Calipari said he only played hard for 3 minutes and then coasted his last 25 in the last game. He only sprinted the first 3 minutes and then jogged and coasted. He only scored 4 points in the last 25 he played.

This is why you've seen him drop a bit in the draft---what anyone can notice watching Kentucky. he can have his moments but they are simply not sustained. He might have all of the skill in the world--but if you are not giving 110% at 19 years old---then you'd better wake up. In a few posts I said I wanted to see 2-3 dominant 20-10-4 games from him. The only way to do that is sustained effort--if he cant do that for 15 games how does he do it for 38 minutes a night for 100 games?

I hate to say this but this draft at the top somewhat scks. The one time we sck--the draft at the top blows.

Yeah this isn't a good sign. Kid might be thinking at the pros already. That's why I say trading down might be a good option for us if we don't get the #1 pick.

Obviously towns cant do that however that doesnt mean his stock or the draft is weak. The 2014 draft was suppose to be the deepest in years and that hasnt exactly been the case

Yet Calipari who has 2 starting 5 units

Played him 25 min of coasting, he sounds stupid criticizing him

To this degree, how about not playing him 25min of coast time

This didn't need it's own thread either

Could have placed it in the Karl-Towns thread that has his name in it

its a big deal for calipari to say this because he knows what it does to the kids draft stock. watching several kentucky games this year, towns has looked uninterested in playing the game. i would not spend a top pick on this guy.

Calipari knows what most do... he's not ready between the ears. He's too used to destroying HS kids and coasting. He's probably pushing for him to stay. If he does and has a breakout sophmore season he would prob be #1 next year

yea but that can change. Right now Russel, Looney, Austin and OK4 all project to being good pros but none are in that elite zone. That can change. Its easy to see how projecting what kind of men these 19 year olds will be is not an exact science.

Agreed. Towns gives me the most trepidation out of these top 3 guys, esp. after hearing this from Calipari. Let's see if it lights a fire under this kid. If he doesn't respond, I'd consider that a red flag...Okafor's the given, then this kid Mudiay is really growing on me. A skilled 6'5" athletic PG is nothing to sneeze at. Differnent positions I understand but Mudiay looks like a hell of a lot more advanced prospect compared to Towns. And we do need a PG...

Incidentally, what's the deal with Mudiay's ankle injury? Anyone know the severity? Did he wind up making it back? Thought I read he may have been cut by Guangdong to make room for Will Bynum? Is that true?

How? I feel like he played sparingly in China and hasnt been in any action for awhile. The problem with him is there is very little to go on

Unfortunately, the few video clips are all we have to go on. And then yeah, he went down with the ankle injury. I get the reluctance from some to really consider him but to me he looks promising enough, even with the limited amount of material to go on. A little bit of a leap of faith on my part, I understand, but I like what I've seen and read. I see an advanced looking PG prospect for an 18 year old that should only get better and better. The one major criticism is his jump-shooting but I think that he can clean that up in a hurry. His mechanics look clean/smooth enough. I dunno--everything else from his size/athleticism, to his ball-handling/passing, to his ability to score the ball--it all looks advanced to me for a guy so young. I think there's a lot of promise here. I lot of it has to do with fit and if we don't get the #1 pick too -- what do we do at 2 or 3, etc..

Its not nearly as bad at 2 years ago. And Towns doesn't come across as a low-character player. It sounds like Calipari is just trying to light a fire. I wouldn't put too much stock into it.

no no thats all fair... was just wondering. I think it comes down to workouts. Get the kid in a gym with some other prospects. I would expect him to establish himself there. It gets scary when you start seeing the cat and mouse play with agents who dont want his stock getting hurt by workouts against guys projected to go later.

His vids show a lot of Westbrook... maybe not a true PG but a nice mix of power and quickness. If we picked 2 and took this guy I would be pretty pumped if the FO thought so highly of him

tell him privately.

things like that can affect the kid forever and will kill him in the draft.

you dont do that to your own kid.

maybe he has... many times. How do you know? Calipari's big thing is that he grooms NBA players right? I mean Towns gets limited minutes as it is.. he uses them to coast? Im inclined to give Calipari the benefit of the doubt here. He strikes me a class a douche but I think he called this one straight.

if you go and play at kentucky, you're signing up for a different set of circumstances. every single one of these kids that commits to go there, know what they are signing up for. if they can reap the benefits of bigtime expoosure like calipari gives them, then they can certainly handle the adversity.
