Carmelo Anthony just might be the most powerful figure inside Madison Square Garden — with the exception of MSG chairman James Dolan, of course.

The Daily News has learned that Anthony’s new contract with the Knicks includes a no-trade clause that allows the All-Star forward to control his future with the club. Anthony has officially agreed to a five-year, $124 million pact, which is $5 million less than the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement.

Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and Dirk Nowitzki are the only other NBA players with no trade clauses. Anthony negotiated a no-trade into his contract after structuring his deal to give Knicks president Phil Jackson salary-cap flexibility next summer.

ESPN reported that Anthony’s deal also includes an opt-out clause after the fourth year. Anthony exercised the early termination clause in his previous contract with the Knicks and became a free agent on July 1. Anthony’s deal includes just a slight increase in the second year, which is crucial with the contracts of Amar’e Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani set to expire next July.

I expect this to inspire some riviting discussion

I'm not happy with Dolan and Phil bidding against themselves but I don't hold this against Melo.

You expect it? Now your initiating it!!!

There are 3-4 antiMooby's out there. Must you rile them up? Does you bringing the fight to the thread make you smarter? Or perhaps ignoring it deliberately? Melo got it and likely he wants to make sure he is not signed and next winter exiled to Minny for KLove.

LOL, people are pist because they thought phil valued melo the same as them. Phil was going to low ball him, tell melo you ain't running the knicks and exert his will on him in a "it's my way or the highway" fashion.

And this has to be a big'ol **** in your soup if you see this.

I mean where does it stop??? Does Phil actually inform Melo about upcoming decisions??? Does he really deal with Melo on level ground, let him know about trades, players they want to sign and such......he might even ask for a little of melos input. *shutter at the thought*

I personally am just happy Phil got his man to run the triangle and build the franchise with.

are the half dozen threads that are 12 pages too long not compelling reading?

I'm happy to have Melo back, but I would have felt better if we lost him to some other team (& he ran out of options) if we had simply drawn a line with the ETO & no trade clause. I mean, Melo can have a no trade clause, but then the ETO is team, not player. You want player ETO, then no 'no trade'.

Simple. And if he and his team didn't like it, I would have suggested playing elsewhere, and moved on.

I'd be entertained watching our summer league roster lose but compete 100% of the time, land a top pick and have a $h!t ton of cap room moving forward.

If you must, do a google of "Moses and golden calf and find a graphic" then caption it......

Knicks resign Carmelo Anthony and fans rejoice!!!

Or

Phil Jax seen here offering Melo not 5 contract offers but in fact TEN via simple tablet!

Perhaps take a different twist where Moses is not depicted as PhilJax, but as a Melo hater:

Knick hater TDK seen visually upset with Melos new contract. Again.

Is it bidding against themselves or simply following league expectations? Honest question, because Melo taking the deal most wouldve wanted or represents his value in their minds would go completely against the league tendencies with star players, Super-friend Team aside.

Thats a nice thought, and I totally agree with your thinking behind it, but its not reality. I heard a nice piece with Avery Johnson on ESPN radio during the pre-signing Melo drama. Don Lagrecca asked coach if at some point you say enough is enough and offer ultimatum like you suggest above or you just wait it out, and he said you wait it out. He said point blank its a talent league and even the best GMs with the best team cultures know this and cater to that talent.

I would have loved to sign and trade him to Cle to go play with his buddy and get Wiggins and Bennet back or something similar, but as you realized that usually only happens when options become exhausted and the Knicks dont have the talent on their roster to play those games and risk losing a guy that gives you 25/8 a night when they are trying to build something.

I doubt the most die-hard mooby lovers would pretend Melo is on the Kobe/MJ level but he is an elite scorer in the triangle on a Phil Jackson run team and thats an OK piece to have in the fold.

When the Knicks won 54 games was it non-stop mooby worship? I dont remember that. I remember people being happy he was playing well, but just as happy to see guys like Copeland emerge and mostly just winning. Winning is the best. As this team gets better all things Melo will go to the backseat and if you dont love his game you will just see him as piece and latch on to other guys on the roster you identify with. Just my 2c

^^^That's because Kidd and Chandler were the real MVP's of that 54 win team....I have the spreadsheet to prove it.

but thats point... when people would say those things you shrug your shoulders, laugh a little inside and turn on the TV to watch your Knicks win another game. Who cares at that point? If thats what makes the team watchable for those guys fine. To each is own.

Like he needed a no trade cause with that contract! If we stink it up next season and fail in the 2015 offseason, he'll demand a trade anyways- this is a non issue.

Thats ok if we have other real MVP's on a team with Melo and we win 50 plus games!!!
Then might we dare to ask: "Did Melo make others better that year"?
Uh oh! Here it comes..................

google Mooby, its from the movie "Dogma" and pertains to the golden calf satire used as a corporate mascot. It was clever.
Nalod hated "coming home" and the worship that Melo received. While I am no Melo hater, I really was turned off by the hero worship he recieved. At the same time he is not deserving of the hate by detractors.
Melo is not the Knicks but often depicted as "Melo don't advance", not "Knicks don't advance".
I trust phil's intentions to build not "around" melo but "With" melo. Thats my view, nothing more.

All these things were covered in another thread, what was the purpose of creating this one?

Aren't some posters here tired of the vitriol slung in Melo's direction

Why stoke those fires with this.

I translate this as open sesame to vent at anytime and anyplace on him, unless mods beg to differ with Original Poster intent and how it should be received
