading for Tim Hardaway Jr. and have tried to engage the Knicks on a deal, per league sources.

Detroit may be looking to move guard Brandon Jennings because the organization traded for fellow guard Reggie Jackson last season. Jackson will be a restricted free agent this summer.

Jennings is entering the final year of his contract and will make $8.3 million next season. In a Jennings-for-Hardaway Jr. swap, the Knicks would likely have to use their trade exception and adjust their outgoing assets to make the deal work.

It's unknown if the Knicks would want to take Jennings' salary out without further enticement. It's also worth noting that former NBA star Tim Hardaway Sr., Hardaway Jr.'s father, is an assistant coach with the Pistons.

i have to admit, i really do like looney. i think he underwhelmed a little bit in his only year at ucla last year, but even in doing so, he did show quite an all-around repertoire in his game. he definitely beasted on the offensive glass and was able to hit the mid-range jumper with easte but he for a big man he didn't exactly show any sort of post game, which i guess is fine if we're drafting him since we want him on the perimeter anyways. if we trade down, i think he makes an excellent candidate for us.

i love looney. i think hes a sleeper. but i hate hate hate BJennings. lol. i wouldnt do this deal
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

If Detroit and Hardaway Sr really want his son, then I do our #4 and Hardaway for Reggie Jackson and their #8. That's assuming D'Angel Russell is off the board. If Russell is available at #4, then I just keep the pick.

I don't think the Pistons are trading Reggie Jackson. They want to build around him - also he'll be RFA July 1, so I don't think they CAN trade him at least until 90 days after he re-signs. I don't even know if you can do a sign and trade with an RFA anymore.

I would look into trading Timmy to the Pistons, but I don't think Brandon Jennings is the answer.

I don't really want Jennings. If we take Jennings then we have to give then Calderon because I don't see how having both plus Galloway works for us. So we would need a lot more sweetener and what would Detroit give us? That's why I don't think this happens.

Looney would be a good grab if he was a part of a collection of players. Like #4 to Boston for 16, 28, 33 and there 2016 first rounder lotto protected. Then trade Jr to Detroit in a 3 team with maybe Dallas. Detroit gets Jr and Dallas 2nd #52, Dallas gets Jennings, Knicks get Detroits 2nd rder #34, and Dallas first rder #21.

I'd like a 3 way deal with the Pistons and Mavericks.

Mavericks get Brandon Jennings.

Knicks get Raymond Felton (to be waived via stretch provision), a $4 million trade exception (which effectively adds to our cap space) and Spencer Dinwiddie. That effectively takes our projected cap space from $27 million to $34 million.

Pistons get Jose Calderon, Tim Hardaway Jr, Cleanthony Early and $3 million cash incentives (via NY).

THis seems a bit lopsided toward Knicks. But if we could swing such a trade, would certainly cast a favorable light on Jax the GM.

Not overly impressed with Looney the few times I saw him. Saw both him and Johnson in a game and was not floored by either.

Turned 19 during the season, he could have used another year and really improved his draft-spot, I would think.

Impressed by the 3pt shooting, though he didn't take a lot of them. Crazy wingspan, too- surprised that his shot blocking is not better, and you read that he has no game in the post.

Has some big shoulders- looks like he can carry the added muscle pretty well.

Late teens in this draft, IMO. Would easily

Some of these guys should go to Europe for a year, instead of college. Even if they play fewer minutes they can make some $$ and learn some things. Not sure how much time colleges have for player development of the one and done kids.

It does see like every guy we have in for a workout gets a "Knicks Interested In" article.

Heard that the Lakers have had over 70 guys come in for workouts, some more than once.

Must be darn hard to the LA writers to churn out their "Lakers interested in" articles.

the thing with looney is that ucla did some weird things with him... they played zone on defense and he was regularly at the top of that zone for some reason... he usually played away from the basket on offense also...

his stats are not impressive but there's some things to like and his measurements are impressive... he's def worth a gamble to see if he was just misused in college.. which happens.. andre drummond is one that comes to mind...

i'm not too high on him but he has a much better shot at contributing in the nba than trey lyles...

Strange... sounds like the kind of stuff done with Turner, folks have said he was really misused at Texas- might even have been you...not sure.

Wonder what kind of commitments are made regarding this type of thing when they are recruited by a coach?

Have to figure that player development is pretty minimal, but then again they probably know ahead of time that the kid will probably only stay for a year.

How dare you suggest us trading for R.Felton even if we'd be waving him?? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Even a straight up Jennings and 38th pick for Jose and Thjr would be great because of the salary it would save next summer.

...I wouldn't keep him. The intent would be to waive him to save $5 million via the outgoing-incoming salary differential and the deferment of money created by the stretch provision. That $5 million is worth a capable role player on the open market.

The Pistons are not expecting their lottery pick to become a starter next season but they will keep the pick unless they get a superstar talent, Keith Langlois of Pistons.com reports. Coach and president of basketball operations Stan Van Gundy told the team’s beat reporters on Monday that with ample cap space — approximately $20MM even after the Ersan Ilyasova deal — that he’ll fill the starting small forward vacancy through free agency or a trade, Langlois continues. Tayshaun Prince, the starting small forward during the second half of last season, is an unrestricted free agent.

Van Gundy virtually shut the door on reports that the Pistons were shopping the No. 8 overall pick, including one on Monday about a possible deal with the Knicks for guard Tim Hardaway Jr., Langlois adds. “The one thing we are firm on is – minus a superstar being available – we won’t trade out of the draft,” Van Gundy said. “For your salary structure and everything else, it’s too important. It’s probably unlikely that we trade back, but it’s not impossible.”

Supposedly Van Gundy says there's been no talk. Who knows?
