He is young (25), can play and is available.

"Green has been linked to the Pistons as a potential destination in free agency, but the fact that he’s restricted can complicate that process for other teams somewhat significantly.

With free agency in the NBA often times being a frenzy, teams are reluctant to sign players to an offer sheet, because it ties up their cap space for three days as the team with the player’s rights contemplates whether or not to match.

It’s smart for the Warriors to put it out there that they will in fact match any offer Green receives (whether it’s true or it isn’t) because it makes it less appealing for another team to sign him, and more difficult for Green to obtain an offer above what Golden State may be willing to give. We saw this play out with both Eric Bledsoe and Greg Monroe last summer; it ended up working out for Bledsoe, but Monroe was forced to sign a one-year qualifying offer after being unable to secure one in the range he desired.

The Warriors may very well offer Green a full five-year max deal, because once the salary cap spikes the following summer, max contracts will similarly increase — and Green’s deal may, at that point, seem like a bargain by comparison.

But either way, letting it be known that they’ll match a max-level offer sheet is how the game is played."

As Splat (personal feelings aside) has astutely pointed out the criteria for Knicks acquisitions, among those is a player who must be able to compliment Melo. Green plays defense. Carmelo plays defense when he feels like it. At 32 years old, Melo will feel like it less.

Think like complimentary skill sets on both ends of the court, not just offense.

He is young and available. But he, like any rising star, will NOT come to New York City at a discount.

You don't super max out role players. A mid max is okay especially considering the cap boom. said this once and I'll say it again the only way the Knicks or any team has a chance at getting high level RFAs away from their current team is to offer a similar contract as Chandler Parsons was offered by Dallas.

A 3yr deal w/trade kicker, 2nd yr opt out, and 1st refusal on trades. I would offer that contract to 2 of Leonard, Middleton, Butler, and Green. A short deal gets these players huge money now and also a quicker path to mega money later. I think this deal would work really well on Middleton if he wants more brand appeal.

1. Golden State
2. Every other team with enough cap space (NY has the highest state income tax of the teams with cap space)

I believe GS matches anything as well but I would give it a shot. Hit up Butler at the same time. Do so you resind the bird rights of a bunch of guys, but the cool thing in the CBA is if you do that to make an offer to an RFA and that player's team matches you can get the bird rights back for those players. Makes a ton of sense with a guy like Shved. WE want to keep him, but if I can get Butler and Green in here sorry Alexey its been nice knowing you. If that fails its only a couple days now I can lock Shved up.

I'm not sold on giving young guys huge deals off play in their contract years...16 mil per is a lot of coin for an unproven player..Way too risky for me...I can't see paying 3rd or 4th option player 16 mil per...Larry Sanders comes to mind..

I agree with Holfresh. On the Knicks we would be asking a lot more of Green then GS is. Weve seen this all to many times. Instead we should be looking to develop our own Green (Thanasis, Early, Brazil dude) And get production while they are on bargain deals ala Green on GS this yr.

Main Free agent target has to be Butler regardless if we draft Ok4, Towns, Russell.

Khris Middleton might be able to be had for a solid deal and has a lot of potential.

Why tie up money on RFAs their teams have said will match any offer. Meanwhile more obtainable free agents will be signing with other teams while we're waiting on Chicago and GS to stop dicking around.

No.

Thanks.

Larry Sander had many more negatives than Green. Sanders wasn't efficient, couldn't pass, and was really an average rebounder for his position. The one positive was that he was a shot blocker but his overall defense sucked. He was similar to a poor man's version of Sam Dalembert.

Green is a worse scoring version of Paul Millsap. His passing at his age kind of make up for his inefficiency but this year he has been doing well. He might be a third option on offense but he is a 1st line defender.

He's not simply a "role player". Secondly, he's "maxed" but it's the Max the first time around aka $13-$14 million. That's chump change when the cap spikes. $13-$14 mil for a multifaceted forward who can guard 5 positions at a DPOY level who's offensive game is blossoming every year. We need to sign guys BEFORE they blow up (like Harden in HOU).

It's not so simple as you're making it out to be.

All moot cause GS would be nuts to not match _any_ offer.

Another thing is that he is Melo's size doing similar things to Melo, light..Do I want to tie up so much money at the tween SF/PF slot?
