People are making too much of this idea the Knicks will trade the pick. I haven't read a compelling deal that would provide more value than keeping the pick and adding free agents to form the new core. It's better cap wise as well.
I wouldn't try to discourage anyone from exhausting their concerns about it though. The history of this company shows it remains a possibility. Until the Knicks use that pick in the draft people will have justifiable concerns this org could do something wacko and trade it. History seeps into the brain and sends signals to the fingers to type about it.
I'd like to see a compelling deal that would justify passing up a chance at a player who could be a franchise piece for years. So far I haven't seen a deal worth doing. We have to remember that they would be drafting and presenting that player to the fanbase with all kinds of fan fair. This would be such a rare event of goodwill that I can't imagine selling off the future like that.
That player buys the franchise all kinds of time to build an eventual champion as opposed to being on a short leash with an injured Melo who may not even be ready to start the year.
All I'm saying it is not an unreasonable fear, because looking for reasonable trades and not seeing one doesn't mean they couldn't do something stupid. Even an eternal optimist such as yourself knows most people don't trust the franchise even if they like Phil and think he has a plan. Dolan has proven there will never be such a thing as full autonomy while he's the owner. Even if Phil wants to use the pick, starphucher logic always lurks in the bowels of MSG waiting to undermine common sense.
