After capturing Sixth Man of the Year honors during the 2014-15 NBA season, unrestricted free-agent shooting guard Lou Williams is eyeing a raise on the open market. True generators of instant offense are hard to come by in the NBA, so it's no surprise Lou Williams is drawing interest from an array of squads in advance of free agency starting July 1. According to RealGM's Shams Charania, "Williams is expected to receive strong interest from teams that include the Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, providing a clear competition for the Toronto Raptors to retain the NBA’s reigning Sixth Man of the Year." Charania also notes that Williams "could scan league-wide possibilities of a three-year deal in the range of $27 million or four years for $35 million." Such a deal would represent an upgrade from the $5.4 million Williams earned in the final year of his deal with the Toronto Raptors, according to Basketball Insiders. Going off of those projected figures, Williams could make upwards of $9 million annually under the parameters of a deal with one of those big-market franchises. After the Raptors were swept by the Washington Wizards in the first round of the playoffs, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported that "as long as the Raps can re-sign Williams at a palatable number of his own, it's believed they want him back, as well, no matter how badly they need frontcourt upgrades." With a shade over $49 million in guarantees on the books for next season, according to Basketball Insiders, the Raptors could afford to bring Williams back—particularly because Kyle Lowry and Patrick Patterson are the only players guaranteed to be under contract when the cap spikes in the summer of 2016. "[Staying in Toronto] would be ideal for me," Williams said in April, according to TSN's Josh Lewenberg. "Just the culture that they're building here, just the identity that this team and this town has, I really want to be a part of it. I look forward to it. I don't want to say hopefully we get something done, I'm really positive that we will get something done." A season removed from averaging a career-high 15.5 points and shooting 34 percent from three en route to capturing a nice piece of hardware, expect Williams to entertain myriad offers as clubs jockey for his unique services. |
