![]() http://www.msg.com/shows/spike-lee-what-is-the-triangle-offense/triangle-offense-tutorial.html EDITOR'S NOTE: ARE THERE NO "SET" POSITIONS WITHIN THIS FORMATION? That is partially true. The offense calls for two post players and three perimeter players. While that is similar to most starting lineups, no one is pigeonholed in one particular spot. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT THAN OTHER OFFENSES? As opposed to most offenses that run set plays and put the pressure on defenses, the triangle philosophy is different. In the triangle offense, a team creates constant ball movement to see how the opposing defense reacts and then operates based off the defensive formation. There are counters for just about everything the defense could show. Spacing is probably the most important principle of the triangle. There should always be three players that form a triangle. Players should be about 15-20 feet away from each other. Proper spacing makes it hard for the defense to defend the whole court, which in turn should create easy looks when the defense tries to help or trap. Spacing is also beneficial for when the shot clock is running down, giving the player with the ball plenty of space to create for themselves/teammates. Yes it can, but the main goal of the pick-and-roll in the triangle is to create mismatches and draw double-teams. WHAT TYPES OF TRAITS ARE IDEAL FOR PLAYERS IN THE TRIANGLE? Players that are versatile, have a high basketball IQ, unselfish and can score in isolation should all theoretically thrive in this offense. HOW DID IT ORIGINATE? The key ideas of the system were created by Sam Barry, then the coach at the University of Southern California, in the first half of the 20th century. One of Barry's players, Tex Winter, went on to further develop the concept at Kansas State University before bringing it to the NBA in the 70's as the coach of the Houston Rockets. When Phil Jackson became coach of the Bulls in 1989, Winter was an assistant coach and helped Jackson implement it. HOW SUCCESSFUL HAS IT BEEN? Phil Jackson has won 11 championships running the triangle, with Knicks head coach Derek Fisher point-guarding five of those championship teams. The Golden State Warriors, under new coach Steve Kerr, who played for Phil Jackson with the Bulls, are expected to run parts of the triangle offense. For more about the triangle offense, we recommend reading this breakdown of specific triangle sets or watching this in-depth video. But mainly, Spike Lee will have it all covered Friday, Oct 24 at 10:30 PM on MSG Network. GALLERY: FAMOUS FACES OF THE TRIANGLE OFFENSE |

Won't know for sure until the season starts, but I still believe that Bargs having some much needed structure on both ends of the floor will cut down on the all too frequent moments when he doesn't know what to do. Its only practice but it looks like Bargs is starting to get the gist of what Fisher/Phil want. |

![]() If you look at Wear he is quite nimble for 6-10/6-11. He might be a kid where he didnt get all or enough PT in college to draft(also his age is 24) but has the assets to be a good NBA role player. He can run the floor play D shoot from 3 inside out maybe go a little 3-4

![]() Now we can see just what many of us have been saying about the difference between GREAT coaching and mediocre coaching. I think there is a coherence to the instruction and attention to detail that makes all the difference. It's more than just saying this is what we want to do on D. It's also about the footwork, energy, aggression, use of your hands, trust in teammates and keeping your awareness. They're being taught to work as a unit. We must remember that this is the type of camp that Phil Jackson has run all these years for his teams. So to all the naysayers and doubters this is what you get with Phil being here. Not this idea that he's just here to collect a check!!!
On offense you can see this is a system that keeps EVERYONE involved and active at all times. No more of this slow it down and stand and watch offense that makes it easy for the defense. I can't be happier to finally see this kind of BB. I've been hoping to see this kind of ball for decades. It's such a beautiful style of BB to watch. Also gotta love the type of role players that Phil is targeting. These guys look familiar because he's had these type of guys in the past and now he's adding these kinds of under the radar role players who actually help make the teams function at a higher level. It's gonna be interesting to see how that all works going forward. |

![]() Just looking at how our roster is currently made up
I think Phil Jackson is looking to build a Triangle system closer to the one of The Chicago Bulls With CA being CA, not looking for him to be Jordan or Pippen, however, he will expand his game and play within a system We have a solid rotation of BIGS, with a possible mini clone to Rodman/Faried in the development of Acey Though, he lacks the quickness to play SG on defense on most nights, even SF on many nights, if you watch the drills he does It seems like JR Smith is going to have a break out year as well, with him bringing back to skills he learned as a 6th man of the year with Kidd on the floor In my opinion, it also seems like STAT and Iman are currently the black sheep of the team It also seems like both Wear and Sanchez being great fits and cheap solid options in our near future, either this year if we clear roster spots Just some comparisions or roles I see playing out from a combined Lakers/Bulls Triangle team Calderon = Ron Harper/Brian Shaw/Fisher type of role Acey = Rodman AB = Horry/ Poor mans Gasol if he can improve his all round game/initiate on the post/ and facilitating/passing game while using his length/quickness like Pau did Cole Aldrich = a cheap Pau Gasol, maybe closer to Brian Williams/Wennington/Luc Longley Jason Smith = Horace Grant Giannis Antetokounmpo aka Tenacious = Jud Buechler Tim Hardway JR = Kerr/Kukoc type of role, obviously without the size of them, maybe Shannon Brown's former role Early is still developing but I don't see him being a Pippen, I do see him being a Leon Pouwe/Shane Battier type of role though, though I don't know if he will ever be able to play PF and maybe even play some G/F role if he can work on his handle/quickness/speed/abiilty to create his own shot and for others I really like what I have seen from the team and how detailed Fisher is, explaining the philosophies from the bottom up, reworking some of the fundamentals before going in to deeper Triangle sets Although I like Larkin and think other players such as STAT, Iman, Dalembert, being contributers this season, they are not guarantee's as part of Phil Jackson's future with the roster I also believe that Phil Jackson will target Durant in a trade with the trade exemption gained by sending STAT to Philly, though he has to save enough assets to trade for Durant and need Durant to want to come to NYK by pushing a deal like Kevin Love did just a quick possible roster for our roster of the future Calderon We could deal the draft rights for our 2015 pick, along with 2018 1st rounder, 2018 and after 2nd rounders, and any other asset's we may acquire in the future Cole Aldrich *will be resigned, as he is earning the vet min this year, and we will have his early bird rights, a move that would put us over the top to get the MLE, as he also has a low cap hold* Larkin *could go with or without him* Tenacious *could be starter if he works hard, he has quite a high ceiling and tremendous energy* These 3, could be potentially requested by OKC with 2 1st rounders, 2 2nd rounders, and a 20m trade exemption Jason Smith resigned to a 2 year vet min deal *with player option for 2nd year, which would give us his early bird rights by next season, as he takes less money to play in a system that fits his skillset and potentially grow with the team, similar to what OKC did with Nick Collison, paying him more first, then less as he got older, which is a solid role player AB resigned to a cap friendly deal, like 2-3m per year, on a 2year deal OUTLAW, STAT, Dalembert will all have to impress Fisher/Phil Jackson, depending on other moves, though at the vet min, especially STAT if he is traded, allowing him to rejoin The Knick's as he started it all in 2010 when no one else wanted to come, giving him a chance to win a ring on the bench but I see Outlaw contributing this year on a contract year as well, his length could be usefull to use against Lebron/Paul George/Wiggons/ DeRozan/ Rudy Gay, possibly even other positions like James Johnson was used last year on multiple players with his length/athleticism, especially if they see him as a fit with Tenacious/Acey Off Season moves next summer Front Office Brian Shaw added to our coaching staff, if he is mutually let go by Denver who would have experience as head coach and lead assistant, with a high paying job Robert Horry/ Rasheed Wallace *who had a great impact on CA and is one of the players that has tremendous respect still with players, with his ability to stretch the floor, post up, defend, rebound/blcok shots, score, understood how to play with and without the ball, fundamentals on footwork/fakes/position etc Scotty Pippen/Kukoc/Battier, helping the development of our DEFENSE and SACRIFICING for the better of the team, with the ability to spread the floor/shoot in Kukoc Kapono *as a shooting coach* Billups/Ron Harper in the development of the point guard as a shooter, using their size/strength on DEF Trainers that will work on the in game shape and ability to read the opponents defense, analyze in the game, in addition to strength/condition without giving up speed/quickness
With the cap predicted to be about 68m, 5m raise each year, possibly even more with The TV DEAL's, a reason why Lebron chose a 2 year deal instead of more, because The NBA will draw even greater network deals
sign Tenacious to a 3/4 year team option deal for 3rd year, with a starting salary of about 1m versus under 500k, with either cap space or part of the MLE or LLE players 2-4m range, especially if JR Smith leaves to another team offering more money which is a possiblity.... Wesley Matthews, not sure if we would pay Gereld Green that same money Randy Foye, has a team option, if he is let go, I can see Foye being a great fit as a player to stretch the floor in the 2-3m range other possible players being Gereld Green, Danny Green, Draymond Green, and KJ McDaniels who signed a 1 year deal with the Sixers this off seasons gambling instead of 2 year guaranteed deal with 4 year team options With role players willing to take less for the rest Amir Johnson/Boozer Travis Wear/Sanchez signed to a 2 year vet min deal with partial guarantees, as they develop with Tencious in The D League Knicks With Andrew Bynum being a possiblity on an unguaranteed deal with his familiarity in the Triangle and ability to score in the paint In 2017 sign Kobe to tag along to generate revenue/fans/help guide CA/Durant in the Triangle, with a vet min offer, as money should not be a motive anymore, and creating the buzz with Kobe vs Lebron's possibly career rings, to add to his legacy, a 2 year vet min player option deal, maybe part of the MLE, and would no be surprsied if we still used it on Pau Gasol who has a player option for the 3rd year, reuniting him with Kobe/NY/Phil Jackson/Fisher, possibliy Bynum, to go along CA/Durant/Calderon, especially if we get his brother Marc |

![]() One of the things I come away with is we will have tremendous quality length up front. We have quality depth all over the roster and a big time player. I can easily see us with reasonable health get back somewhat close to the level of 2years ago

Phil is doing a good job of filling out the roster with meaningful role players. They have to go out and prove it but I like the makeup of the players he's been choosing. With the proper preparation and the new system I think this team can really be a legit playoff team in the East. |
