Melo: I want a 'bulletproof legacy'

New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony doesn't want his legacy to be defined solely by wins and losses -- he wants to be known as more than a basketball player when it's all said and done.

"What I really want is a bulletproof legacy," Anthony told ESPN The Magazine. "How can I be known for being a visionary, for being truly great?"

The Magazine has a fascinating look at Anthony's business pursuits, his long-term goals and the legacy he'd like to leave.

He told the Magazine he doesn't like being defined by the success or failure of his team.

"People say every year is the one that will determine if I'm great or terrible, if I've met expectations or been a disappointment," Anthony says in the story. "To be honest with you, I'm tired of it."

I've got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!

Melo is a very successful guy no doubt about that. But he dresses like a used car dealer.

SPLAT, give it up bro. Every star in this league is out to make the best for himself on and off the court. Name 1 guy other than Dirk or Duncan (who's better years are behind them) that are taking less money or not concerned with themselves? Enough with these threads already for the love of God. You win. Melo is the anti-Christ. I'm so mad he droppes 5ft of snow on Buffalo and now Friday's Rangers game is cancelled. What a jerk!

I don't live in Buffalo. Just saying that every player in the league is basically like that these days. Is it annoying, absolutely. In a way I respect that he is at least open about that. Prefer that to players LeBron or Durant pulling wool over people's eyes all the time. Other players like Howard and Paul have made similar mores. Even Amare has tried similar stuff, but his lack of ability and injuries have basically made him a mute point. Is Melo really diff than any other star even though he gets ripped all the time for doing the same things they're doing?

Other threads discussed stars who take cuts to build teams or stay together. The norm? No. Most will take the dough. Does that make an old-fashioned guy, thinking Melo should take less? No, it means I know this will end badly and today's report took me out of my distaste for him mode and rekindled my active dislike of him. What a fuktard to say those things while the team is spiraling. So while he may be like most money-grubbers, no, I don't respect him for revealing what a POS he is, because it demoralizes his teammates. It is anti-leadership at its best. He's a bastard.

Melo should realize the only way anyone will give a **** about his "legacy" in the first place is if he wins a championship. In the article he distanced himself from team performance which is the worst thing for him to do IMO. Team players think about their own success in terms of contribution to the team's success, not independently of it.

Are any of the great players in the league really great leaders these days? LeBron heads for the hills at the first sign of adversity, but has a PR Team put a nice spin on it for him. Howard is a child abuser and genuine A-hole complaining about teammates and pretty much anything else he can find. If you wanna channel your anger at the Franchise towards Melo, that is fine you can certainly do it, but it isn't really fair to say he is doing something largely different from any other star in the league on a personal level. Pretty sure Rose took the cake for selfishness anyway with the ridiculous graduation comments, so this could at best be second.

Come on man, let's not miss the point. Read Dagger's response above. That is exactly the point. He just shat on the team, his teammates. He distanced himself. He truly doesn't take to heart the losses or at the very least he has numbed himself out to them, neither of which is what you want to hear from your core player. Saying players are not leaders is one thing. We already know he is not a leader. But to **** on everything you just signed up for and to then wave that money in everyone's face and say what really matters is how he is going to leverage that capital in the future is just disgusting. I reiterate: Melo is a bastard.

Amar'e did the same his first yr here

When all the chatter started with us trading for Melo

He sold the young core of players out quicker

Than seeing caned air evaporate

D-Rose recently did similar and basically said

He doesn't give a fudge what anyone thinks

Kobe and Lebron likewise

And I'm so happy I never liked any of them and never will

Greatness is not something one can buy or talk people into.
This is something that must be earned.
So Melo is out of luck. He has no idea how to get the thing.

Where are the posts telling us how these comments by Melo are really wonderful?

Seems the Melo Fan Club has fallen silent.

Never been a huge Melo fan in a purely basketball sense. Fairly one dimensional scorer etc etc. That being said once he was on the Knicks I mostly fretted on how they could build a team around him now that he was the focal point of the offense.

Anyway, I really can't get into the whole Melo hate as I really could care less if he's a self centered idiotic douchebag/windbag in real life who eats junk food all the time. As long as he isn't raping anyone or killing people I could care less to ever even read an interview with the guy. I've never ever been interested in athletes inner thoughts or reading their biographies or Forbes articles about their laundromat startups or lionize these guys as anything more than lucky MFers who play children's games for millions of bucks. Seriously I never get the hero worship around athletes, my love of sport ends on the field. Anyway melo sounds like a lot of these alpha male athletes who think they are Demi gods and impregnate groupies all across the U.S., say dumb chit, and who are all about the money. I'm really only concerned with some semblance of a team being built around him. I'm not blind to the difficulties in doing so but where I disagree with the Melo haters is that he can't be part of a winning ball club. It's possible, IMO. He just needs a couple guys either with more dominant talent or with forceful personalities (Think Sheed and Kidd and Kurt 2 years back).

Now we can go on all night about melo making dumb comments and whether Phil is an idiot or simply a dumb GM but I just hope that when the cap skyrockets to $90+ million and Bargs and the rest of the cap fodder fall off the cap and we get a nice lottery pick next year that it might actually be possible to build a decent knicks squad. Love him or hate him the only scenarios where the Knicks are good in the next 5 years all involve Melo. The past is the past ie:
It doesn't exist. There is only the future.

Of course the Knicks may very well continue to suck etc etc etc. I just hope that's not the case because what else can I do. I just don't have the heart to root for another NBA team as sadistic as it is being a knicks fan.

Did you read the article? It said the interview happened around the 14th of October when the Knicks went to Syracuse. The team wasn't spiraling then. Maybe do a little more research before you attack a guy.

none of these players are knickerbockers. the day they become knickerbockers is the day they will garner the full wrath or praise of the fanbase based on their words and deeds.

you talk about fair-- i think that's fair.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%
