And I think that there is a good chance that we get him.

Don't think Portland will pay him since they have so many to pay.

Mathews is a real 2 way player, he is smart and very efficient.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

I was watching him put on a show to close the game against Orlando.

Portland can afford to pay him though if my understanding of the cap/cba is correct. They can theoretically get down to $56m without picking up Kaman or trading Leonard. All they have to do is revoke the rights to fringe players like Freeland, Claver, Wright, and Robinson. This means they can use $10 or more to fill out there back ups and then sign all their FAs. The problem becomes the luxury tax and future flexibility. Batum is a FA soon and Lillard will be looking for a max extension like Wall and Irving got. Lillards will be more since the Cap is going up of course. So will they go all in and keep Matthews or do they let him go and slide Crabbe into his space. Another option they may want to consider is trading Batum, who is having a poor shooting year but is passing like crazy and rebounding/playing d well.

If they decide to keep Matthews, max out Aldridge, and pay Lopez they would have one of the highest pay rolls in the nba if not the highest. Will Portland be willing to pay Nets type of Tax money?

This is like the supersized 5x better version of Galloway and Larkin. Really there is no comparison but I think people know what I mean.

Another thing, Say Matthews and Beverley does happen for around $16M-18M would you give max money to Draymond Green? Is he worth it? His efficiency has been on the decline but he is a young player.

I think Wesley Mathews and Beverly in the back court with melo, Draymond and okafor up front is fantastic. Phil just said he wasn't going to spend just to spend and this group looks like something Isiah would have put together and overpaid to do so....but the mix of defense and offense looks really good here and it's very possible wecan end up looking like this.

Here's how I'm looking at upgrading at the 2 spot:

(1) Use the rest of the year to evaluate THJ--one way or another we gotta get this kid playing better. I'd personally like to get his value back up to the point where I might be able to flip him to a team for a different need. I recommended on another thread THJ to Dallas for Dwight Powell. Something like that. I'd be OK with that. I have a ton of question marks about THJ, right from the draft. None of them have really been answered. He's OK, nothing special. Cuban isn't stupid though--neither he nor anyone else for that matter is trading for this dude playing like he's been playing. He's gotta start playing better. I know the losing sucks and the atmosphere around the team is bleak but that shouldn't be stopping this guy from going out there and putting together a few good games in a row, even in defeat. How bleak is the overall picture really btw -- is it really that bad? We're gonna get a top pick and have a ton of cap space to make improvements -- does Timmy wanna be a part of the turnaround next year or not??). Seriously starting to doubt whether he has it in him. He's just looks like a real limited player out there--he's done nothing to change my mind since college. Real talent rises to the top, even through the bad times. Haven't seen it yet out of this kid. Show me something dammit!!! Heck, maybe I'd even change my mind and think about keeping him here.

(2) Elliot Williams and Kevin Murphy are two cost-effective replacements I've got my eye on. There are quite a few guys out there I like but I've narrowed my 2G search down to these 2 guys. Will probably have room for one or the other as I also want a spot for Thanasis Antetokounmpo and his defense come next year...Williams was just called up to the Jazz and didn't play well his first game (@ HOU). I still believe in his talent. Flat out better talent than THJ. And Murphy could be a big-time scorer in the NBA, either in a starting role or as real potent firepower coming off the bench. Dude's 6'7" 200 lbs. with 5-star offensive skills. His game really reminds me of JR Smith -- I think there's a good chance this guy could be JR Smith without all the nonsense -- better shot selection, more consistent, more mature. 20 ppg scorer/+40% 3-pt shooter his last year in college and he ripped up the DL last year. Just signed a deal to play in China. I think Utah cutting this guy may have been premature. They should've stuck it out with him a little longer... I always liked JR's potential to put up big numbers in a hurry. He just could never do it consistently and then there was all the nonsense that came with him..I see similar ability out of this kid without the BS.

Elliot Williams
Kevin Murphy
Thanasis Antetokounmpo

Size, athleticism, youth, skill, outside shooting, an added bonus with Williams' passing skills, deluxe scoring prowess with Murphy and a potential shutdown defender in Thanasis. That mix has everything we need, real nice contrast between all 3, and I think we could put that together for under $3mm. Probably closer to $2mm, maybe less.

I like Wes Matthews, I just feel we need to spend the money elsewhere, either on a PG or on multiple big men.

Draymond is a great sixth man type on most teams. He fits with Melo because he passes and spreads the court. But pairing him with Melo FT would leave us vulnerable inside. I wouldn't go Green until the center situation is cleared up.

I would not worry about him defensively too much. In the east the only guys he would probably have problems with is Gasol and Nene. I have seen him compete and defend guys like that though plus you never know which Nene will show up and Gasol would be a year older. Too me defensively he is basically a slightly smaller Paul Millsap. Their measurables are freakishly close and just like Millsap he gets rebounds, steals, and blocks. Millsap does weigh more though.

I am not sold on Green but he is growing on me and because of the Warriors silly moves he could be had. If he regains his efficiency then I would imagine he is the type of player Phil would go after.

I agree- just what we've been missing- substance over style, consistent, two way. I think Portland will match, but our hope is if maybe he wants a bit more exposure and a new challenge playing in NY. He might be happy where he is though- we'll find out soon enough.
