Chemistry Key for Undefeated Summer Knicks

LAS VEGAS -- As the Knicks await the tournament stage of Summer League, they find themselves in a much different position than they were a year ago; a more talented roster, combined with a collective focus instilled by a new coaching staff, has propelled this group to a 3-0 start. In the process, they’ve provided hope for the upcoming season with their enthusiasm and inspired team play.

These (mostly) young Knicks are in the early stages of learning the Triangle offense, but for the most part, they are making it look easy. And when it stalls, they go back to basics: communicate more, cut harder, and make a play for a teammate.

Perhaps they’re running a simplified version of what is known as one of the most complex systems in basketball, but the team has bought in and the results are promising; they’ve won their three games by an average of 12.3 points – two blowouts and a gritty, two-point victory over Portland in which they rallied back to win on a Shane Larkin runner.

“You keep on grinding it out,” says Tim Hardaway Jr., who has been one of the Knicks’ most vocal leaders while pouring in 20.7 points per game. “Keep on communicating, keep on being passionate and things will work out.”

His players credit coach Derek Fisher and his staff for emphasizing trust and teamwork and thanks to the high-character makeup of the roster, New York has thrived in an atmosphere usually dominated by isolation play and communication breakdowns.

“We’re working together as a team, that’s the main thing,” said eight-year veteran and Triangle expert Shannon Brown, after New York demolished Charlotte by 23 points on Monday. “The coaches are doing a great job of explaining the triangle and what we’re trying to accomplish out there and we’re making it happen. We’re just out there having fun playing basketball and learning in the process.”

Both the fun and the learning are evident when you watch this team play. In less than two weeks, Fisher – who elected to coach the squad because he was anxious to “get after it” – and his staff have them embracing the nuances of a new system, making effort plays and constantly encouraging each other on the court and from the sidelines.

“It’s contagious,” says Brown.

On a team full of great teammates, no one embodies this spirit more than Thanasis “Tenacious” Antetokounmpo, the exuberant rookie who knows his limitations but won’t let them slow him down: “I’m a good defensive player. I play hard every time, 100 percent effort. And the offense, I make everybody else comfortable.”

It’s no accident that this group has been such a joy to watch play together. There’s no shortage of talent, but Larkin’s teammates echo his contention that the combination of team-first players and strong leadership have made this a unique situation.

“That’s something that’s emphasized throughout the coaching staff,” he says. “If you’re not playing, you’re just as important as the guy on the court making the plays. That’s the kind of guys we brought in, but also the emphasis the coaching staff put on that side of the game.”

This approach has carried the Knicks through their first three games and allowed them to stay together when things inevitably get bogged down. Against the Blazers, they struggled with spacing in the first half, but because they communicated and kept fighting, they were in position to win at the end.

Although these wins won’t count toward the Knicks’ playoff push this coming season, important work is being done to build a culture that will; no fewer than five Summer Knicks figure to play significant roles in New York’s rotation, so Fisher’s players are gaining valuable experience.

“The first thing he always says is trust your teammates and play for each other,” says Jeremy Tyler, who has looked very comfortable as a facilitator out of the pinch post while averaging 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest.

The next test comes on Thursday as New York opens tournament play against the winner of Denver and the D-League select team at 10:30pm EST.

Its been fun having a team of young prospects with good potential who are playing the right way. A lot more fun than seeing a team with Chris Smith as the starting PG, etc.

Been waiting for so many years to hear those words come from the Knicks.

Im getting goose bumps, because i know how important communication is in everything we do in life, and I know how important it is when your teammates got your back. I study championship teams, what their made of, how they operate, what they do..

These types of quotes really reflect well on Fisher above all else. Didn't take long for these young player to buy into whatever he was selling.

you heard all the ravings about what kind of man and leader he is. You heard from him how excited he was to lead. Now your hearding from his own players and what a breath of fresh air. I have never really been excited about a coach, but Im really rooting hard for Fisher. I think we got really lucky to get Phil and Fisher in here. Having Dolan hiding under the desk is pure magic

So all it took was 60 million for Dolan to figure out he should be doing with the Knicks what he does with the Rangers? I wonder if Phil pointed that out to him...

he probably did exactly that knowing Phil. Want win? Let the BB people do their jobs.

Any reason to think that Dolan was not lurking in the shadows while Phil and Anthony's agent negotiated the "team friendly" contract he extorted took received from the Knicks?

Great stuff! Can't wait for the season to begin. I love that management is looking for high character, team first guys. It will reflect on the team's make-up and the basketball we'll play, eventually giving us something special.

So you're going to be one of those posters, 101 ways to get to what you posted in every other thread??? You might think you are taking a swap at everyone but Phil, but you really calling him a spineless buffoon for being manipulated.

About summer league.....I remember when those Nate/Lee/Frye teams would go undefeated....I can't put any stock in this league. Go to see with the real players.

Yeah but did you see Fisher and some of his coaches went to the d league select team game last night to scout?

I think Dolan really is leaving it to Phil and his team. The moves Phil is making all follow a reasonable logic that relates to Phil's philosophy on BB. It's nothing like what we saw being done in the past. Dolan's decision making was all over the moves of the past. Now we're making smart decisions and even tho Phil is hampered by the poor decisions of the past, he is doing the best he can. In time Phil will completely rid this franchise of the stench of Dolan's interference. It starts with the Kids on this team.

Yeah, and after that they are going to the And1 Annual A1sauces Allstar game confirmed by Chris

Only added it because there were two comments about Dolan staying out of the way... could not help myself.

Sorry for being "one of those posters." Will try to be better...promise.

Quite happy with the kind of ball we are seeing, though. SL- yes- but these guys have seemingly picked up the system, and I've actually enjoyed the way they play.

Have seen a couple of other SL games, and you get the typical "I got to prove myself by scoring" type performances. This SL team seems to actually be learning the system in a short time. Quite amazing.

I truly hope that you're right. I thought Phil was going to stand up a little more after his prior words.

Don't think he will interfere anymore (that's if he did have a hand in the Melo contract), but it seems we gave up a lot in the bargaining.
Remember, Dolan pushed Walsh to sign Anthony the first time- and probably overpaid. Letting him go to Chicago would have looked bad for the franchise- too much loss of face to a long time rival.

I'm quite happy with the way the team is shaping out- expect some other deals to happen before the season starts.

The big story will be how Anthony accepts a less significant role. Remember, you're playing the wrong way if you hold the ball for more than 2 seconds in the Triangle, and our offense was the 7 seconds or more iso-offense last year.

Anthony plays like the way we've seen the SL kids play- many of whom will never play a minute in an NBA game, and I'll be quite happy.

This is why it's been so important that we have seen the Kids take to the System and team philosophy as they have. THJ, Early, Tyler, Cole, Larkin and maybe even Thanasis and Brown might make the team. That's a significant part of the roster already buying into the new culture. It's gonna have an impact on the rest of the team. Fish is sure to have at the least these young guys already playing and practicing the way he wants them to.

i worry we won't see this kind of play during the regular season.

i remember we had one summer league like this with MDA, and the regular season was a stinker, if I recall.

i'd have been happy watching this group go at it regular season.

Now, if the vets do buy in to this style of play, i could see us easialy making the play offs.

We got Yoda (Phil) and Luke (Fisher) bringing the force of the Triangle to the Knicks. Unless Darth Dolan interferes things should be OK.

Well for one thing we won't have any trouble ot of our PG's. Calderon, Pablo and Larkin will do the right thing. THJ, Brown and Shump will most certainly follow the plays as instructed. Bargs, Smith, Dalembert, Tyler and Cole will definitely buy in. Early will buy in. Really the only question Marks are JR, STAT and Melo. They're the ones that would have change how they play the most. So Fish only has to convince 3 guys to buy in. That's easy to control with minutes. If they buy in they play longer. If not they sit. Even Melo can be taken out of a game, tho it's less likely to happen. In the Triangle the star player always gets to have a bit more leeway to do their own thing. It's expected to a certain degree. So IMO I think we'll see this team buy in as a whole and make the change to this style of play. This is why i'm expecting this team to challenge for the Atlantic and win it this year.
